Best tenderloin around! I will be taking a detour when I'm on I-80 to get to Hamlin and have one! Homemade pie selection is amazing as well!

Tenderloin is excellent, medium thick, great breading. -5 cheese chips(curds-frozen) and onion rings(frozen), both as expected. -3 Kid meal for under $5 split mini corn dogs and popcorn chicken(crispy) with smiley fries and tator tots. Comes with small cone/dish of ice cream. -5 Banana cream pie and sour cream and raisin pie both excellent - obviously homemade crust, decent sized for $3.40. -5 Service good but not excellent. Had to ask for refills, were food at removing empties. Pay at counter though not told to us or on the menu. -4 Definitely be back for the tenderloin and pie, reasonable prices, and see what else is homemade as mentioned on their site. Fish and chicken sandwich not homemade per server which is a disappointment. read more

Stopped here after a mid race in Gray, Iowa for a tenderloin since it was on the 2021 tenderloin trail 2.0. Place was fairly busy when we got there. Couldn't help but noticed all the stares we got as not being drom this small town. Food was good and prices were cheap. Wait staff was friendly. read more

Small mom and pop style diner in a metal building. Staff was friendly and food was good. Locals have never seen an out of towner apparently. Looked at us like we had fallen in the pig pen. Ignore them and enjoy the small town feel of this place. Don't forget to save room for the homemade pie. Delicious! read more

My wife and I met my brother, his wife, and my 1st cousin here. We had heard about their award winning tenderloins, as well as their great pies. We all loved our food. The tenderloins were tender, breaded and cooked nicely, and tasted great. Some of the side dishes we had were corn chowder, ham & bean soup, onion rings, and a salad. We had chocolate pie, lemon meringue, raisin cream, and banana cream. Prices were very reasonable, the place was clean (including the bathrooms), and the service was very friendly. We traveled from the Omaha area, my brother and his wife from Des Moines, and our cousin from Oakland, IA. Hamlin was somewhere in the middle for all of us. We plan on retuning and trying other items on their menu. We drove and hour and a half, and are willing to do it again. read more

Oh my, what delicious chops you have! This is the local home cooking I've been looking for in Iowa. Everything is very simple but done very well. The tenderloins i had just fell off the bone, the cream corn was like nothing I've ever tasted before and the mashed potatoes are basic Idaho potatoes which are mashed with gravy on top.....simple and delicious. I also had the rhubarb pie ala mode. I have never had rhubarb before and this little place just did them perfectly tart and sweet! And with $1 dollar beers, how can you go wrong! This isn't your fine dinning nor your shi-shi food, this is your local down to earth local eatery that everyone strives to find for an authentic, middle of the corn field, Iowa experience. Oh, yeah- as good as it gets, fo' shizzle! Drove out of my way, for this one, on a cross country trip from LA to NYC- way out of the way, since the 71 north of I-80E was closed, but it was worth every drop of petrol. The BPT (Breaded Pork Tenderloin) was superb: a crunchy crust with the softest, most flavorful porcine interior I've ever tasted. Worried about other posters comments that the service is lousy? Deal with it, my friends- this is a family business in a tiny town, and it's impossible to predict what the turnout will be on a daily basis, especially since they're a Roadfood Pick. Or, better yet, if you're too impatient STAY AWAY! there are enough people who understand the caprices of independent businesses to keep this lovely place going, and they don't need your ten bucks. Took a cruise out to Darrell's Place last Saturday, and was a little let down. We both got the pork tenderloin sandwich with fries, and both thought the same thing: Bland. The batter itself has a great crunch and texture, and the piece of pork itself is excellent. However, it tasted like both the batter and the tenderloin were unseasoned. Our fries also were unseasoned, so I am not sure if this is normal, or whoever was in the kitchen fell asleep at the wheel. Customer service is very good, restrooms are clean and Darrell's is also right off the T-Bone bike trail. Overall very accessible and biker, cyclist and regular folks friendly. Willing to give it another shot, but it may be awhile. read more

This is my favorite place to go when I come home. It is on the corner of Highway 71 & Highway 44. They are great any time of the day, but my favorite is the homemade tenderloins with either cheddar crips or onion chips. And I still get excited about the cheap prices. If you want a beer to wash it all down you can get $1 draws!!! read more
