I've fought off writing Yelp reviews for over 5 years but decided to break that and write reviews for my wedding vendors who all did an amazing job at my wedding in April 2014. How and why Dave did the perfect job: 1) I contacted him 31 days before my wedding. Yep. Something suddenly came up (as they always do) and I was referred to him by my wedding venue. I called him in a panic and explained how my wedding was in one month and desperately needed an awesome DJ - I mean, who really wants to dance to lame music? He sacrificed his Coachella weekend for my wedding instead. 2) Despite my extremely late notice for my wedding, he still let me negotiate prices with him. We met middle ground. 3) He made the process of prepping for the wedding extremely easy by simply filling out 3 surveys online about my wedding day. 4) He showed up and blew everyone's socks off. I didn't need to worry about him setting up or anything. He just did his thing. My in-laws were extremely impressed with his violin playing and my friends loved his music choices for the dancing. Overall, he impressed the younger and older, the dancer and non-dancer, and everyone in between. 5) I got more compliments about him and his music selection than I got about my dress. Yea. Having a destination wedding is wonderful but can leave you blind when picking the best vendor for flowers, cake, photos and even music. With my venue's recommendation I reached out to Dave for music. We hit it off right away talking about my venue and the type of music I had in mind. Dave Kim played our wedding in October of 2014. He was absolutely spectacular. He played acoustic guitar during the cocktail hour, electric violin during dinner, and DJed our dancing. Every single part was phenomenal. He's an astounding musician. During dinner, he played the electric violin to an Alicia Keys song and didn't even mind that everyone at the head table sang/yelled along to it. (We'd had a couple cocktails at that point.) His violin playing is amazing. What also really impressed me is how well he can gauge your musical tastes. Every single song he played had the dance floor bumpin. He got compliments from everyone- from kids to seniors. He kept all of us on the dance floor until through the end of the wedding. The dancing never slowed down. Dave was also easy to work with throughout the process. His website is super easy to use, and he was very responsive. Dave was able to adapt to last minute requests and was extremely flexible. I am a winemaker and musician. My Persian wife and I are huge music fans, and we like music from all over the world, so we wanted to work with a DJ who would be open to our eclectic suggestions and whom had a wide spectrum of music in his library. Dave Kim was perfect for the job! My wife and I were married at the Carneros Inn, Napa Valley in Sept 2008. Dave took excellent care of all aspects of music and sound during the multi-location wedding. Seamless work. The ceremony was outdoors on the orchard lawn. We had about 60 guests. We had arranged for a talented young relative of ours to play solo Bach cello music during the wedding party processional. Dave placed outdoor speakers off to the side of the seating area and discreetly miked the cello. Sounded great! Some of our guests also spoke during the ceremony and Dave miked them perfectly. The officiant was also miked. The net result, every word was clearly heard by everyone in our group. Also, I had selected several songs for the pre-processional and the recessional, all to be played on cue to certain moments in the wedding ceremony. Dave played the music exactly as planned. The guests loved it and so did we. Later, on the hotel's patio and dining room Dave took care of spinning all the music for cocktails, dinner, the wedding toasts and finally all out dancing, Dave did a GREAT job playing selections we had given him on burned CDs and mixing it up with his own well chosen cuts. Part of DJing is handling the spontaneous music requests of excited, happy wedding guests. And at our wedding during the dancing a few of the wedding guests had CDs which they brought along for us to dance to - potentially sidetracking all pre-planned selections Dave and my wife & I had planned. It's important to plan for this and to let your friends and family know the music is planned out, but you've also got to be spontaneous and keep the good energy moving. In our case, no worries, Dave skillfully worked a few of the Persian dance songs into the mix and kept all our uncles, aunts and friends happy and partying. This takes some serious diplomacy as we had limited time to play everyone's music. Dave handled it like a diplomat. We ended the evening with the Talking Heads song "Burning Down the House" with everyone shaking it on the floor and doing a "train" dance around the room. We all wanted to keep dancing and Dave was ready to deliver but the hotel had a curfew, so we ended the evening at 10. I would highly recommend Dave Kim's complete musical services for your event. Ok, its time I write this review. What can I say, Dave is a talent beyond talents and made our wedding day a true dream. Music was SO important to us for our big day and it was a debate from the start with DJ versus band. Lots of relatives had strong opinions and we wanted to make sure we hired the right guy. We did a TON of research on Dave--we met him at his house to hear some samples, and emailed and called a ton of references. Dave knew we wanted some live music so he suggested a collaboration with Chris Clouse and Ryan Lucero--who played drums, and guitar and sang for us. Seriously, they were SO GOOD!!! Dave's electric violin was one of the coolest things EVER--he did our ceremony on his own and then collaborated for the reception. In October of 2008, my sister was married at the Biltmore Resport in AZ. What was suppose to be Dave Kim playing for 2 hrs before the reception turned into an all out ridiculous showing on his part. This guy is amazing. Not only did the cocktail party before the reception go into overtime of which he did not charge us for but he turned it into its own reception so to speak. It wasnt long before people from the crowd were up on stage with him jamming alongside on the guitar and 3/4 of the guests were dancing right along with them including me. Dave really made a ordinary event extraordinary. After the Reception Dave added yet another element to the reception part of the wedding. We had hired a 12 person all brass band to play during and after the dinner in a lovely room seperate from where the cocktail party was. What he did, blew away everyone at the wedding. Dave brought out his electric guitar and added such an amazing element to the already fantastic reception. If u were to look at the wedding video after the fact, u would see the change in the crowd when Dave started playing (by himself) mind u. As a matter a fact he was so good and the crowd loved it so much we were asking him to come up on stage in between each break the band took. It actually made the band step it up a notch as they did not want to be outdone by a one person man on a violin to their 12 person show.
