The only problem was he delivered more than he had promised in terms of fun! How many charter guides call to ask you if you wanted to rebook due to the freakishly hot weather? None that I ever met before. Our schedule didn't permit that so we foraged on with our planned day and time. Owen's boat made everything easier and it was spotlessly clean! There were only 3 of us on the boat with him which is part of the reason I booked with him - he has a 4 person maximum. I despise being crowded and there is no way a guide can properly guide if there are more people than that anyway. There were a half dozen other boats on the river, but no one else was smiling! Owen was pleasantly engaging and new how to read those in the boat and kept everyone engaged. If you want a guide who can only get you to the right place with the right gear and equipment call Owen! On a 2 week trip to the Washington state, it is going to remain one of my absolute favorite events! If you're looking for a guide who knows where to bring you and how to get fish call Owen, you won't be disappointed!!!

This…read moremost recent time I had a friend visiting from out of town who wanted to go fishing, specifically fly-fishing. We met Jeff at 6 in the morning and started on his drift boat and kept fishing until we were exhausted. Jeff worked hard to get us on the fish and we landed a nice steelhead and lots of trout. Jeff was very patient and his pointers were very good. The shore lunch was amazing. He brought a small propane grill and cooked us some amazing tuna and vegetables. He really knew the water and all the different holes to fish. I would recommend Stonefly Guide Services to anyone from beginners to the most experienced fishermen.

There's a big parking area where people can stop and you can take some steps down to a cemented area where there were multiple people fishing. You can see the huge cement damn across the water and it's actually really peaceful. We let our dog run around a bit and read about the dam. This was a totally impromptu stop but definitely a memorable one. For me, some of the most enjoyable things you can do is to learn about nature and science in a real life beautiful setting and Mossyrock Dam is a good example of that.

It is 606 feet high and opened in 1968. Its purpose is to produce renewable hydroelectric energy to supply energy to several homes in the Tacoma area. Mossyrock Dam impounds Cowlitz River which created Riffe Lake. I was able to stop at the overlook and spend some time walking around the top of the dam. There are some really pretty views of Riffe Lake from this location. There are two parks in the area around the lake that provide outdoor recreation. Both Taidnapam and Mossyrock Park have day-use facilities, camping, fishing and boat launches.

Mike Sullivan is a NW racing legend. He's raced everywhere and everything. So I decided to take…read moreis level II race school. First the staff consisting of himself, his wife, and his daughter are super nice. Great people and they helped me out even through a scheduling snafu. Next the instructors and how you're assigned to instructors works well. I was assigned to NW racer and HDFFC team guy Todd Horn. We'd start the day in the classroom session where Mike would lecture on various subjects. The beginning session is mundane and everything I've heard before. The following sessions specific to how he attacks the track is definitely worth the cost of admission. After the classroom we'd head out on the track with your riding instructor and practice what was discussed. Todd was relentless...I was doing this wrong...that wrong....but throughout the day I slowly improved so that I think during a race I'm hopeful I can take a few seconds off my lap time. The instructor pool consists of local fast guys....Tom Wertman, Ross Delong, Mike himself...several others. So no matter who you got assigned to you would get some good instruction on how to race. The ONLY complaint I had was that the speeds were mixed. I was certainly not the slowest as there was a guy out there who looks like he just learned to ride. But it can get a bit dangerous with the mix of bikes....this became evident as a guy ran into me in the chute (the fastest part of the track). He was trying to pass....went off the track to avoid 'a&# packing' me. Came back on and we came together and touched bars. As soon as I saw him I stiffened my arms to keep it straight....luckily we seperated before the wall and I made the turn. He ended up blowing both his tires out. Lucky neither of us died. But that's motorcycle racing and I associate this incident more with the guy being dumb than with the school itself.

At the bottom of the lake lies the small town of Riffe which was sacrificed for the good of all…read morewhen the lake was formed in 1968 with the construction of Mossyrock Dam, the town was covered with about two hundred feet of water although the deep end of the lake is approximately three hundred and sixty feet deep. The lake was originally named Davisson Lake after a Tacoma utilities director, who had no significance to Lewis County, as you can imagine this was about as popular as a fart in church so after years of petitions and resolutions the name was officially changed in 1976 to honor the small pioneer town that was drown so now it's known as Riffe Lake. Historic Facts: The town of Riffe was named for one of the original setters, Floyd Riffe, who was postmaster when the town formed in 1898. Floyd Riffe arrived in the area in 1895 after coming west from the Appalachians in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Many settlers who came to Riffe originated from the same Appalachian region as folks went west seeking prosperity and then sent word back home about the opportunities in Lewis County. The way of life in Riffe as well as the mountainous topography would have reminded many migrants of their former homes in West Virginia. Buddy Rose wrote a book call "Stories from Riffe, Washington" this is just one of many books written throughout the history of the United States regarding extinct cities sacrificed in the name of progress - none of the town's went quietly but none can win the war when Eminent Domain is used as the government's weapon of choice - "the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation". Buddy Rose grew up in the town of Riffe and lived there until 1963 when, at the age of 15, he and his mother were forced to sell their condemned home and property to the City of Tacoma and move to Centralia, Washington where he finished high school. After retiring from a 30-year career with the U.S. Forest Service in 2003, Rose took up free-lance writing, and wrote hundreds of outdoor articles for The Chronicle newspaper in Centralia. He is now a popular contributor of outdoor and local history articles for the East County Journal in Morton, Washington but there one thing that's certain he can never go home...
