They…read moremay still be located in a shopping centre with quite a few other shops and restaurants such as A Card Factory, Greggs and Subway but this ASDA store does not have a Cafe itself making it a nightmare to do all your things in one place, or find somewhere that avoids cross contamination for Coeliacs like me. I may have said for the Chadderton branch, yes this is okay but the Harpurhey branch does not have it, that is right they do have a nice range of products here but still this isn't a great store. I couldn't even get a bottled water, a member of staff told me they did not have any and for me to go over the road. I am sure a big store like ASDA would have bottled water, the staff could also of been more polite in telling me this or checked for me. It is unlucky to have 1 bad incident with a member of staff but another one in 2 constitutive visits is really disappointing. One thing I do not like about ASDA, Despite being cheaper than Tesco for most things is that they do not have a loyalty scheme like Tesco's Clubcard or The Nectar Card of Sainsburys. This ASDA Does have a large clothes section if you need to look for clothes and get your groceries, you can do both of these in the same place. This ASDA store has a nice range of Gluten Free sausage and even had some on sample, they have The Black Farmer, Heck, Butchers Selection and their own Extra Special range (Avaliable in quite a few interesting flavours!) This ASDA does also have a DVD section and follow the traditional ASDA look for most items such as Milk and Starbucks Frappucinio Beverages at the fridge on the back wall near the DVD and Clothes sections, which strech to the back of the store. This ASDA has a partnership with Cresta Cars, if you use the freephone here you can get a token which gives you 75p off your journey and they do come in a few minutes. Due to the range of some products, I can't give this ASDA one star but I really don't think it deserves more than two. This store has no coffee machine either, a few local ASDA stores do but it seems the store that is desperate for one (no cafe£, doesn't have one.

Upon a minor complaint over the food (mussels hadn't opened up showing they were off) he made absolutely no apology, just shrugged his shoulders and said they're only for show - which in a seafood risotto I'd argue they're slightly more than that.) We had also just popped in for a quick light meal (a main course each and bottle of wine) but when he realised we weren't ordering starters and deserts he was incredibly rude, and ended up taking the food off our table before we had actually finished (cutlery still in our hands!) I've still given 4 stars due to the amazing steak and decent atmosphere, but due to our second experience I don't think i'll be going back again!

So after blowing away the cobwebs on a chilly walk along the byways of Saddleworth, soaking in the views of the valleys and reservoirs, we completed the loop and were back at The Rams Head Inn for a much-needed Sunday feast. With two nippers in tow we opted for the side seating area away from the main dining room, which meant we were nicely self-contained and also fellow diners didn't have to endure 'toddler carnage'! You can select from their main menu here, as well as their bar menu. Not wanting to pass up on the chance to try a full meal I decided on wild boar & apple terrine for starter and lamb shank for mains - both were terrific; there was a generous portion of terrine and the lamb sloughed off the bone thanks to its cooking for 24 hours. If I see lemon meringue on any menu I'm compelled to order it and so it was done. Gorgeous it was too, more so with lashings of cream (I was telling myself I needed to replenish all those calories lost climbing over walls and ascending gravelled tracks...). For lighter dishes the bar menu certainly had some tempting options; ones I'll try when we come back again. Lovers of truly hearty and quality food, served in a friendly, rustic setting and surrounded by the wilds of moorland - look no further.

Luckily a friend recently recommended the Rams Head which has a nice moderate 3 mile walk that starts from from the back of the pub- win win! Anyway, enough of that exercise malarkey and onto the food! The Rams Head offers both a main menu for their dining room and a more casual lounge menu which was can be taken in their snug type room, complete with cosy wood burning stove. As we planned on our walk afterwards (and the winter sun was getting lower in the sky) we opted for the lounge menu which has an array of hot and cold sandwiches and 'something different' items such as game terrine and locally reared pork pies. Not being able to choose, my husband and I decided to order a hot beef and gravy sandwich and a slow roasted pork with stuffing, apple sauce and gravy sandwich to share. It's all pretty casual and so you order at the bar at which point my husband was persuaded to order a portion of the homemade chips as well. This turned out to be a brilliant decision as they were some of the best chips I've had in ages! When the sandwiches arrived they came in enormous white rolls with an equally good amount of filling and two little jugs of gravy for dipping and were absolutely delicious. You could tell the meat was really good quality (the menu advises on provenance) and the gravy that came with it was proper homemade gravy, as it should be. I can't comment on the boozy side of things as we opted for a cuppa each. This actually came served in a pot with Yorkshire's finest loose leaf and a generous pot of milk- always a bug bear of mine when they scrimp on the milk. They also have an onsite shop called The Pantry which sells locally raised meat, cheese and posh tea/biscuits etc, along with what looked to be a good selection of wine. The Pantry has a small number of tables if you prefer a cafe environment to eat in. This for me is a perfect country pub and I shall be returning here asap to try out the full menu. Get some food fro the deli and sit and watch the exchange square world go by....ahhhh bliss!!! Right next door is a massive wine colleciton for you should you decide to sample some while you're there. Apparently it's one of the most extensive wine lists in Manchester. At the back of the store, there's a small deli counter that stocks fresh cheese, parma ham, pasta and other delicacies, a luxury wine and champagne counter, a tiny bakery section with freshly baked bread and a wee grocery section selling organic fruit and veg. If they extended these sections I'd probably visit more but as it is, the Foodmarket is too limited and too damn eXpensive.

This family run business is an old stalwart of the area, pretty traditional and relies on the old favourites of Indian and Asian sweets and confectionary. They stock amongst other delights hot jalebis (the orange ones), barfi (the colourful square ones) and gulab jamun. This is a great place to raid for children's parties or for something a bit different for dessert at buffets or dinner parties. They are cheaper than nearby sweet shops Sanam Sweet House and Ambala with most at about £5 a kilo - sometimes over a pound cheaper than Delhi's competitors... Which is what we like to see, isn't it when you have a sweet tooth on a budget.
