want to express my deep concern about the traumatic experience my granddaughter, who is 4yrs old…read moreendured during her recent dental appointment at Smiles 4 Keeps in Scranton. They referred to this facility by her dentist. The appointment was scheduled for 11:00 a.m. My daughter believed she would be put to sleep for the procedure as she isn't comfortable around people she doesn't and doesn't like when the dentist touches her mouth. Instead my daughter informed when I walked in that they already went back and she was given Benadryl and she didn't know what was going on. This struck me as highly unusual. We then waited for two hours before any explanation. When I asked the hygienist, she said they needed X-rays first to develop a treatment plan and only one parent was allowed back. Her father and I sat back to wait for them. A little while after she texted and said that they were going to pull her tooth without general anesthesia. I was alarmed because Karmen fears the dentist and might not cooperate. When they finally came out of the room both were visibly upset. My daughter told me they used local anesthesia but also restrained her while she was crying and blood was smearing all over her face. She said the doctor wasnt comforting and looked annoyed at her response to trauma they were inflicting on her. When questioned, the hygienist said, "It's normal--kids act like this." Upon check-out, my daughter was told the co-payment was $238. After asking for clarification because it was private insurance the receptionist looked it over again and magically the bill was now $141.00. I told her I would pay half and that's it. I felt like after waiting three hours to have my granddaughter tortured was enough. The entire experience felt abusive, and the combination of restraint, lack of clear communication, emotional harm, and billing issues was deeply disturbing. I have since learned that Smiles 4 Keeps, like similar pediatric dental chains, receives the majority of its revenue from Medicaid rather than private insurance. This raises serious concerns that children from lower-income families--those least able to advocate for themselves--are being subjected to unnecessary, traumatic, and potentially unsafe procedures in order to generate profit. I also understand that Smiles 4 Keeps and related dental chains have been connected to lawsuits and public controversies in the past, including allegations of Medicaid fraud and abusive practices toward children. This isn't just about one bad visit. These chains have been in the news before, facing lawsuits for inhumane care such as extracting teeth without anthesia and adding noise barriers. Parents, please be careful where you take your children. And for those who've had similar experiences, speak up this type of abuse needs to stop.

The Hazleton location charged me for services they did not provide, namely a cleaning and fluoride…read moretreatment. When I disputed it with the insurance the billing person from Smiles 4 Keeps claimed it was probably a clerical error and had someone from corporate call me to investigate. The person who called me stated that if the child is Autistic like my daughter the company considers even getting a toothbrush in the child's mouth a full dental cleaning. This seems like fraud. Hopefully I am not the only one reporting them for this.
