Which was your favorite James Garner character?…read more Was it the James Garner who played Bret Maverick in the 1950's series Maverick https://youtu.be/u4jUwXV_CIU (and reprised in the movie with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster)? Was it the one who played Jim Rockford as the ex-con turned investigator for the six seasons and 123 episodes between 1974 and 1980 of Rockford Files https://youtu.be/1pGGU_cbrBk? Or is your favorite James Garner the one who earned an Academy Award nomination opposite Sally Field in the 1985 film Murphy's Romance https://youtu.be/piU2gJdhgNI? It's a tough call for me, but I did like him in the 2000 movie Space Cowboys where he starred with Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland as four older "ex-test pilots" who are sent into space to repair an old Soviet satellite. https://youtu.be/gnGYgy744vU The people of Norman have spoken and it's the Bret Maverick version with this 2006 statue on Main Street where it crosses Legacy Trail Park. James Garner was born here in Norman Oklahoma and still considered himself a native despite living in California for fifty years. Accompanying the statue is a plaque listing his many film and television credits. Garner passed away in 2014 at age 86. [Review 16215 overall - 55 in Oklahoma - 1721 of 2021.]

The whole installation commemorates the Land Run of 1889, when settlers surged into the Unassigned Lands to stake homesteads in what would become Oklahoma Territory. The scale of the installation here is enormous, with dozens of figures charging forward. Horses stretched mid-stride, wagons tilting, every dace carved with urgency. One has clearly fallen in their haste. It really does tell the tale. We had the place mostly to ourselves which made it easy to slow and take in the detail. The only interruption was a family who decided the clearly posted "no climbing" sign was more of a suggestion than a rule and that's why we can't have nice things. Grrr! But even that didn't take away from the artistry. Paul Moore spent more than twenty years bringing this to life and the result is one of the largest bronze sculpture installations in the world, honoring the settlers who raced out on April 22, 1889. The Monument consists of 47 bronze statues in total. This includes 38 people, 34 horses, three wagons, a cannon, a dog, and a frightened jackrabbit. They are all bigger than life and has such great detail. I think you could stand there for hours and never see all of the details. It stands at about 100 yards or so and stretches across a small river. Well worth the visit. Best access is then the bass pro parking lot all the way to the back and under the interstate.

This is more than just a memorial -- it's a deeply moving tribute that honors the lives lost, the survivors, and the heroes of that tragic day. The outdoor memorial is beautifully designed and incredibly peaceful. The Field of Empty Chairs, the reflecting pool, the Survivor Tree, and the "gates of time" create such a solemn and respectful atmosphere. Every detail feels intentional and meaningful. Even on a return visit, walking through the site brings a heavy but important emotional impact that stays with you. The indoor museum is also excellent -- well-organized, informative, and respectful. Whether it's your first time or your third, this place leaves a lasting impression. It's educational, reflective, and incredibly well-maintained. If you're anywhere near Oklahoma City, do yourself a favor and make time to visit. It's one of the most powerful memorials I've ever been to.

I had friends that both survived and were killed in this bombing, so, coming here is sad (the loss and tragedy), comforting (the remembrance and celebration of life), angering (the lack of empathy and remorse that several people were involved in purposely killing on such a scale--intentionally parking the vehicle borne explosive next to the daycare), and hopeful (the victims and families will be remembered in love for generations to come). I have more ties to this event than what will be mentioned here, but I am glad I took the time to go back. I wont wait so long for my next return. Its a must visit! It shows the power God has to bring people together through tragedy. The Oklahoma standard.
