Pretty much everything including the furniture is original FLW and lovingly cared for across only 2 owners over the past 70+ years. It's only a few minutes from downtown Ann Arbor and yet within the house it feels like you're in the middle of nowhere not only surrounded by nature but part of it. Plan to spend some significant time in the house if you're staying here, and watch the squirrels, chipmunks, and deer outside that are often right by the windows or will stare at you since you're kind of in their wilderness environment. There are of course quirks about the house and rules given the significance of this FLW "Usonian" house and the costs to maintain and/or repair anything that might have issues. If you're a FLW fan or just like unique experiences definitely check out this house that can be rented through AirBnB or VRBO. There are 7 FLW houses in the U.S. which are available to rent as far as I know, and I'm going to say this is likely the best. Bravo!

I was looking for unique accommodation in Ann Arbor (other than middle-of-the-road corporate…read morehotels, very hard to find), when I found this unique Frank Lloyd Wright-designed vacation rental on V.R.B.O. So, I decided to book it for a couple days over the Labour Day weekend. The property owners were very nice to us, and made sure we were set for our sojourn in Ann Arbor. Renting this home is not for everybody, that's for sure. You have to put up with F.L.W.'s eccentric designs, and just go with the flow, and see the beauty of this particular home. For, the beds are not rectangular, more triangular. The bathrooms are small, the doors narrow (Mr. & Mrs. Palmer were petite people, as was F.L.W.). Living and dining rooms are spacious, yet, feature F.L.W.'s signature (hard) custom furniture, not exactly comfortable as more modern furniture we're all used to by now. The kitchen is quite small, but, workable for the simplest self-catering - don't expect a Viking range! Remember, this is a 50's home, pretty much left 'as is' in that decade of design. To conclude, one really must love architecture and design in order to make the most out of a stay here. Do not rent this property thinking it will be luxurious and modern by 2000's standards, this will be a big disappointment for you.

The level of quiet you experience out here is unmatched! The only way to describe it out here is like being in a sound proof room. The cabins were very clean, no tv which was perfect! A box to place your cellphones in. As you see in the picture they do provide you with a landline phone. I suggest that when going make sure you take paper plates and plastic utensils. Definitely take your own drinking water. I also brought an industrial garbage bag. I cooked my favorite foods, everything was delicious. Bring your own seasonings. They provide the basic seasonings and a few packets of olive oil. The one think that bothered me was the smell of the hot water, even after running it a while there was this odor. Complementary body wash, shampoo and conditioner. 2 burner stove and a mini fridge. But what really blew my mind, is they thought of everything! There are bowls and plates on site. Silverware. A fry pan and a sauce pan. Tp and paper towel. A comfey queen bed with pillows and a comforter. There is even coffee / tea / hot cocoa for a price. Firewood and fire starters for a price. We will definitely be back again. I 100% recommend this place to anyone and everyone. I am actually trying to get my friends group to come here instead of camping for now on.

Absolutely the best family-friendly vacation property ever!…read more If I could give more starts I would! Our experience with the host Andrew and this rare gem of a property was the best we have ever experienced. We all fell in love with this tucked away little paradise of a home and we will definitely be back! From our initial interactions with Andrew it was clear that he was an exceptional host - warm and caring, as well as incredibly responsive and attentive to the smallest details. Our group of 8 consisted of 4 adults, 2 toddlers, and 2 seniors and from the moment we opened the door we were all instantly enamoured with the house. We arrived to bright afternoon rays beaming into the sunroom and lighting up the large open concept main floor which beckoned all of us over to bask in the warm afternoon light on comfortable couches. And as we continued to settle into the remarkable house we were thrilled with all the details that seemed to anticipate our every desire... the large deck overlooking the river, the luxurious bathrooms, the generous stash of board games and entertainment, the spacious and fully outfitted kitchen complete with a pro waffle iron and complimentary waffle mix, the plush and incredibly comfortable beds, the working fire place... and of course the massive ships slipping by majestic and silent. We had plenty of space to sprawl out on the main floor and each find our own little quiet nook when we wanted one and we all slept wonderfully well even with two toddlers just down the hall from each other. I really cannot say enough about this incredible property and strongly recommend it to anyone - whether you're a large group like us or a couple looking for a romantic retreat - it's an absolutely magical little spot!

More important to you, it's nestled in a beautiful neighborhood about one mile to most elements of the U of M central campus. So you can walk, if you're so inclined, and five to ten minutes in a car gets you to any number of important or interesting places. Parking is on the street, which turned out to be no problem, as there always were plenty of spaces near the entry sidewalk. Perhaps it's helpful to say that the Stone Chalet campus is the site of a former Unitarian church. That's how I remember it, driving/jogging by during student years. Therese remembers it was the site of piano recitals. Anyway, the former "main building" has been converted to an event center (we didn't spend much time there) and the former parsonage converted to guest quarters. Our room was Alice-in-Wonderland themed, spacious and cozy for an autumn visit. Breakfast was ordered via an app, with many choices, including gluten-free options for Therese. If you want a good and even inspiring conversation, seek out the owner Vincent, who can share some fascinating stories about real estate and his efforts to purchase, maintain, and make profitable the Stone Chalet property. We enjoyed our time here, and wish Vincent, Daisy, family and staff, all the best. Thank you, Stone Chalet.
