I see Dr. Gazda at this practice. I too was a skeptic (and fearful) about chiropractic care but several months ago in desperation over neck and shoulder pain that wasn't getting better and which made it impossible to turn my head, I made an appointment. Dr. Gazda did an assessment and was patient and understanding about my concerns. She explained the what and why of the adjustments she recommended and I put my trust in her hands. After my first visit, which included neck and back adjustments, I felt almost immediate relief. I had a headache the next day as my body adjusted but my neck pain and mobility was significantly improved. After a month of weekly follow up sessions I was pain free. I recently went back to see Dr. Gazda for lower back pain brought on by overzealous gardening and weeding. She again provided an assessment and adjustments that provided significant relief. Dr. John McCarthy is a phenomenal practitioner. He has in-depth knowledge of human physiology coupled with the ability to communicate complex issues in simple understandable terms. I came to him with a sports injury. He outlined a clear treatment plan and buttressed that plan with practical progressive exercises and stretches I could do at home. The combination of his adjustments and suggested exercises stabilized the injury and set me on course to regain strength and increase mobility. I had acute, level 8 to 10, sciatica pain for 25 days in June before finally have an epidural injection. The injection stopped the unbearable pain but pain persisted at about level 6. I decided to try Davis Square Chiropractic a couple of weeks ago as the next step in trying to avoid surgery. Dr Gazda did an evaluation and then began weekly treatments. Accessibility / Parking: Davis Sq. Chiropractic is bus & train accessible (right across the street). Meters are available (and some 2-hour spots) for parking right in front of the office. Office: Appointments are made quick and easy, and I can call to reschedule at anytime with a quick call. Waits are never more than 5 min. long (in my personal experience). The entire office is nice and CLEAN (which is a huge deal for me)! They also have refreshments and magazines available in the waiting area. Care: I've been visiting Dr. Herzog for about 3 months now due to suffering with lower back pain after a bad car accident. I didn't think anything was wrong post-accident because it took a few months for the pain to kick in fully, but nonetheless needed care. The very first day Dr. Herzog examined me she discovered I had a Herniated Disc and Sciatica... and then all of the symptoms and pain (in specific areas) I had made sense! Since then I've gone back weekly/bi-weekly and have felt a significant reduction of my back pain. She even gave me little tips (that I'd never heard of) like, "walk barefoot more often" for my flat feet. She explained how walking barefoot is an ideal way to improve your proprioception (sense of position) and kinesthetic sense. Basically better posture = less pain & stronger/better healing. I also had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Shadrick recently who stretched and cracked anything that could be cracked in my upper body lol! It was amazing! I felt so fluid and loose after! He used an almost completely different technique than what I was used to with Dr. Herzog, but I actually appreciated how they had such a variety of care all under the same roof of practice. The verdict is still out on the therapeutic benefits of chiropractics, but when I threw my back out CLOSING A PIZZA BOX, this office came to my rescue. Not really. I went to them (slowly, painfully), and they provided the rescue. Clean facilities, featuring a private room, and two chiro tables in a shared space separated by a hospital curtain. So if you're embarrassingly crackly, request the single. A 25-minute initial session packed 15 minutes of education with ten of therapy and suggested exercise. Truth be told, I felt immediate relief, and Doc Scott's engaging bedside manner answered questions and manipulated my spine with the same genuine smile and sadistic sparkle in his eyes. Subsequent sessions ran 10 minutes, at the raw cost of ~$85 (they're in-network for most insurance companies, though, so expect only a co-pay). My leg had been feeling numb. It was freaking me out, so I went to my PCP who told me it could have been anything from a lack of B-12 to MS. They took some blood and said if the blood test don't come up with anything that they would send me to a neurologist but the test would be back in a week. A FUCKING WEEK! Of course I'm scared out of my mind and Kelly G. says (after telling me she'll still marry me even if I have MS or leprosy or split personality disorder or whatever. She's a good woman.) I should see a Chiropractor. I called and they got me an appointment the same day. The Dr. explained everything to me and showed me how my alignment was a little messed up by stretching my legs and showing me how one was out of whack by comparing it to the other. I walked out not completely cured but my leg feels much better from the knee down which is quite an improvement. I have another appointment for Thursday and I am now a believer. read more

In the interests of full disclosure, I should probably say that I'd never been to a chiropractor until I saw Dr. Shadrick two weeks ago. Like a lot of other people I spend the day at a computer desk working. Unlike most other people, I spent a whole lot longer at it than a 9-5 might merit, and a lot of my recreation hours are also spent that way, since I'm sort of a video game nut. Short story: I am seriously turning into the hunchback of Notre Dame. I wasn't sure that Dr. Shadrick could do anything for me, despite my increasing discomfort (other than tell me to stop slouching). To my relief, he not only confirmed that he could help me but he also verified a few of the things I'd noticed about my own body, like an imbalance in my hips, and assured me that they were ALL able to be corrected. I've had two visits, and I can already see some improvement. I was cautioned by friends (and Dr. Shadrick) that I might be sore after some of my appointments, but I haven't been even a little bit sore. I like to think this reflects his ability to gauge how much your body can handle at any given time. As for Dr. Shadrick himself? The rest of the reviews have pretty much nailed it: he's the kind of guy you instantly like, which is good, because within fifteen minutes of meeting him he's gonna be climbing all over you. Unassuming, easy to talk to, laid back, extremely friendly. Sitting in the cute little office waiting room, chances are good you'll catch him chatting with some other client as though they're lifelong buddies. I didn't think about that being an important part of choosing a chiropractor until after my first appointment, after which I realized it's kind of a contact sport! Couldn't have asked for a better introduction to seeing a chiropractor. If you've never been but you've thought about going, I recommend checking this office out! read more

Great place! My wife and I have both been going there for about a year. Nicest people you're likely to meet. They make appointments, but I've never had a problem just walking in whenever and asking to be seen. A normal session includes lying on a relatively comfortable chiropractic bench for 10-15 minutes with a heat pad on your back, then a quick massage from one of those vibrating things you can get at Brookstone or Sharper Image and then only use once before you forget about it forever in the back of your closet, and then the Dr. makes you back sound like a bowl of rice crispies, which actually feels really good. read more

Since my original review, I had to undergo disc surgery. Dr Shadrick did what he could, but once my condition (a very herniated disc) made me unable to walk, Dr Shadrick told me that I needed more than he could do and got me into a pain clinic STAT. The surgery was a huge success luckily (see my review for Dr Saechin Kim). I have been continuing to see Dr Shadrick for maintenance every 2 months and as I stated previously, he is the real deal. Skeptics pay attention: Dr Shadrick will undoubtedly win you over. read more

I was recently having serious neck / left shoulder discomfort with low mobility of my left arm and I made an appointment to see Dr. Scott and he was (thankfully) able to take me on short notice. Have to completely agree with the testimonial from Chris below that he is a super nice guy and does a great job of diagnostic checks to assess the causes of the discomfort. We went through a serious of motions to check my posture and alignment of my neck, back, spine, shoulders, etc and then he made serious of adjustments to help relieve the tension in my back and shoulder muscles caused by a slight misalignment in my mid-to-upper spine. Bottom line is my back / neck feels great today after the visit and I'm very happy to say I don't have any discomfort. He recommended a series of stretches and posture corrections that will help prevent this problem from recurring in the future. He is a great guy who knows his stuff and whom you can trust to help address your chiropractic needs! Five stars! read more

This is a review I have been trying to write for awhile because its hard to describe the amazing level of care I have received as a patient at Davis Square Chiropractic under the care of Dr. Shadrick. I have seen two other Chiropractors in the past and was skeptical walking into his practice about a year ago, but my back/neck problems and pain were getting to a point where a specialist had recommended cortisone injections, and I did not want to become dependent on them as I had seen in other people with a similar diagnosis. Pain killers weren't an option so I figured I would give seeing a Chiropractor another shot. I walked in knowing that I was not going to be "cured", and that there was no cure for my poor spine and neck, (x-ray shows I have no curve in my neck, which throws my entire spine out of whack) and it was all about pain management. The very first appointment lasted over an hour where I had a long talk with Dr. Shadrick about everything- lifestyle, any medications I was taking, my pain and how long, what triggered it, what I did for work, hobbies, etc. Then he did a very thorough physical examination of my range of motion, and examining my pain points in my back and neck. I started off going weekly for adjustments and the goals were simple, and have been the same since- simply to get everything "moving", and shifted back to where it should be. (side note- about 6 months into treatment my PCP was kind enough to order X-rays of my spine and neck which everything Dr. Shadrick had mentioned my back and neck were indeed true, and that I was on the right path with the adjustments I was receiving- crazy accurate) Not only did he adjust me but he showed me stretches that would helpful. Now I go when I feel I need to, and my body certainly can tell me when I am due for an adjustment. I will go for a weekly adjustment for a month or so, then will be ok for a couple a months, then rinse and repeat. Go see Dr. Shadrick. If you have any doubt about seeing him don't. If you've had a bad experience with a Chiropractor before, trust me- you will forget all about it. He knows his stuff, and while it seems scary at first, before you know it- you will start to feel better. He is extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of anatomy, physiology and certainly knows his stuff on sports medicine as well! He truly knows how the human body works, and why you feel the pain you feel, and what causes it. His warm, friendly personality and his amazing memory about how you're doing and what is going on in your life, (trust me on this one- you have to see it to believe it) will amaze you. And finally, his staff (especially Steph) are incredibly amazing and go above and beyond to accommodate patients with appointments, insurance questions, and truly are the backbone to the practice. Working in health care for the past 5 years on the insurance and hospital side the care I receive here is one that amazes me and reminds me that medicine really does still have a heart. read more

I almost don't want to leave this review as I worry about difficulty getting scheduled, but DSC has been great to me, and others deserve to get the best treatment out there. At age 28, I've seen over 7 chiropractors in my life... Dr. Shadrick is by far the best. I've been seeing him for going on 2 years now, and with his help, my back - actually, entire body - is in the best shape it's ever been. He takes the time to get to know his patients, makes sure you don't leave the office having any unanswered questions, and explains things in layman's terms. He's really just an all-around great guy. When Dave isn't available, I'll see Dr. Gazda who is also a great chiropractor and a wonderful addition to DSC. Steph at the front desk is also awesome, and super-helpful. Davis Square Chiro has a cumulative 5 stars for a reason. Dr. Shadrick is a really cool guy and a great doctor. He identified my problem - upper-crossed posture- on the first visit, and from then on he paired exercises and stretches with back and neck cracking and spine theory. After 10 or so visits he said you're done - your alignment has improved 80%, just keep up with what I taught you. I love having a pain-free back but I miss going to the doctor's office! read more

Although it looks like Dr. Shadrick doesn't need my added support due to the many awesome reviews he already has, I feel like I must write the review I've been meaning to write for the past couple of years. Even after moving to JP, I still make the trip to Somerville to see Dr. S because he's that awesome. I've been seeing him for a couple of years now and have no complaints. He helped me through some difficult times of neck & back pain. Now, I only go every 3-4 weeks for maintenance and have been feeling great for over a year! In addition to how amazing the chiropractic care is, Dr. S also gets to know his patients & makes them feel at ease. Even though I'm only there for 15-30 minutes once a month, I feel like I'm at home. As a transplant from the Midwest, where everyone is friendly & doctor's offices do feel like family, it is refreshing to find a place in the Boston area where I feel that same way. I've been going to this office for about a year or year and a half. When I went in there I had back, neck, and shoulder pain, accompanied by these insane headaches where pain would shoot through the back of my jaw, up my ear, and through the back of my head. I like Dr. Shadrick a lot. He explains things well, and he's good at dealing with fears of going to a Chiropractor. Chiropractic, at least with Dr. Shadrick, is not at all what some have scared me into believing. The manual adjustments are more gentle than I expected, and they are only one piece of my treatment plan. I often leave feeling relaxed. My back pain and neck stiffness are improving, which is great after years of chronic pain. I can't say I'm cured, but I'm hopeful that I will keep improving. The office is in a great location. Plus, the young ladies who work at the front desk/reception are really nice. They always seem happy to serve me and are really good about helping me reschedule when I have a scheduling conflict. read more

Dr. Herzog adjusted my back over the course of multiple visits and it's never felt better. I crashed into a tree while skiing this past winter and injured my lower back- it was sore every day for almost all day to varying degrees (think sinusoidal pattern). I spent some time traveling (and living in self denial) before I finally went to Davis Chiropractic. She performed an initial analysis, and then told me at a high level what was wrong, and how she could fix it over the course of several appointments. True to her word, my back steadily progressed and 4-5 visits later I feel fantastic- as good or better than the seconds leading up to my crash. Highly recommended if you have any sort of back issues. It's included in our insurance, so we don't end up paying at all. I've worked with a couple different doctors here, my fiancée with a third, and we've been happy with all of them. In addition to giving good medical care, their service is always friendly, and they've even been gracious about it when we need to reschedule (sometimes at the last minute, or even if you missed an appointment entirely.) We got a card from them in the mail just once, and I was afraid it would be a bill, telling us we had run out of visits from our insurance -- it turned out to be a thank you card for a friend of ours who apparently started visiting them at our recommendation. Dr. Shadrick is the best! If you are on the fence about going to see him... stop thinking and go, you won't regret it! I had never been to a chiropractor before and I always thought the process would be more difficult and/or annoying as far as getting an appointment and dealing with insurance. I was so wrong! (Of course, this may vary by insurance company, I have Tufts POS). A friend mentioned that she was going to see him, I asked her about her experiences, she raved about him and then mentioned me during her appointment, he said he was taking new patients and I should call, so I called, and was offered an appointment the next day! (This all took place in about an hour's time). I ended up going in the following week for my initial appointment/meeting with Dr. Shadrick and was surprised to have someone actually listening to me with interest and wanting to know all the little details about my issues. Never once did I feel that "hurry up and tell me only the important stuff" feeling that you get from some doctors. He even welcomed my husband in the room at the end, pointing out that he (my husband) is the one I spend the most time with and would be able to help me out with certain exercises that would make my process easier. I've been going for just under a year now, usually about once a month, to strengthen and straighten my back muscles to improve my posture and reduce some lower back pain. I definitely notice a huge improvement, even though I am not always great about keeping up my end of the process (exercises to do at home). I always leave feeling better and walking a little taller (then I hunch over my desk and eagerly await my next visit...) Plus, he's just a really nice guy who clearly adores his family, seems happy to see everyone, and remembers the little things about your life that you told him last time. As the most ringing endorsement I can think of, the only reason I stopped seeing Dr. Shadrick was because I moved across the country. He is a thoughtful provider who cares deeply about the total well-being of his patients. He is willing to explain as much or as little as you want about what he's doing and why things are happening in your body.
