This historic general store has kept it's historic 'feel' and created three modern businesses in one building. First, the general store. This section seems the smallest and includes produce, meats, honey and baked goods from local vendors. You have to look closely, because much of the general merchandise such as 'health & beauty' and 'cleaning' goods are on shelves near the floor- under low table tops displaying other items. Just look closely, it's all there. A couple of metal shelf units display seasonings, pantry staples, baking goods, and coolers on the back wall include dairy, produce, meats and frozen foods. You will also find lovely gift items in this area. The next section you wander into is a book shop. About a quarter of the space is a cute little children's section with books and toys for sale. Very cozy. A large sofa takes up a portion opposite this and several display tables and book shelves round out the area. Some of the book titles are very interesting and there are plenty of other paper goods for sale such as hand painted note cards, notebooks, pens and such. The last area of the store holds a cafe. They did a very good business while we were there and many people didn't wait around as all the tables were full. We ordered a couple of beverages (a lemonade and a latte) and two sandwiches. They were OK. The décor in there is very eclectic. Tables vary from six to two person and the six person table appeared to be treated as the 'community' table where anyone can sit if a seat is free. All the staff we encountered throughout the store were very friendly. Everything is well organized and clean. One restroom is located across from the cafe cashier. A small, dirt parking area is near the general store entrance and a few street side spots along the length of the building. If you are going to the Café, a street side door at the end of the building goes directly into that area instead of walking through the whole building. There is a small outdoor dining area, at the back, behind the parking area, accessed through the book store or general store 'back doors'. All prepared food is 'counter service'. read more

Wow. If I could live here, I would. The atmosphere is unmatched, homey, rustic, outdoorsy and beautiful. I love the store section, lots of local food and trinkets. As well as many bird and nature books. I decided to get a meal here and I think it was the best hotdog I've ever eaten in my life. Absolutely amazing. The coffee is perfectly balanced and the cold foam is exquisite. I'm so happy I stopped by and will absolutely come back again. Davoll's General Store is such a magical local treasure - I grew up going to Horseneck Beach in Westport, and Davoll's has somehow maintained their rare charm to still feel like "home" all of these years later. Davoll's is the perfect mix of general store, book store and café all in one. Their general store has a wonderfully curated selection of local products and unique antiques to shop from (...I always end up leaving Davoll's with something I never came there for, haha!). Their bookstore is whimsical, with the cutest book nook. Staying a few days in the winter off-season in a home near Horseneck Beach in Westport, Mass. I was settling in and in search of a place for breakfast. Davoll's General Store in Dartmouth Mass. fits the bill perfectly. After a very pretty 20-minute drive from the beach area, winding through miles of dry-stone wall works (and a full-size Dutch windmill!) I arrived to find a lovely combination of general store, bookstore, and café. Given that this visit was during the winter I had no trouble navigating the multiple shops. I found and purchased one of Ian McEwan's early novels (On Chesil Beach), ordered a mug of hot chocolate ($4.50) and a heated ham and cheese croissant (Black Forest ham, Swiss cheese, arugula, fig jam, and Dijon on a croissant, $13); then I settled in for a quiet and calming breakfast. This place is such a gem, my wife and I come here for breakfast often and it's always excellent. Staff is kind and inviting, great options from breakfast sandwiches to pastries, good variety and delicious coffee. Always trying new things with their specials too so that's fun. We have had dinner here once and that was also a great experience and a good value. The overall atmosphere of Davoll's is what I love most, full bar, books, stationary, quality goods, groceries and locally produced provisions in a historical setting, what more could you ask for. read more

It's been a while since I've had a WOW and AHA moment as enjoyable as the half-hour or so I spent in this store this morning. Neither too big nor too small, the general store and bookshop area give a carefully curated appearance and selection for perusal. In both sections, there seemed to be an effort to gather items that would be used and not merely looked at. I went on to the cafe and enjoyed a tasty and fresh scone coupled with a golden milk latte. It was a nice surprise to see turmeric and other slightly offbeat selections on the menu there. It was also clearly a local, yet welcoming, vibe, with the barista catching up with the probably-regular patron who followed me, and two or three small groups of locals sitting elsewhere in the space catching up on the new year. read more

It was a cute store but I was expecting an actual country store, website is slightly deceiving. Easy to find and has a parking lot with potholes with room for a family of 5. Went inside. NOT handicap accessible, there was a railing but 2 steps, both pretty steep. Managed to get in and the country store area is smaller than my kitchen. Very limited selection, more groceries than gifts. Extremely overpriced. Book selection was nice but I'm an e-reader person so just got a few ideas. 2 steps down into restaurant, no railing. Wasn't going to risk falling. Very disappointing and was really looking forward to checking the store out. Love the book club idea but again. Inaccessible. The one employee I saw was nice and if you had more product and made it accessible, I'd definitely check it out again. Really wish I could give a better review. Quirky, cute, traditional, clever, modern, simple, artsy, yet unpretentious. This little gem defies description. Once just a very basic old country store with milk, eggs and dry goods, it's now added a café, bookstore, gift shop, and limited hours bar with mostly lunch or snack menu. Probably the perfect place to stop on a bike ride or for coffee or to pick up a last minute gift or to take the kids or to hang out or to sit in the garden or to try something new or for taco night or trivia or maybe when they have lobster rolls or for an early Friday night light dinner or to pick up some ice cream or cheese and crackers or, oh I don't know, get some milk, eggs or dry goods. Really love the overall look and vibe of Davoll's - the cafe side has good food, coffee and beer and the staff is pleasant. The ambiance of the cafe side is also quite cozy, have met friends for drinks or coffee there numerous times. Interesting selections of what they have on the market side overall but in general it's very catered to tourists in terms of price and offerings. I suppose that's there largest demographic so I understand for the most part. read more

I love Davoll's but recently I've noticed a shift in the quality of the food from the cafe. I feel like they used to put extra effort and care into each and every dish, making the extra trip and price worth it, but now I feel like the staff is rushed and no longer cares about the product. This change has only happened in the last few months so I hope this degradation doesn't last long. Davoll's has been such a great addition to this area so it would be a shame to see it flounder. read more

My husband and I had a very rare night out. We stuck close to home and tried a Scotch Tasting at Davoll's. $25 each for a splash of 4 different kinds of scotch. considering the cost of the scotches offered i thought it was a bargain with a small cheese board thrown in. I was so happy to have time alone in a comfy spot amongst our neighbors. I hope there will be more nights like this! Davoll's General Store is one of the oldest general stores in the US. These days the general store is more of a gift shop than a candy store. But they still have some candy. There's parking in the front and the back of the building. Interesting area. It's in southern Dartmouth (not to be confused with South Dartmouth, which is actually east of Dartmouth) along the road to Demarest Lloyd State Park. (The park/beach is generally open from Memorial Day to Labor Day). There's a farm stand nearby (Alderbrook Farm). It's open year round. Up the road (Russell Mills road) there's a pottery store. Further down the road (Horseneck Road) there's another gift shop. I saw a lot of old colonial houses. And lots of farmland by the ocean. This part of the state is kind of unique. I guess it hasn't changed much since the 1950's. read more

How in the heck did this place get such a glowing review in the Globe. I love general stores. The ones in Rockport, Brewster and Steve Carrell's place in Marshfield Hills are exceptional. This? Not do much. There's very little inventory for one. Where are the local crafts? The hand-crafted jewelry. The knick-knacks and toys from yesteryear. This place has the tiniest bit of a bunch of things, no great selection of anything. The penny candy secretin is tiny and uninviting. The cafe's baked goods selection -- or any foods-- was non-existent, but it was toward the end of the day (still...). The book collection? A couple of shelves and a table of "local-ish" books. There was some local honey, I think, but a lot of stuff like NY bagels and fairly generic wrapped candy and other foods. Not really a local showplace. The girl behind the counter was courteous but not warm and welcoming. The lady in the cafe paid me barely any attention at all. I drove an hour and a half from Bellingham for this? I might as well have going to the local gas station convenient shop instead. It would have been a more productive trip. read more

When I go to Davoll's I feel like I've stepped back in time; in a good way of course! They offer candies that you can only find in specialty candy stores or online! We really love the new version of this place. The cafe is still starting, not fully up and running, but perfect for coffee (delicious) or a beer in the pub at night. The selection of beers, books, and food is small but very carefully chosen and excellent. In the evening when we went the pub had candlelight and music, which was perfect. Hopefully they will get the kitchen up and running soon as I do worry that people expecting more food will be disappointed, and I really want this place to succeed! read more

This was my childhood. But really. Everything about this store. We grew up in a summer community exactly 5 miles from here. i remember the day when our parents let us ride our bikes here by ourselves, it felt like we were officially adults when in reality we were probably only 11. The windy roads, the wind in our hair, coca cola falls.. all for the luxury of pure sugar. Not only sugar, but sugar in the form of penny candy. They had sour straws of all colors, bubble tape, tootsies, sixlets, smarties, neccos.. you name it, they had it. All for some sort of cheap cents. The lure of the candy is no longer there. I went last week and they had about 4 types of candies and all were over $1. Maybe it's a part of growing up, maybe its the economy. Either way it was a painful 10 miles for expensive candy. However, besides many cavities and cherished memories, Davoll's offers South Dartmouth something for everyone. They have nooks and crannies of books, shirts, clothing, collectibles of all kinds, dolls, houses, quilts, Christmas decorations. If you like collecting random things, they will have it for you. Especially the Christmas villages, my mother comes here every year to get a new "Dept. 56" house for our village. The floors creak, they probably haven't been washed since the store was built many many years ago, the windows are dusty, the cashiers probably are lifetimers. But the atmosphere is simply priceless. When you enter into Davoll's Country Store, you definitely feel like you have been transported to a time long past. At first I thought it was just a little variety store, then I stepped into the collectibles room. I had never see such an array of Byers Choice Carolers, Possible Dreams Santas, Radko ornaments and much much more. The staff is very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. They know their products and help you in deciding on your purchase. It's a quaint out of the way place, stop by and visit them, have a hot chocolate on your way out. Love this place. read more

You feel like you have stepped back in time when you go to Davoll's. That's normally a great thing when you are talking about ambience, but not necessarily a great thing when you are talking about the wares that this store sells. I felt like if I was 20 years older I would appreciate what they have to sell more than I did. Fabric bolts, quilts and Christmas ornaments are a few of the millions of things that they selling at this deceivingly large store. If you are really into collecting those really expensive Caroler statues or Christmas village statues this is your place. But otherwise the clothes are outdated (although probably handmade) the Tchotchkes are nothing I really have to have and although I love Christmas ornaments I'm not in the market for them right now. Also, I don't know if the deli is still in operation, but I would have liked to see the cooler stock some kind of prepared foods or something, instead they use it for storing...stuff. What I really loved were a couple of things: The staff was super duper nice. Also, they have a "gift shop" in the back that was actually Mr. Davolls' house at one time, and it still had that feel when you walk in. In terms of other stores like this in the area, I think this is my least favorite, however, if you have never been to a store like this, you really should stop in.
