First off, this place is in a beautiful location. Weather your waiting for your food or just checking out the property. I recommend taking a wee stroll around the garden just outside the building. They did a great job revamping the business located inside. The new Ansel Gurney café offers yummy eats and beautiful views if you get the opportunity to sit out on the deck. I recommend getting one of the panini's!!! Also, they have a shop inside called Strawberry Moon which has all of the things you didnt know you needed but you most definitely need! Crystals, candles, plants, accessories, and so many smelly goods!! read more

I took my former wife and our Daughter - now a sixth grade graduate! - here for a post-graduation luncheon because my Daughter loves their tea service. What sixth grader loves a tea service? This guy's. We sat on the porch which was quite nice on that spring day. The waitress was lovely and helpful and appropriately enthusiastic about my Daughter's graduation. My Daughter loved her BLT (and tea), my former wife felt the same about her delicious seasonal spring salad (with some kind of delicious cheese in it), and I enjoyed my Reuben. Afterward, we toured the garden, which is lovely. If you want a quiet, civil meal with fresh ingredients made with care, maybe give this place a shot. read more

When I was in Massachusetts last fall, two different people (a family friend, and also the innkeeper at the B&B where I was staying) recommended the Ansel Gurney House. It is very quaint and does have a lot of charming rooms with unusual gift items in all price ranges (or just something for yourself that catches your eye). My favorite part of the House is the lunch. I feel like I am back in the 1950s when I was growing up, the decor is definitely midcentury modern, and the rear gardens are lovely. The chowder and soups are fantastic and made with fresh ingredients. You can tell that everything from the bread to the sandwich fillings to the garnishes and condiments is freshly made. And that Indian Pudding dessert, made with real molasses, has haunted me ever since I was there in September. I'll be back in the area for an extended stay this June, and you know I'll be here for lunch at least a few times. Seafood is what most come to the Cape for, but I come now for seafood and Ansel Gurney's delicious lunches! read more

I had been by this place so many times before I finally decided to stop in. It is so un-assuming. The first few times I visited the sandwich shop was closed or closing but I shopped in the gift shop and walked the gardens. Yah that part is nice but not for everybody. The food service part was GREAT. I had the turkey and will go back for it. It is not that spongey rubber stuff that all the other places have it is REAL TURKEY. The other stuff in and with the sandwiches was also real and handcut not the near foam tomatoes that come in some food service tray from a supply company. I thought the deserts were all so old fashioned, but man they are like mom or grandma would make, real home made stuff not factory food. read more

I have NEVER had a bad meal here, and I go weekly. This is a small restaurant with a small menu, but everything they make is homemade and incredibly fresh. Turkey sandwiches are made with turkey roasted on the premises - salads are unique and completely fresh - bread is homemade. Most importantly, they have the best chowder I've ever tasted, and it's only 4 bucks for a bowl the size of your head - PACKED with clams. I have no idea how this place makes money because everything is priced so reasonably. And AMAZING desserts. Bread pudding is the best, but they also have some unusual Yankee favorites like Indian pudding. The ambiance is cute - it's set in an 18th century house with a wood stove, and there is an awesome gift shop attached with lots of unusual stuff. Here's what you should get when you go to Ansel Gurney's: -A cup of chowder (served only on Sundays - other soups during the week are also great) -The Cranberry Festival turkey sandwich -The bread pudding (served with homemade whipped cream) Waitresses are also really nice. We come here often in the summer. Yesterday had the greek wrap and turkey salad croissant. The food is very flavorful here, the turkey salad had a unique hint of curry that was just delightful. They usually give you a bag of chips but today it was just a small handful on the side. The chocolate suisse is truly one of the best desserts I have ever had in my life. Ever. I don't like really dark bitter chocolate dessert and this is almost milk chocolatey. They also have a rhubarb crisp that is really yummy as well...great desserts! If I could give them one tip of advice it would be to have one more person on during lunch to bus tables. The servers are always sweet and pleasant, but yesterday we waited for a looooong time. The server was hustling but had 7-8 tables when we were there which is a lot to be able to provide great service. Regardless, we LOVE the food the shopping the garden, this places rocks! read more

I have been coming here with my family since I was a kid. My mother and my fiance also came here frequently throughout their childhoods. We have never had a bad experience when it comes to the gift shop. The shopkeepers have a wonderful eye for unique gifts, and there is ALWAYS something that I feel I need to have terribly! This is not the place to go for cheap junk and penny candy- it's not that kind of country store. You can tell that they spend a lot of time selecting the most beautiful, quality items for their store. Everything we have bought here remains a classic at our home whether its linens, German smokers, or Byers Choice Carolers, ornaments or home goods. The restaurant is very quaint and lovely. They almost always have delicious bread and herbed butter to taste, and their food is delicious. I would, however, suggest they add more vegetarian dishes to their menu... then I would eat here more often. They are pretty accommodating, though if you would like to try one of their sandwiches sans meat (they usually have sandwiches they they will make into a great panini for you!) you would probably be pretty happy you did! My mother actually threw my baby shower here a couple of weeks ago and it was lovely. We had some great food and had full access to the entire restaurant, which is actually larger than most people think. They even have a beautiful, very Tasha-Tudor/ Beatrix Potter-esque garden surrounding the back of the building. It was a great place to take pictures after the shower. I have many wonderful memories here, and I hope that they do not ever close, although they do seem to be doing well despite whatever is going on with "this economy," so "Yay!" read more
