2 pairs of Cowboy boots: I took in my favorite cowboy boots that had holes in the soles and whose soles were coming apart from the body of the boot. I should have noticed this, but they were so caked with dirt (ok and dried manure) I did not. Before I took them to Dawsons, I bought another pair (won't even tell you what I paid for them) but after wearing them once at the barn realized the heel was too high. I was leaving for a trip and begged to have them early despite the store's clearly visible posted time of response. Fast forward a few weeks. I miss the deadline due to flight delays, then I got sick. So basically, Dawsons put a rush on the job for me, which wasn't even necessary. He cleaned up my disgusting boots so he could repair them, made them look like new, and made the other boots wearable. When I sheepishly arrived late, the owners were gracious. I asked the people at French Laundry (best dry cleaners and alterations in Como, in case you are looking for one) for a recommendation for a shoe repair place. They sent me to Dawson's. The man who has helped me both times that I have been there is super friendly and informative. When I remarked that the heels of my boots always get worn down in the same place, he explained to me why that was. They do great work, just as good as my place in St. Louis, if not better. And Dawson's is so inexpensive! Every time that I pick up my boots I am shocked by how inexpensive their work is. I might just ship them all of my shoes to repair once I leave Como. I am so impressed by the work Bob Wood (owner...I think) did on 2 pairs of my boots. The heels were worn to death, the leather was ripping, and I thought both pairs were beyond repair. Not only were both pairs fixed to look better than when I originally bought them vintage, the leather was pristine and shined. The prices also surprised me -- in a good way. It was only $22 for 2 pairs, and I've paid upwards of $25 for only one pair, elsewhere. I have had many pairs of leather boots in all different styles repaired here and he always does a great job. He also always charges less than I expect. I just picked up a pair of cowgirl boots I dropped off last week and he not only restitched the soles (which I originally thought would have to be replaced), he also cleaned/conditioned and polished them for me (for free). I took some shoes that badly needed polishing to the shop. I was promptly and kindly greeted by a gentleman as I entered. He made conversation and said he could make my shoes look great. He quoted me the price which was very reasonable, less than expected in fact and gave me a ticket. He promised the shoes would be finished the next day by closing. Just prior to closing I entered the shop again to pick up my shoes, the same friendly gentleman greeted me and swiftly grabbed my shoes. Wow did they look great! I can't wait to wear them again. I started using Dawson's when I was in graduate school and Bob has extended the lifetime of my expensive heels many, many times. I even brought him some hand-sown, all leather shoes I bought in India, and he put soles that would prevent the hand stitching underneath from being torn up. After I left graduate school, I still mail him my repairs, as I have yet to find a cobbler I trust as much as Bob. I also sent my old boss i CoMo to him, after my boss' dog had torn his favorite leather travel bag to shreds. I took a new pair of creme colored wedges here that were filthy from being out the night before. Wanting to wear them to a wedding that coming up weekend, I had no idea if they would be able to be cleaned in time. These guys do a really amazing job when it comes to repairing shoes. I had bought a pair of sneakers sometimes back and they got torn a week after the purchase. I tried to return it to the seller but they claimed that they would only accept if I had the receipt. I decided to take the sneakers to these guys and they did an incredible job. read more

I took a pair of shoes in to be polished. I asked the price and was given a quote that was reasonable. However, as I was talking with the employee, I set my shoes down on the counter. Another employee then snapped at me to not put my shoes down. He was so rude that I am still shocked that he would act like that to a customer. This business is absolutely amazing. I took a pair of expensive boots in to get stretched, as they were too small, and now they work perfectly. Mr. Wood was working when I went in. He was extremely pleasant and very friendly. He understood what I needed done and had the boots ready within the week. Bob Wood's radiant smile alone would be enough for me to patronize this place, but he is also wonderfully skilled at shoe repair. I first went to him to put a patch on the toe of my favorite pair of Minnetonka moccasins back around 1983. At the time, his shop was on 9th Street and I remember that for years, he had a sign in his window for year that read, "Smile, God Loves You." Everyone knew the shoe repair shop by that sign (maybe even more than the actual name of the shop!) I still miss seeing Bob's Dad in the rear of the shop tinkering away on shoes and boots while Bob greeted customers at the counter. So glad that Bob decided to keep going with the business. This is a wonderful little place and you can feel good patronizing one of the longest-running family shoe repair shops in Columbia. read more
