My difficult frame requires that I alter about 80% of clothing that I purchase, so I have also gained a fair amount of experience with garment care, construction, repair, alteration and of course-- maintenance. Every time I move-- now 5 major cities in 10 years-- I spend a lot of time finding the best tailor in town. I have never found a more experienced, more professional, more talented seamstress and businesswoman than Lori Anne Gaddy. She is extraordinary. And Jeff Thompson, an associate at French Laundry, also rocks out. They are experienced, knowledgeable, efficient and honest. I now live 2.5 hours from Columbia, but I still make the trek to bring my more favored garments to Lori Anne. The French Laundry has no equal. Not even in a city 25 times the size of Columbia. A previous reviewer mentioned costs. Having visited a staggering number of different tailors over the years, I do not find the costs at French Laundry to be relatively high but even if they were-- it would be worth it. This place is great. They do perfect alterations and are a green dry cleaner. They are only a little bit more expensive than Tiger Cleaners, but their "green" process is way less harsh on your clothes than typical dry cleaning, so your clothes look better longer. Also, everything comes back well done. You will never get home to find broken buttons on your shirt or cardigan, of a press mark across a panel or pleat, that shouldn't be there. And they are nice! I took two dresses in to be altered. When I picked them up they were only able to alter one dress. The dress that was able to be altered was taken up at the straps and tapered through the under arm. I was charged $66.00 dollars for this minor alteration. The price charged was excessive for the work performed. I will not be back. read more

I want to start by saying I have a tremendous amount of tailoring done in a calendar year. I referee and umpire NCAA Football, Basketball and Baseball. The poly blend uniforms we all order from the same basic websites are cut like a square and are designed to fit the largest number of people, including some folks who are MUCH larger than I. In essence, the generous cut of these uniforms makes it an absolute necessity for me to have all of my shirts tapered, pants shortened in the rise, hemmed, tapered in the full leg and even the seat. Lori Ann took this on and had to rely on me describing the necessities of fit for what I do and why a tailored or military-type fit was essential to evoke the proper professionalism. Lori Ann is amazing. It wasn't always perfect the first time, but she insisted on redoing things until they met our joint vision of how the uniform should fit. This was especially challenging when tailoring an umpire uniform worn over the protective gear we use when calling balls and strikes crouched behind the catcher. Lori made it all happen quickly and exceeded my expectations. I have read several reviews where folks have commented that the staff seems short or even rude. These folks know their business and they are the experts. I am sure it is tiresome to have to listen to customers drone on about what they want done, when in reality, they really are not the expert. I was way to "hands on" and involved with contributing to the solutions at first. I could literally feel the Lori's irritation with me, so I got out of her way and began simply answering her questions. Maybe we should all let folks do their jobs. I know sometimes my expertise in a given area, gets me in trouble as I am more likely to share my knowledge and my opinion rather than letting the people who are more qualified provide the knowledge and service. Lori and her staff are great and professional people, just let them do their job. If they need information, they will call and ask for it. As for waiting a couple of days for a weeks worth of laundry, I am sure it didn't take that long, they are likely just backed up French Laundry is a blessing for Columbia and an asset to Collumbia's business community. read more

An excellent local business. Alterations are tricky business, and I've had quite a few alterations done in the past that I know I could have done better (and I don't sew!) That is not the case here. I had a suit jacket taken in at the waist, sleeves shortened, pants shortened, skirt waist taken in. They did this flawlessly and took the time to discuss options with me when I tried them on initially. I needed these done FAST (24ish hours) and they did them all by then. They are a TAD pricey, but for their turnaround time and quality it is worth it. The alterations are so seamless that you literally cannot tell the clothes have been altered in any way. Bounced around to a few alterations spots around Como before finding this gem. Needed a new suit altered, jacket brought in and pants hemmed, on a pretty tight deadline. Staff was great and flexible to how soon I needed it. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Suit fit like a glove and was ready a day early. Highly recommend. read more

Rarely do you receive smug service in Columbia, MO, but this place is definitely smug, bordering on rude. They tell you that your laundry will be ready Wednesday. They tell you "we will call you." (Actually, the rude man behind the counter yells that at you.) What they don't tell you is that they call you at 5:45pm (on one occasion) and not at all (on the second occasion.) Since it is 20 minutes from my house, the laundry is actually ready Thursday, not Wednesday. Why don't they just tell you that up front? Also, they are VERY expensive. I used to live in Manhattan, and a shirt there, laundered and folded, was $1.75. Here at the French Laundry, FOUR dollars. When you combine bad customer service with high prices... it is best to stay away. Buyer beware. read more

Just absolutely perfect service. We needed to get a set of draperies my mother had made over 30 years ago cleaned. Sentimentally, they are precious to us -- made of a red velvet brocade with a dangling beadwork trim. I first took them to different dry cleaners, but was unimpressed with THAT store. The place was dirty, the clerk was not knowledgeable, constantly warned me that they would not be responsible for any damage, and that all dry cleaners are the same and just "throw stuff into a machine." Then she capped it off with saying it would take two weeks! I picked up the drapes, left and took them across Providence Rd to The French Laundry. Talk about different ends of the same spectrum! The store is very clean and was tastefully decorated for Halloween. The woman who waited on us explained the process, never once mentioned anything about potential damage, and was extremely pleasant. The drapes were ready to be picked up in less than 24 hours and were just as beautiful as the day my departed mother first put them up. The French Laundry is my family's new dry cleaners! I am following up on my first review. I got the wedding pictures back and due to the fact that the dress wasn't altered correctly, my daughter's picture are way to risque. When I took the pictures in to show Laurie Ann, she is still blaming the bride...."she should have sat up taller, she should have pulled up her straps". I told her that we had it altered so she wouldn't have to pull up the straps all night and at this point all I was looking for was for her to be accountable. She couldn't do it....I most certainly won't be recommending this place to any of my friends for anything, but most certainly wedding dress alterations. read more

When it was not taken in enough to my liking in the first place, they wanted to charge me an additional $45 to further alter it even though I emphasized multiple times it needed to be extra snug to leave room for weight loss. This is the second time I've had alterations done at The French Laundry. The first time, they took care of a pair of jeans and a pair of pants. No problem. The second time, I brought in a suit. The guy who usually does my alterations said it would be best if I returned the suit, and got a different size, because he took pride in his work, and said it didn't fit me quite right, because I got a long instead of a regular. In a panic, I brought the correct size suit back on a Monday, and needed it by Thursday afternoon for a job interview. They took care of it on time, and it looked great. The employees are rude, including the owner Lori Anne Gaddy and concerned only with collecting their money. They are supposed to be green, but still does not explain the high prices. I gave a dress for dry cleaning, and was told it would be $20.00, then when I went to pick it up I was charged $35.00 stating they used their 'green' cleansers.
