I really hate to give a bad review to a small business, but Shane's Donuts was a disaster. It's not…read morethe employees (who were super welcoming and friendly), it's the product. Nobody wants depressing donuts, but that's what I got here. Up early and headed to nearby Dinosaur National Park, we thought why not treat ourselves to a box of donuts. I like to support small local businesses, and Shane's fit the bill. Tucked away in a plain Jane strip mall with no fancy sign or surroundings, I figured their donuts would speak for themselves. Well, the sure did -- and not in a good way. We couldn't make up our minds and opted for a 6 pack so we could take a bite of each and have a variety. The donuts on display looked really tasty, and the store already had a few old timers having their daily breakfast sweet. You could tell they were regulars and locals, this isn't a touristy place. We picked three different flavors of glazed donuts, then three different filled donuts. The donuts were good and tasted fresh and soft, but the oil was old and needed to be changed. That's always strike one when you bite into a donut. The glazes were good but overly sweet, and the yeasty dough was light and fluffy. What a shame the old oil ruined the flavor. I'm docking them two stars for this. What brings Shane's Donuts down to the dreaded one star rating is that ALL THREE OF THE FILLED DONUTS were completely empty of filling! No cream or jelly in ANY of them. I was doubly disappointed because we paid extra for the specialty "filled" donuts, but none of them had filling inside. I guess somebody messed up, but the staff needs to pay more attention to quality control. I paid extra for AIR! See photos of my sad, empty donuts. Since we had a full day planned at the national park, I couldn't turn around and complain or get the items replaced. By the time we got back to town, they had closed for the day, and we left early the next morning. I would avoid Shane's Donuts, or at least take a bite of the filled ones before you leave the parking lot. I am super disappointed, and I won't be returning to Shane's when I visit Vernal again.

I asked for a sampler dozen of their best and was extremely pleased! Though they don't showcase many of their cake donuts, they were by far the better - in my opinion. The timing didn't work out to get donuts that day, so I felt a tickle of urgency to get back. Fast forward to Friday morning, when the timing was perfect. It was a holiday weekend, and the place was packed, but we were not going to go without our donuts on the trip. Fully masked, we made our way in, where--due to COVID--they now have you line up to tell the attendant what you want. She gladly fills a box or bag and then hands it over for you to go pay. I should say that with a billion people running around in there, you want to be fast, not only to minimize contact but also because there are lots of people waiting and you don't want to be THAT PERSON that takes forever to decide. It was a chocolate sprinkle and a lemony thing with fresh strawberries and cream on top. That latter was the winner, but both were ordered simply as a backup as the fritters--the main stars--were already long sold out for the day. We managed to hold off for 25 minutes until we reached the trailhead, at which point we devoured them as our last real world food before heading out for a backpacking adventure. Oh sure, there are other things in the store. Drinks. Food. Snacks. And it's a gas station. But don't get distracted here--you're after the donuts.

First, it's a gas station... no problem but the donuts were average. The sales associate was not friendly, maybe having a bad day? They did not have what we wanted based on reviews and we were there between 6-630am. Since we were there and selection was slim we picked a donut that had apple or some fruit on top. Super sweet - it was an average donut - nothing special. Can't understand why the place was voted top donuts. Been there done that....

Their every day prices are typically a little higher than Walmart but their deals are great and are usually much cheaper than Walmart. And I must say that their produce department looks appealing which sometimes makes me want more than I came for. The pharmacy has a blood pressure machine which is great for the people dealing with issues that need one but don't want to go pay a doctor for. One of my favorite things about this Smiths are the smaller lines. I have been here many times when it was very busy but they always seem to have enough cashiers. And additionally during these busy times there is a person standing in the checkout area that directs people to shorter or open lines. Thats great customer service. Baggers have always been friendly. A few times I have seen cashiers talking with frequent customers like family. I love that. Gives me that small town feel. Today I saw a young gal pushing a long line of carts that she was having a hard time with but she was all smiles. All I can say is I enjoy shopping here and have never had regret. Keep it up! Here's an update. We called the bakery a few days ago to get 3 dozen donuts made for my sons class for his birthday. The donuts were ready at the time we needed them and they looked great. Thank you bakery!
