We visited on a Friday around 11:50am. It was super hot. The employees direct drivers to one of the four inspection lanes. We were being rushed by one of the employees. With only about six feet ahead of us, I'm not sure what his issue was. I felt bad for him since his uniform had long sleeves. It felt like half of the city was in line on a Friday morning. I was kind of dreading coming here because with many vehicle inspection stations/DMVs in other states that I've lived in can be hit or miss. Fortunately this place was a hit. I had to get my work vehicle inspected in order to complete the registration since vehicles that are going to be registered in DC have to show a specific decal in the windshield. Firstly, I think they have really great hours. I went today, a Thursday, since they opened at 7am. It might not be beneficial for someone who has to go to work but it worked for me. There hours change based on the time of year, so check the website before you go. I pulled into the vehicle inspection station (VIS) promptly at 7:05am. I was expecting a wait, but to my surprise there was none. Zero cars waiting. They have about eight drive thru bays to inspect cars and once you pull around the back, the workers ask if it's commercial or personal and send you to one of the eight bays. I pulled right in and the workers told me to walk around the front and wait. Basically there are two stations. One worker hooks your vehicle up to a machine to check the specs and then your vehicle is driven forward to be weighed and other aspects tested. I think they check to see if your windows go up and down, what your emissions are like, and if your brakes work among other things. The whole process literally only took 4 minutes. I was shocked! The worker in the last station passed me a sheet of paper and I passed the inspection. What a nice experience and there apparently was no reason for my initial dread especially since my work vehicle is in impeccable shape. read more

The gentlemen were nice and patient working with me, possibly because I was very big and pregnant but I imagine it wouldn't be much different if I weren't. Usually a quick and easy process. I think the fact that they are just a service station and doesn't handle any other transactions, especially involving money makes it all a breeze. There is online scheduling, but I've had decent experiences with an appointment or not. Now the kicker is to figure out their schedule and fees. I arrived on a Saturday at 2pm when the sign says it's open. There was an additional sign that said "CLOSED FOR HOLIDAY". I found out from someone else that they will close on Saturday if Monday is a holiday. I was told this was on the website (I didn't check), but dealing with DC, you have to cross check everything, twice, even three times. Any time you pull through the station, IF YOUR CAR DOESN'T PASS INSPECTION you are accessed a $35 fee. Beware of trips there for inspection sticker extensions. Every 20 days you are late for your inspection, you are accessed a $20 fee. There are more finicky conditions that you should be aware of the first time you don't pass. They will hit you over the head with your transactions and fees when you have passed and will be ready to renew registration. February 2016, the station is still under construction so your experience will be an outdoor one, no bathrooms, but port o potties if needed. THE STAFF IS FRIENDLY. Ok, so the key is to come on off hours on a weekday. Not always possible, but if you can do it you'll be in and out in no time! I came on a Thursday at 11:30 am and was out in TEN MINUTES. I had been putting off a trip here and couldn't believe how efficient the whole trip was. Super friendly staff, too. If you want to come before work hours be prepared to come early to get in line. My husband got his car done a few weeks ago and got there early enough that he was third in line but by opening time there were probably 20-30 cars waiting behind him. Went to the DC Vehicle Inspection Station during the time they stated on the website to go (Thursday and Friday in the early afternoon). I drove into the station and waited for about 30 seconds. I just had to wait ten feet away while they went through the inspection. I've been here in the morning and the line does form around the block at times or the driveways are packed full. I don't know what they've done to improve the station in the last few years, but this process is incredibly easy now. I remember the days of waiting in line at 6am. My new car didn't pass inspection; I called and the folks were extremely helpful in communicating why (I needed to take it for a long ride because it was serviced that week). I would like to recognize Reggie Taylor and Edward Tate for their exceptional customer service the other day. I had been at the DMV to get new license plates as I had just moved into the city, and it was discovered by James, the parking attendant at the DMV that one of the screws on my license plate was stripped and therefore would not come off of the car. James went with me to the DC vehicle inspection station where Reggie and Edward got right to work on my car to remove the screw. Using their electric tools, they ensured that they removed the screw without damage to my car and then affixed my new license plates to my car. This is completely out of the scope of their job duties, and I really appreciated their customer service because this is not something I would have been able to take care of on my own. I suggest setting up an online appointment, but it seems there are also hours where they're not busy. Across three visits from 2010-2015 Visit 1: Came middle of day and had a 10-15 min wait Visit 2: Wait was ~1hr at 7:30AM on a Sat morning. Sucks I woke up early just to wait in a huge line. Visit 3: Made an online appointment for Thurs 8:15am. It wasn't needed though since there was no line when I arrived. The process for passenger cars here is about as quick and easy as it gets. No forms to fill out, very short lines, and courteous staff. Literally all you have to do is drive up, hand them your keys, walk the length of the building while they test your car, and they'll probably be done by the time you get to the other side. You don't even have to pay here--if you pass, they just give you a sticker and a receipt you submit when you do your registration at the DMV, and your inspection fee is added to your payment there. I moved from another state, and the entire DMV process here is fast, easy, and relatively stress-free. I would definitely suggest doing the inspection before anything else, since you can't get DC plates without it, and you can get your license and plates in the same trip later. FYI: for personal vehicles all they test for is emissions, so you don't have to worry about mechanical things like you do in other states. I actually had a headlight out when I went and they didn't say anything. read more

Depending on the day, and time you go. Remember it is the DMV, and no matter where you go, in what state you go, they are always a cranky bunch. DC now, you only get your emissions inspected, not saftey inspected, unless you are a commercial vehicle. Check online for the times they are open, as they are open odd times, more so in the summer, when it is HOT. I have found if you go towards the end of their day, which might be early in the afternoon, you tend to get thorugh the fastest. read more

New to DC, from the blessed State of Florida where (like pretty much the whole South) we do not have vehicle inspections, this was my first ever vehicle inspection of any kind. It was effortless, despite being unsure about a couple of things. I decided to do this BEFORE visiting DMV to get my license and tag, so I rolled up to this location at about 8am on a morning just before the Christmas Holiday. Coming off of L Street (I missed I street where my GPS told me to turn) the appointment line was to the left (south) and the line I needed to go to without an appointment was to the north. I turned in a was approached by an employee who directed me to a lane and assured me my Florida tag was not a problem. I pulled into the lane where another employee to me to put the car in park and directed me to the waiting area. There are windows and a long hallway much line an old-fashioned car wash so I watched as they rolled my car up to the testing stations. By the time I got to the front of the building the car was done. I waited around for a minute not sure if I got paperwork from inside, and then they explained there's no paperwork you need to pick up inside. I walked out to my car, got a piece of paper from the worker, got in my park, took off the parking brake, and off I went. It was a very simple process, for which I will be paying $35 when I visit the DMV proper. I was very pleased when my car was inspected today. Personnel were very kind and helpful. I have a bad limp and when the inspector, whose name wa Rod, saw how difficult it was for me to walk, he invited me to sit in the back seat of the car rather than walk all the way around the outside of the building, which would have been very difficult for me. also, it only took about a half hour, which includes waiting for two cars in frony of me in line, to go through the inspection.
