Kudos to the money losing USPS (loses of $9B annually) for finally getting tough with Amazon. It seems the Post Office is tired of delivering Amazon packages 'the last mile" at a contract rate significantly below their cost. While I'm no fan of the bloat and bureaucracy at the USPS (I blame Congress who treats the USPS like a jobs program and never wants to dial anything back) it's nice to see that they're willing to walk from Amazon who seems to desire renewing their delivery contract at virtually no increase. First, the employees consistently appear angry and are often on their phones while assisting customers. The staff member who handles passports, Cherry, was unprofessional and rude without any clear reason. The gentleman at the first window frequently remained on his phone even while attending to customers. I would not recommend this location if you are looking for quick or courteous service. Additionally, the building is in poor condition, with missing light bulbs in several fixtures, which further reflects a lack of attention to customer experience. read more

I have seen a lot of post offices and scenes at post offices in my time, but this one has definitely left an impression on me. This branch is closest to my office and I frequently visit for my postal needs and to obtain money orders. I have been here multiple times since I started work down here and I can say that this is...different. The post office itself is grand. Probably one of the most grand I have been in for some time. It has that hollow feel to it that when you talk, there will be an echo. It is beautiful and at the same time feeling like it is in need of some loving. It feels unattended to, but that could be because of how vast the space is. Along with mailing letters/packages, money orders, and buying stamps, you can get yourself a post office box at this location and you can directly connect to the Smithsonian's Postal Museum (which you need to visit if you have the time). Now, for the reason that this has left an impression on me, it's the interaction with the space. Each time I visit, I have to guess which door from the street is actually unlocked to enter. Every single time it is a different door of the three. Speaking of outside, you have to make sure to step over the trash that is just left there by the unhoused and those waiting for the bus at the nearby bus stop. There is a ramp and a small set of steps to the door, but don't be jumpy if you happen to come about on a person that might be sitting, hidden, on the staircase off to the right of the door. Inside, watch your step as well. Just this week on my visit, after figuring out which door to use (left door) I stepped in and immediately stepped in something sticky. I did not have the state of mind to even think about what it might be. On another visit I really had to watch my step. Once through the front door you walk through what is a foyer to the doors of the post office. When I went that way there was a man asleep on the floor right in front of the doors. At least I think he was asleep, he could have passed out, or who knows why he was there. The staff, depending on the day, are somewhat nice to deal with. My visits somehow I got a decent customer service experience. If it wasn't for needed money orders or stamps every so often, I probably wouldn't utilize this location. I know I can buy stamps elsewhere, and money orders, at least within walking distance of my office, are hard to find. read more

The Post Office provides decent to good service for Post Office boxes and lobby service. However the lobby, despite its grandeur as part of the Smithsonian Postal Museum structure, is not well-maintained. They have had some homeless people hanging out during the day, and one time one bashed a hole in the wall. The repair seemed like a home-done job, even worse than I could do. This location is often mistaken for the one at Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Ave NE, but that station is keeping odd hours or temporarily closed due to cut backs. I liked the 50 Mass Ave NE because the gals there were professional and not partial to anybody. The guys at the 2 Massachusetts Ave NE (Dorothy Heights), they used to like to play Motown, which I like also, but then they started playing HipHop, and that's culturally brainwashing music, imho. I did see some corresponding results, like this one person, he was making jokes at me at my expense to get some laughs out of some of his ilk. Then this other person, who I normally admire, he's responsible for both stations practically, today he was saying, "N-gga Pride!" to a group, and they were like "N-gga Pride!" back at him. Come on! Seriously. If any other group said something like that, they would be like, a special card in the deck is being played. How about American Pride? How about Country Pride? How about We the People Pride? How about Human Being Pride? Anyway, it's pretty much like factory work, and the solution is NOT the solution the conservatives would have. They need to spend more money to 1) upgrade the building premises without shutting it down---they can do this like they do in Philly train station; 2) repair the PO Boxes with broken panes; 3) invite people to visit the Museum, give them discounts to shop and spend time there; 4) develop a policy for how to deal with the vagrants, such as redirect them to a better place to loiter, such as Union Station or the library or the Day Shelter at NY Presbyterian church. Just don't tolerate them just because they are the same race or you think you are being "nice." "Nice" to them is not exactly a favor for the customers and in fact it gives them a bad impression or even bad experience, since the free association has to include their guilt-tripping you for money, for food, for allowing them to stay inside all day, and guilt-tripping the postal workers, making them feel as if the Others are all Responsible for what happened to these characters to cause their present condition. We are NOT collectively responsible for THEIR condition, but we may be partially responsible for THIS COUNTRY's condition. Big difference! read more

Taxpayers last month bailed the United States Postal Service to the tune of 75 billion! Does anyone believe that services will improve? I see more commercials that's for sure. My recent experience with USPS HQ was finding a lost package mailed 2 Day priority after two weeks of being stalled in the same location. The local branch in Virginia Beach mostly threw up their hands for weeks saying there was nothing they could do. Until finally a branch staff person at the main post office said to file a lost package claim. The staffer provided methods to file. The process was pretty easy online. It can also be done by calling during hours. It tool around 15 minutes to put in the very detailed information. An email was immediately generated with a case number. The package contained sensitive documents so this was troubling and extremely annoying to occur. Within 12 hours the package was located and pushed out of a facility in TN to its final destination Florida. Within 48 hours the package was delivered somewhat crumpled, but the documents were intact. The letter was 17 days late. This was a major relief and I was grateful that the lost claim mechanism for USPS worked as it was suppose to. However I should have been advised to file a week prior. I called and called and called the automated system for updates and visits the local post office four times. 2.5 rounding up because ultimately what I'm reviewing is the claim process that did work. read more

The customer service representative came to let someone out and proceeded to berate those of us who had arrived 10 or more minutes before closing, telling us it wasn't his responsibility to assist us if we couldn't get here earlier in the day. Come to this location if you want your precious time wasted. So I went here early in the day thinking that it would be a quick and easy process to finish setting up the PO Box I already bought online earlier this week. Even though the attached picture(s) of a screenshot from several sources (the USPS website, USPS PO box paper application, USPS PO box online application) states that one "may also provide an additional acceptable primary form of identification as your acceptable secondary form of identification", the two gentleman employees at this location told me that because I did not have what was acceptable to them, I was not going to be able to finish setting up my PO Box. I asked for the manager; the manager was "out". It sounded like she was supposed to be there and had stepped out because they mentioned she'd be back by noon. I, unfortunately, did not have that much time to WAIT and be further inconvenienced. The two pieces of primary identification I presented were my U.S GOVERNMENT-issued U.S. Passport and DC-issued Driver's License. Both current. Both are photo IDs. One is "traceable to the bearer (prove your physical address)". Both are acceptable according to USPS, but not to these clearly competent USPS employees, I wonder why? read more

If I could give a 0 I would. I have never experienced customer service like this ever in my life. I have never been treated like this by anyone in any establisbment. The lady with the blonde low cut who works here has always given me a hard time! Today I wanted to ship off my package and she tried to bully me into either paying priority mail or purchase another label for my package or don't buy anything at all. She REFUSED to charge me for ground shipping unless I paid for another label. Her attitude was the WORST! You would have thought I did something to her or like she knew me. Everything was so unwarranted. I decided to report her so I asked for her name and she nastily explained to me that because I had a priority label, I couldn't do ground shipping. I told her that I have never had that issue with anyone or any location before. She told me she wasn't going to argue with me because I can't understand basic information. She then called me stupid multiple times in a row yelling at me as I continued to walk back outside before things escalated further. If you guys ever go here, avoids this lady! She claimed her last name to be Miller. She would never give me a first name (hopefully she wasn't lying about her name). This was absolutely the most horrifying experience I ever dealt with. read more

Now the young man who assisted me was as helpful as he could be but at the end of the day he was still UNHELPFUL. I came in at 9am to cash a money order and to my surprise USPS locations do not carry cash and the only cash that they receive is from the customers themselves. Based on this logic if you only have cash then you better have exact change or else you're in for trouble. So I ultimately wasted my time and wasn't able to cash my money order. When I asked him to verify if the money order was valid he wasted about 10 minutes of my time to find a number, which he ultimately didn't know which number on the order to put in the system. read more

Beautiful Post Office. The wait can be long-ish, but it's truly not the fault of the employees. A lot gubment folk come here with lofty demands and waste 40+ minutes behind the counter actin' a fool. Workers attitudes can be hit or miss and depend on the time of day. Panhandlers sometime creep in the lobby and ask for change since Union Station is only a stone's throw away. What is there not to like about a Post Office named after Richmond born Dorothy Irene Height. There aren't too many federal tributes to African American women and this one, right by Union Station is one of few. The thing that I love most about this post office is how old it is. It doesn't look nor feel raggedy but it looks unchanged by time. There are even hundreds of what appear to be mid-century P.O. Boxes. And today, I actually saw someone use one. Today I wasn't actually stopping by to drop a letter off. I buy my stamps online so I don't do that at the Post Office. I was in the massive hall trying to figure out where I should stand in line and I saw what I've never seen before. A self-service kiosk at a Post Office. Seeing that it was love at first sight. I was in and out con rapidez and back into the 60 degree first day of winter. p.d. As others mentioned, this is the only post office in the neighborhood that is open 7 days a week. What I really appreciate is the extended Saturday hours from 9AM-5PM because all the other nearby post offices close much earlier. There is no parking for this post office so it is best to walk through the entrance on North Capital Street. You can also go through the museum on First St NE and get the the post office via the basemen (longer route). When I go during the late afternoons, there is usually only one person servicing and there is always a line. We were trying to mail an international shipment and was told that we had to buy "white labels" for $.79 cent without any explanation. Apparently it was because we did not write the address on the envelope prior to giving it to weigh in. Pro Tips: Write the addresses on the envelope beforehand. Bring your own packaging tape. They do sell every mailing accessory you may need there but it will be extra $$. Using "first-class international" is always cheaper than using "priority mail" if you are shipping internationally--you will have to fill out a customs form prior to sending. If you have the weight of your package, it's easier to do everything online and print out your own shipping label to bring to the post office. read more

It was a little hard to find this post office. I came out of the Union Station and followed the sign. It was a little confusing because it is located around the corner. You may not spot it immediately but you just have to turn around the corner to find it. When I was here on a weekday morning, it was really empty. The staff who assisted me was the nicest post office staff ever! She was so nice that I could not believe it given my past USPS experience. The staff next to her, not so much. I just needed to buy a single stamp to mail out a letter and she was able to process that quickly for me. They do accept debit/credit cards as well. read more

This is a pretty great post office. I have never waited in a crazy line, even during the holidays, and the extended hours (open 7 days from at least 9-5) make it very convenient. I think a lot of people don't know it's there and use the one that's in Union Station, but this is way better. The automated machine is even usually working! Since I lived in Capitol Hill and frequented Union Station every day I had to go to this post office several times and I have to say each time was a good experience. People here are always helpful, attentive, nice, and want to make sure everything is done right. There really aren't any hints of annoyance, frustration or anger in the service you receive here despite the some times very long lines. This is one of the only post offices I've been that still actually looks like a post office AND that is open until mid night most nights. Not only is this post office open on Saturdays and Sundays until 5:00pm, but unlike other DC post offices, the people working there are friendly, courteous, and don't act like they hate their lives. One small drawback: there are no pens at any of the kiosks, so either bring your own or ask for one at the counter (I borrowed one, and they very firmly, but politely, told me to make sure I bring it back). The line went quickly, there were plenty of mailing materials, and the place was clean. Most DC post offices are absolutely atrocious, and should start taking some notes from this location. Last-chance to mail out your IRS tax returns -- this location is opened the latest in the city -- until 7pm on weekdays. The line is long on April 15, be prepared. I'm really sad that they've cut back on their hours drastically. It used to be open til midnight, then cut back to 9 pm, and now they close at 7 pm on weekdays. But, at least they're still open past 6 pm, and on weekends! Also, if all you need are stamps or to mail a package, the automated postal center in the post office is open til midnight. So that's still good. Just be careful if you need a particular box/envelope. I had to get a bit creative when there were no priority mail boxes to be found. Easily the best post office in the country, hands down. Open seven days a week, and that's not to mention how incredibly efficient the employees here are. It is unlike any other post office. It must be tried to be believed. The people here actually seem happy. As if they enjoy their jobs. Maybe it's because this is headquarters for them? Anyway, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If you live in DC, this is the post office to use. Any day of the week. EDIT: Not as good the third time around. I don't think anyone likes being yelled at or getting banished to the end of the line simply for asking for a piece of tape to close a package. Not cool at all. Also, it's not so cool when there are people in line, but no one is helping customers. Trying to figure out why this post office is so hit and miss. We wanted to get our wedding invitations hand sorted on a Saturday afternoon and it was the only post office open in the city. There's plenty of parking on the weekend on G St next to the metro entrance, and there was no line! Quick and easy option! read more
