This place is a dump. No, seriously. It's literally a dump. Super easy drop off for just about everything you need to get rid of. Read the list of permitted materials on the website to make sure (I.e. no paint). When you pull up, the guy directs you where to go based off what you're tossing out, then it's just park, toss it, and drive away. Very easy and convenient. read more

The Fort Totten Trash Transfer Station is the largest dumpsite run by the city. It's located in NE D.C. near Catholic University alongside railroad tracks. The station itself is large and from my opinion, efficiently run. Despite lines, they get you in and out quickly. One of the managers, Jose, was very helpful and friendly. One thing to note is that they don't take dirt or cement blocks. They also take and give compost at this location. read more

I'm yelping the dump. Yes. I am yelping the dump. No. I am NOT yelping the dump. Oh yes, I am yelping the dump. It would have been so corny to start off saying "This place is a dump." But it is. And it is a five star dump thank you. Like I go from dump to dump rating dumps. Actually this is my first dump. And it was not stinky or dirty at all. In fact, I drove up, unlocked my car doors, some very informative gentlemen took my old 13-inch cathode ray tube television out of my back seat and pointed me in the direction of the next stop: carboard recycling. Yep. I had the box my new flat screen TV came out of in the backseat as well. I pulled up to that station, some other men took the box and waved me on my merry way. Easy! Oh, and if you are following me on twitter, which of COURSE you are, you already know that the address #Yelp has for this dump is wrong. Let's talk trash...What a dump! But we are grateful to have it. You have to be a DC resident to use the facility. The afternoon hours are 1pm - 5pm during the week. You will wait in line until an employee motions you to pull ahead. As soon as a parking space is available, you pull forward. We were taking several large items and weren't questioned. The outside area is full of all sorts of trash. We had to exit a large warehouse that was full of paper trash and other items. The foul smell was overwhelming. If we ever return with more items, I would take a dot of vics vapor rub and put it under my nose. I would also wear a mask while driving through that last building to exit. The odor was overwhelming. This is a convenient facility to have. read more

Not every city will take your trash at a dump for free. It's nice to be able to take my bulk items here as well as materials for shredding during the first Saturday of the month. It's a great resource to have available to all DC residents. No need to weigh trash, just drive in, follow the attendants' directions, and dump away! read more

I never thought I would be reviewing a dump, but wow what a great experience! Went with a friend to drop off a old box spring and it couldn't have been easier. There was someone who met us just before to point us in the right direction. When we got in there were more staff members ready to assist. Dropped off the box spring and we were on our way! "To the dump, to the dump, to the dump dump dump!" My husband and I sing this little song once every other month or so. I'm not sure why it is that we accumulate so much oversized refuse, but in order to get rid of it we have to load up the pickup and take a trip to the dump. Okay, I do know why it is -- my husband likes to tinker and make stuff, and collects lots of crap with which to make it. Plus we do our own home remodelling, and this big stuff just keeps accumulating! So anyway, we go to the dump on Saturday mornings. It closes at 3 on Saturdays, so we try to get motivated early. Put on jeans, long sleeves, and tough shoes. Get your leather gloves. Pull junk out of the basement, toss it into the pickup. Toss more stuff in. Load in more of that giant branch that fell off the tree during the big storm six months ago. Grab some water and a snack, then head over to the dump. Sometimes you can breeze right up to the entrance and start unloading. Sometimes you get stuck in an hour-long line. Hence the water and snacks. FYI - you have to approach via Brookland Ave. The other direction is blocked off. The Fort Totten station has been under drastic revamping, so lately they've had a temporary dump site that is somewhat small. The giant pile of junk has to get shifted around frequently, but don't worry, the guy driving that humongous super scary bulldozer knows what he is doing. He won't hurt your car. I don't think. You can dump chemicals, oil, and computer stuff here, but be SURE to tell them what you have. Otherwise it gets commingled with the other stuff, and that's bad. BAD, I tell you. Last time we were here, we saw a motorized wheelchair recently placed on the pile. My husband eyed it, then he eyed me. I eyed him back. "Honey..." I say... "But it has really great motors and a controller -- perfect for robots!" "Okay! But just this once! We are NOT making a habit of bringing shit back from the dump!" For the record, he fixed the wheelchair motors and has been cruising around the backyard on the wheelchair frame, trying to figure out how to override the speed governor. I'm seeing another trip to the dump in our future.... read more

So...never did I think I'd write a review of a dump...but here I am, doing exactly that. My husband and I own an old townhouse (well, aren't they all old?) in the city and have done a lot of work done - both professionally and by ourselves. We've tried sneaking bits of construction stuff into our trash cans each week, but needed better disposal. Just a few days ago, we were told about the dump at Fort Totten - a place out by Catholic University that we had no idea existed. It is FREE and as long as you are dumping residential materials (this even includes plaster from our walls and concrete from our back patio), you are legit to dump. The dude at the entrance was so friendly. At about 11 this morning, there are half a dozen other cars there dumping their junk - plenty of room for everyone! Easy, convenient, and free. Omg, this place is such a dump. And I mean that in the best way. Actually, it looks too clean to be a dump. Hands down, this was the most pleasant city services experience I have ever had anywhere, and this includes my most recent 10-minute in/out DC DMV car inspection. I'm only speaking as to the recycling facility, not the actual dump. Before old televisions and computers and cell phones are probably shipped to China or Bangladesh for the really toxic dissembling process, Fort Totten Transfer Station accepts such items as politely, efficently, and conveniently as they can. We rolled up with our giant-ass 1995 Samsung television that makes all people purple and all food blue in the back seat of our car. We were helpfully guided by numerous friendly people to just the right spot, where more friendly people removed the television for us before my husband even had a chance to get out of the car. Then they thanked us! Nooooo, thank you! They also accept personal documents for bulk shredding on Saturdays and I plan to take advantage of this service soon. A couple things: You need to show your ID, probably to show residence in the District. The dump is actually at the end of John McCormack Road off of Michigan Ave., NE, sort of behind the Brookland/CUA Metro Station and Catholic University. John McCormick turns into Brookland Avenue, which turns into Bates, but it's pretty much all the same road. read more

This place does everything you expect a city dump to do. They take your bulk trash with a minimum of fuss (in fact they're way friendlier than you'd expect for people who literally work at a dump). You just drive in, they check it to make sure it's nothing prohibited (check their website for info), and then they direct you to a pile where you heave it on to the heap. The only catch with this place is that if you go looking for it by the address, 4900 Bates Rd NE, you will never, ever find it. You instead need to go to John McCormack Road NE, which intersects with Taylor St NE. Keeping that tip in mind will save you 20-30 minutes of driving around while your GPS proves itself utterly useless and you finally have to pull over and ask someone! read more

Oscar the Grouch was only in a perpetual bad mood because his trash can wasn't at the Fort Trotten Transfer Station. If he had relocated, he would have joined the ranks of the happiest group of government employees ever to have existed. This dump is open until 3pm on Saturday which already defies the "let's call 9am-3pm Tues-Thurs good enough for government work" stereotype and makes dropping off unwanted junk -- extra yard waste, documents for shredding, bulky unwanted items, you name it -- easy. Top that with employees strategically located to direct the flow of traffic and it also becomes the most efficient government program ever created. The icing on the cake is the employees who help take stuff from your car to the proper dumping grounds for you, with a smile on their face, nice small talk, and an genuine air of happiness in life and their careers. It's been like that every time I've come here; it's not the exception, it's the rule. Some individuals who own condos have complained that the "apartment" delegation on their District-issued IDs have had them turned away. Though I'm sure every employee would regret not being able to help one of their fellow District landowners, I bet they'd let folks in who had a deed with the address on it. Just a thought. Oh, and for anyone concerned, as long as you have the ID it doesn't matter what plate are on your car. Guess they realize a lot of land owning DCers don't own cars and will be renting/borrowing to bring stuff in. Government common sense, this is unheard of! ...now if only my government Agency could be so happy, efficient and have common sense. read more

Not sure the standard for rating dumps on a 5 star scale, but this place was a lifesaver for me. I had been trying to find some place to get rid of some junk I couldn't put in the trash (large wooden ties, gravel and chunks of cement) and every service i found wanted a few hundred bucks. Instead I loaded it in the car and came here. There's a guy when you drive up who you tell what you're dumping and he asks for ID (must be DC). Then you drive into the lot and you'll see just a giant pile of junk. Back your car up and toss it on the pile. There's a guy in there that sorta pays attention, but I really don't think they'd stop you from dumping stuff. The DC site says theres things you can't bring, but I didn't really see anyone enforcing much. Again, it's literally just a big pile. I'd recommend anyone give this a shot before paying someone. I try to go here to shred paper and it's a pain when they ask for DC ID. I don't have a DC drivers license but plenty of paper evidence that I live in DC since I'm trying to destroy these documents! For better customer service: They need to do a better job in using common sense to evaluate if someone lives in DC by looking at the papers someone has to destroy and with a general picture ID. This experience can be worse than a TSA checkpoint. read more

I agree, this is without a doubt a first class DUMP!! However, I recently ran into a problem... I was told by the facility staff that I was no longer able to use the dump as my DC drivers license identified my condo unit as "Apt 3A". I was told that because I lived in an apartment and didn't own my property that I would not be allowed to use the facility. The DPW website states that I must be a resident, not a property owner for the right to use the station. In short: My CM, Jim Graham was able to clear up the confusion, the policy is that any DC resident can use Fort Totten Transfer Station for Household Hazardous Waste (e-cycling or shredding) and/or to dump bulk trash. If you are doing self serve you can use the facility, as per William Howland, the Director of the Department of Public Works. I went here Saturday the 2nd to drop off a TV, lightbulbs, batteries and two huge boxes of documents to be shredded. They have it set up as stations, so you drive up to each one and they take the particular items that they process out of your vehicle. Awesome! read more

Pros: Nice employees Will take anything. No question asked. Cons: Not the safest or most organized place. Not accessible by public transportation. Nearly impossible to find. It is located on John McCormack Drive, which is not a major or well-known street. A few signs on nearby streets would be helpful for those unfamiliar with the neighborhood. No signs telling you where to go when you arrive or where to go after you deposit your trash. I tried to leave the way I entered. When I was halfway between the massive trash heap and the entrance, an employee ran over and stopped me. He told me that I could not leave the way I entered but would not let me turn my rental car around. Instead he made me back up through a narrow passageway with concrete walls on both sides. Since I work Saturdays I can't do drop offs those days so when I called 311 and asked about this they said I could drop off stuff the first Thursday of the month, between 1-5pm. So, twice, over the past 4 months, I've been able to take some JUNK there (analog tv, paint cans, useless broken appliances, other) and just drive in and pass it over to the recycling guys or put it in bins (if the site is unattended which occurred one time). There is a helpful guy at the gate who directs you and occasionally seems to want to see your ID to verify you really are a DC resident. read more

Turns out if you live in an condo or apartment in DC you are not allowed to use the Fort Totten Transfer station. I own a condo and when they refused me entry with my car full of trash I was pretty damn pissed. I pay taxes - a lot of taxes - this is some bullshit. read more
