Oysters
Steve S.

Outstanding neighborhood restaurant near the Amstel. I dined solo in my last night in Amsterdam and had superior service at the bar. I started with three oysters in the half shell that came with a spicy Thai sauce. I normally don't use anything on my oysters, but this was superb. I asked the bartender recommended the cod. It was served with garbanzo beans and amazing. I finished it off with delicious sticky toffee pudding.

A sunny terrace with a cycling path in the middle, and a amstelriverview.

Whenever I cycle on leidseplein and rembrandtplein, it always amazes me how many tourist sit on these terraces. If I have visitors, I surely will offer them a view of a sunset over the Amstelriver and beautiful canalhouses. The ijsbreker is a one of the best location for this that is open to the public. It is known for one of the 10 nicest outdoor terraces in Amsterdam. Overall Impressions: - Good place to meet for business meetings and -drinks. Friday and thursday are very popular. - Terrace is very crowded on sunny days. There may be a queue. - Service is at Dutch standard - Food is ok. However, some of my friends are addicted to their "lemon cake". - Wine selection is good.

There was a review on this place that described it as: "the place where young doctors hang out". Perfect! Could not have said it in a better way. If you want to go to a discreet but affluent place, look no further. I got the feeling that if you're a nurse, they will all look down upon you over there :\ The staff was friendly enough (unlike other experiences here apparently) and the waitress even tried to practice her french with me. I don't know if she thinking I was french was meant as a positive or negative remark, so I took it as I take my food: suspiciously.. This can actually be a nice spot to get some work done if you find that the more common options for that in Amsterdam are too crowded. As for the space itself, check the pictures, you'll see it has a nice atmosphere, even a more reserved room at the back if you feel like having a private party or see your boss and want to hide from him. There's definitely a lot of sitting places outside, but they don't take reservations for that (or just made an exception in my case and said 'no'), so you'll have to be really lucky to get a place at such a premium location (right next to the Amstel). The food was great, but a special note to their fine wine selection. I am talking about the wine itself, because their menu listed some spanish wines as being from Portugal and a portuguese wine as being from Spain. You can clearly tell that Geography is not their strong suit, but this can be forgiven as you remind yourself that their main line of business is food.

Hot choc with whipped cream!

Great place for lunch, VriMiBo and to work on the terrace! This place is really popular during lunch time and especially when the sun is shining... Furthermore, when you enter the Ysbreeker, it is actually a big restaurant which is cozy, but trendy at the same time. The menu looks good where I have only tried some hot snacks, vongoles and salads/ sandwiches which are really good! The only thing is that during peak time the service is really really slow, so hope they will improve that soon. One of my favorites at this spot is the hot chocolate with whipped cream which is served in a huge glass! I also like the bitterballen there, even though it is a bit pricey for 4 pieces of bitterballen.

Saw several people working on their laptops. It didn't disturb the overall ambiance, but it's good to know!

I came because it was mentioned as one of Amsterdam's best terraces on awesomeamsterdam.com. And it is! Great view of the Amstel. Excellent spot to get some work done on your laptop too. Excellent service, loved the food. I had the Atlantic cod in lobster sauce and two glasses of wine (plus a cappuccino, I was working:) and the bill was 34.50 euro.

The terrace is pretty cozy or airy depending on the season, they have heating lamps and local Dutch vibes - you can order something and they will leave you alone for as much time as you want until you wave them down again, so it's great to hang out and read a book. The charcuterie plate was pretty decent. Good first date spot, since it's right in that not-too-cheap not-too-expensive price point, you know what I mean . I'd say it's convenient, nothing so special that you'd go out of your way, but not bad either!

As soon as we landed in Amsterdam we were on a mission to get some grub. We saw Brasserie Blazer,…read moreas it was near our apartment, so decided to check it out. The menu is simple with sandwiches, two different salads, a soup of the day and some light snacks. They also have some Dutch beer on tap. I ordered a local IPA, fries and the goat cheese and prosciutto grilled sandwich. After chatting and downing our beers, which emptied before our food came, we ordered another round and started to wonder about our food orders, especially since all of us got sandwiches. It doesn't take that long to make. Our table was also next to the kitchen so we could see that the chef was on his phone, not cooking, which was confusing. We ended up asking another server about this and she went over to the kitchen to check on our order. Turns out - the order never came through in the computer system to the kitchen, so she had to tell him our orders so he could start making it. By the time we got our orders we were starving (since we were traveling all morning!). My grilled sandwich had lots of goat cheese, which was yummy, but wish it had more of the prosciutto. Nothing special about the sandwich, but at least it was sustenance. Same with the fries. I was hoping for some good, thick fries to go with the side of mayo, but they were thin. Overall, Brasserie Blazer is not the best option for lunch in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam, but it was convenient for us.

Top Notch Breakfast and Dinner…read more.. Brasserie is the restaurant inside the Ambassade Hotel. My wife and I...along with another couple...had 4 breakfasts and 1 dinner there so this review reflects our experience. - Overall: 5 - Location: 5 (for Old Town and the Jordaan) - Exterior: 5 - Interior: 5 - Atmosphere: 5 - Menu: 5 - Food: 5 - Service: 5 (though the head waiter at dinner was full-of-himself) - Price and Value: 5 Pros: - Location: Convenient to the Old Town and Jordaan parts of Amsterdam. - Exterior: Handsome. A beautifully restored and maintained property. - Interior: Contemporary. Brasserie is a high end spot across 3 rooms, yet remains comfortable where conversation is easily accomplished. - Menu: Very healthy buffet at breakfast plus some items which can be ordered. Dinner offers French fare with a relatively light touch...though very different from the wellness-oriented breakfast. - Food: Excellent. The breakfast buffet is not huge, but full of healthy high quality items. I had 3 unbelievable versions of granola spooned from large jars and covered my bowl with the best tasting light Greek yogurt. Fruit and fish was super fresh...bread and pastries baked on premises amazing. Others in our group chose made-to-order egg dishes. It's all part of staying at the hotel. Dinner transformed Brasserie into a bistro with a French twist on many favorite dishes. Check the menu online. Portions are small - as expected - but quality was high. However, prices were very reasonable with most items under $30. - Service: Homey at breakfast..."French" for dinner. Everyone could not have been more friendly and helpful in the morning. Things were a bit more formal at night with a different crew. The chief waiter was very knowledgeable, but we agreed a bit arrogant. - Price and Value: Worth it. I believe the breakfast buffet is only for guests of the Ambassade Hotel. Brasserie is open to the public at night and quite reasonable. - Parking: None. Who has a car in Old Town? Cons: - The only one readily apparent was the brusque, off-the-cuff nature of our main server at dinner. He wasn't over-the-top, but not in keeping with the friendly vibe of the hotel. And that's coming from 2 couples who grew up in New York City and lived for many years in San Francisco and LA. Anyone can...and should...get dinner at Brasserie. There are many reasons to make reservations for a stay at the Ambassade - including access to their breakfast buffet.

What?? - rock hard bread I wouldn't feed a dog and plastic container butter - lackluster oysters - steak frites came out just about raw (1.5 hours after ordering). Had to send back. Came back with no sauce on top, no mayo for fries - red bass decent - server/waiter said it "wasn't his fault" and "the system didn't take our order". No empathy, no anything. - the most appalling part. Offered us a free drink or a coffee. WHAT?? Didn't comp the martinis, didn't comp the awful steak frites, or anything.
