See first review. Two years later and I love this place as much as ever. Their lattes are delicious and their homemade sodas can quench any thirst.

I absolutely love Café Brecht. It's one of my favorites in the entire city. It's completely different from any other café in Amsterdam, it really has its own character. It's a typical Berlin café with mismatched sofas, tables, and table lamps spread everywhere without any particular order or organization. It just looks so warm and cosy!! It's a place to meet up with your friends to chitchat, slouched in a couch, grab a bite to eat. In terms of drinks, the menu offers of course beers, including german beers on tap. Don't even try the wine, it's terrible. Rather have a look at the cocktails, they have some nice things to offer in that department. They also have nice snacks, and lunches. The only problem is... it can get really difficult to get a spot!

This place has personality! From the decor to the seating to the drinks, everything is so interesting. It really does feel like you are in someone's living room. I completely understand why people love it! Menus are in Dutch and English, so there's not much to worry about there. They don't take credit cards here, but they do take pin and cash. And there are seats outside for when it is a beautiful day!

Ok so I get that it's meant to be a throwback, with really old furniture and it is sorta quaint. They do a good job of pushing the dated feel with ancient chairs, tables and pictures.......but....... It just all feels a bit manky. So imagine all the really worn, battered, smelly, dusty stuff that's left at the end of a car boot or jumble sale. That is what this place is full of. It's literally quite manky. Some chairs seemed over 100 years old and it was like they had not been dusted in the same amount of time. For me this is a novelty pub. You would go once, but you would not go back. Plus points. They to a couple of nice IPA's and the staff were friendly. Negatives, the furniture, the decor, the dust. The weird haphazard layout. I like quirky, but this was just a bit to fusty and run down.

Cafe Brecht is the ideal place for a cosy coffee with cake or after work / weekend drink. The décor is homely, with low set couches and chairs tightly gathered around small tables. The walls look like they are from a retro living room, with interestingly patterned wallpaper lit up by low-light lampshades throughout. The food is good, although you are limited in options. However, they have a great array of beers and wines and are the ideal place for a chilled out drink and chat. The current owner is really lovely and has been working on creating an amazing vibe for the past five years. I'll definitely be going back to soak up unique music and atmoshphere again sono.

Nice atmosphere, lots of German beers, and close to the Rijksmuseum without being overrun by tourists.

He said water, so I assumed it was it was tinted from the lighting. When I took a sip it was a flavored water. I asked if it was gluten-free and he was very rude in his response. Basically was like um yea it just has spices in it. Spices may not be gluten free and could be of concern for a celiac. I asked him if any drinks were gluten free and he said all but 2. I wasn't confident that the drinks would be made separately from the non- gluten drinks so I opted not to get one. My friend got the bees knees and said it was really tasty. The server did come back and switch my water to regular at the end but he should have been upfront with what he gave to prevent any exposure to peoples allergies.

The space is really cool, with some neat lit-up signs behind the bar and antique paintings on the ceiling. I tried a few cocktails and they were all tasty. These included the Flying Dutchmen -- their signature cocktail -- and the Umami Margarita. I was a bit hesitant about the Dutchmen because it was with gin and orange, but I liked it a lot. The margarita was unusual with some mushroom dust on the rim. Our server was very friendly and helpful.

Thanks to Iago from NJoy, we heard about this soeakeasy and decided to check it out. Reservations…read morerecommended. Carlota who answered the doorbell, was able to accommodate us at the bar (our preferred seating anyway). She took our coats, placed them in the coat closet up front and led us inside. Once seated, we were given gorgeous ruby red complimentary aperitif (hibiscus, honey, ginger). The drink menu is interesting, based on the concept of growing up, with more basic tastes to start and more mature complex tastes later on in life. (The drinks are more complex the later in the menu). I ordered the Awake at Last, and my husband ordered the Ruby Stone. Mine was sweet and coffee flavored and his was more tart and sour cherry flavored. When I tried his drink, I immediately felt nostalgic because it reminded me of umeboshi (pickled plum in Japanese food), so we ended up trading drinks. Both were great for supping. Sitting at the bar was fun, watching the bartender at his work. He was silent, focused, skilled, professional. So glad we checked it out! I didn't post pictures of the entrance or inside because I'll leave it to you to discover! (The fun of a speakeasy).
