I'm a little skeptical of all of those places along the river because I get tourist trip vibes BUT this place, much to my surprise, had pretty good reviews for their waffles and seemed like a good bet to satisfy our waffle craving after dinner during our trip. It is super cozy at night with the blankets, heat lamps, and literally fires they have going on their patio. The light is dim and sets the mood. We tried to order the mulled wine but the server apologized that it was a winter beverage and they have yet to remove it from the cart. Instead, he recommended their hot chocolate with rum and you already know we weren't going to turn that down. We also ordered the waffle that inspired our visit in the place. They have plenty of topping options including ice cream, whipped cream, fruit, and other dessert-like things. I was put on the spot and blurted out caramel and ice cream. Maybe caramel ice cream. Maybe caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. I can't be sure. The hot chocolate was piping hot and warmed our soul. The waffle was beautiful and a work of art. They kindly wrote "Ghent" in chocolate sauce on the plate which was such a nice touch. There was a heaping scoop of ice cream and caramel sauce. The waffle was, and I may be full of shit here, but "Brussels" style, but I'm pretty sure I remember reading that. It was square. The outside was SO CRISP and the inside was still warm. It was just what we needed. It was also reasonably priced if I remember correctly. The person i had the misfortune of sitting next to was an absolute dick which kinda put a damper on the evening but it couldn't have been better from De Zwarte Zee's standpoint. read more

I sat outside on a somewhat chilly day, but it's very cozy there and they have blankets and pillows. My server was very knowledgeable about the different kinds of beer and I enjoyed them both. I also had pasta and bread that was good. read more

Highly recommend this cafe! I got the pesto, mozzarella, and ham (prosciutto) and it was fantastic! The pesto is very fresh and the sandwich is delicious. We all liked our food & there's many lovely tables outside. read more

Delicious iced coffee with caramel. So-so spaghetti bolognese - very cheesy once you mix the cheese into the hot pasta and lots of vegetables (if you like that sort of thing) but could use more meat and a little more flavor to the sauce. read more

Just arrived in Ghent @9:45 every other restaurant turned us away except this little gem at the end of the row of restaurants and we are Sooooo happy the other restaurants turned us away!!! The bruschetta was amazing, and all of our dinners were soooo de-Lish!!! Quick service and good drinks. Waiter was prompt and very kind. Payed a bit more for the experience here since the patio is right on the canal in the center of the city. Have a small selection of food as well, but again, at higher prices. Coffee was good, and the crackers that accompanied my beer here were of a higher quality than I've received in other bars in Ghent, so that was a small plus. read more

Like most places I have visited, there are so many nice looking restaurants and so little time to actually try all of them (even if some simply involve sitting down and having a coffee). Fortunately you can check out the menu, and the prices, and this place certainly didn't seem to be too expensive, and the options available were all that bad either. As usually, I ended up having the Flemish Stew while my brother had the quiche. Both of them came with a salad. Also, as I have come to expect, the stew was pretty decent as well, and my brother didn't have any complaints with the quiche (not that he actually complains). It is a reasonable location, though it is set a little back from the canal, but it is in the heart of the old city so it does offer reasonable views. Nice, and not too expensive, and the food came out at a reasonable time as well (unlike some that won't be named at the moment). read more

This place is right in the center of old town & overlooking one of the many canals. My Mom & I went in for lunch, after reading some of the good reviews. This place is really really small on the inside so we were lucky to get a table. I had the chile con carne that I really enjoyed & my Mom had the fish soup, which she said was delicious. They also served bread with our lunch. The service was great. I have no complaint & I would definitely recommend coming here for lunch. read more
