Went for second time (first in 2011) today. I rode a very sweet horse named Amber. I was terrified, but calmed down after we started on the trail. She was really good and calm. The trails were beautiful with all the leaves changing color and seemed nicely maintained. I ended up being near the last guide, who turned out to be the owner. I think Carla was her name. She was really friendly and told me a lot about the horses histories. My husband went and it was his first time on a horse and he loved it. I think his horse was named Hank. He said he was calm and good. He wasn't scared. My husband was near the front of the group and a big buck ran thru the trail & his horse didn't care. Great experience. read more

We bought my sister and her husband, both accomplished riders, a groupon for an hour trail ride--she hasn't ridden in a few years and we wanted to give her a treat. My sister called ahead and said that she has ridden for 20 years and would like a ride that was a challenge, or at least one that she could control. They told her that was fine. When my sister arrived, they put her on a horse that didn't follow any instructions aside from the pack leader. She was put in a group of kids and went on a ride that was so boring that she was able to text me from atop the horse during the ride. The teenager that led the ride talked to the teenager following in the rear the entire time, complaining about the job and how "stupid all of this" was. The only excitement was when they crossed a creek--the leader didn't warn the riders at all to prepare, and one child rider fell off. As soon, as they returned, the trail leaders walked away to go find food that was supposedly delivered, so my sister ended up explaining to the others how to put the horses up. This was such a waste of money. I wish I would have been informed when I made the reservation for extra $$, we could have a more personal ride more suited to our ability. read more

My daughter is staying at Deadbroke Farms for trackout camp. She's 9. I can't speak for the horseback riding experience but what I can say that my daughter is extremely happy with the camp. She didn't really have any experience with horses but loves animals in general so she has found a new passion. They've taught her horseback riding, grooming, basic veterinary care, etc... It seems she has a knack for it, too, so that contributes to the positive experience. I also think that the crowd must be smaller compared to the summer camp so that probably helps as well. Don't go expecting anything ritzy - the name says it all. It's really a modest family farm that depends largely on volunteers. Some people might comment on the state of the horses but I'd say it's generally good (although I'm definitely no expert). You also have to remember that they run a horse rescue as well. I can say that they do love and care for the horses. They have over 100 so there is a type of horse for everyone. They pair children with suitable horses, also. My daughter is having a great time with the staff. They take excellent care of her. I will mention that my daughter is pretty easy going and responsible. She doesn't require as much guidance. If you have a child that doesn't behave very well, certainly it would be a different experience as the guides also have to deal with the horses who each have different personalities. Carla was polite when I called and the staff was polite when I arrived. I think that sometimes direct people (as country folk tend to be) are perceived as rude. I'm just incredibly thankful for all the skills and knowledge they've shared with my daughter. I honestly like that she's dirty and stinky when I pick her up! It means she got outside and had fun. It beats her other trackout camps hands down. If you can handle "rough around the edges" then you may enjoy this place. read more

Communication was great leading up to the birthday party, but when we accidentally forgot to bring cash to pay, our contact person(jean) was rude and short with us the rest of the time. Amazing to see the owner and her staff care for the stunning horses and the patience they have for them. I read unfair reviews about the owner, but truth is that she is blunt, intolerant of slackers and she could sure use more help. I had the best experience celebrating my husband's birthday at Dead Broke Farm. The owner accommodated my last minute plans, the staff gave us great tips of how to handle the horses and all of our horses were healthy and well mannered. I should have read the reviews for this place before I gave them my hard-earned money. First off, they are EXTREMELY unorganized-- it took TWO HOURS of waiting to go on a 1-hour trail ride. While we were all waiting to be seated on our horses, volunteers took us around the farm and showed us the animals (chickens, turkey, rabbits, dogs). The rabbits were in such horrific conditions, I was appalled. Now, I understand animals on a farm aren't pampered like house animals. However, these rabbits were sitting in small, 2x3ft cages with a good inch of feces accumulated on the floor of the cage. One turkey had mangled, broken feet and was limping around its small cage. The employees or volunteers obviously had NO idea how to properly execute a trail ride. Once all of the riders were saddled on their respective horses, the volunteers led about 10 horses to two buckets of water to drink. This was so disorganized the horses were literally FIGHTING to get water. Anyone who knows how horses operate know that they must be organized when in close quarters, lest they fight and kick each other. Horses were facing EVERY direction, all in close quarters, until one girl's horse TOOK OFF towards the other horses and threw her off. A little girl, probably 7 or 8 years old was thrown off, too, and this was all in a matter of 5 minutes. The staff members and the owner are obviously incompetent, because this is NOT a business. This is a group of bum-fuck individuals profiting off of people's money, probably eating well while their animals suffer and their horses thirst. They weren't friendly, they didn't even bat an eyelash when two young girls were thrown from their horses, because the first thing they said when it happened was "Well you can't get your money back." SERIOUSLY? That's the first thing you say to a paying customer when they get thrown off a horse that is a good 17 hands tall? By the way, the tour guide who said that was missing some teeth. I'm not one to judge, but proper english and basic hygiene is a good indicator of what kind of experience you're going to have at a business. Don't even get me started on the owner. She literally approached the girl who got thrown off her horse and scolded her for letting the horse eat some grass, as if it was the girl's fault. read more

I visited Dead Broke Farm recently for a one hour trail ride with my twin sister. We wanted to do something memorable for our birthdays and had never ridden horses before. The staff at Dead Broke Farm were patient with us and incredibly warm people. It was a nice fall day and the farm was beautiful. We got a short lesson about mounting the horses, using the reins, etc., and a little while later we were on our way towards the trails guided by Carla Carlough. The horses were a pleasure to ride- I can only imagine how much training it takes to get horses ready to be calm and patient with complete strangers and beginner riders! It is clear that Carla knows everything there is to know about working with horses, and I felt completely safe out on a horse in the woods with her. She was kind and a joy to spend an hour talking and riding with. The trails themselves are well-maintained and a little slice of peace. All in all, I would (and already have!) recommended someone take a trip to Dead Broke Farms! The experiences was hassle-free, the staff are genuine and helpful, the grounds are expansive and gorgeous, and the horses are well-trained (or 'dead broke'). Thank you for a memorable birthday. My daughter loved her trail ride, and I'm glad she was too young to notice how poorly managed the farm was. The staff was unwelcoming and very unfriendly to their day-campers (except one very kind volunteer) and the horses didn't seem well cared for. Two horses took off running on the trail, one threw off its rider (a young girl) and the other ran all the way back to the barn while its rider hang on. This review is long overdue. We went to Dead Broke Farm when we visited NC during the July 4 holiday in 2013 for a one hour guided trail. We loved Molly and the girls. They did a great job teaching us how to get on the horses and guide them the right way. It was great hearing how they rescue the horses and raise them. Do not go horseback riding here! The staff is completely unprofessional with no regard for their customers' safety. They did not consider riders' experience when matching them with horses. This was my first time horseback riding yet they put me on a horse who wanted to RUN and wouldn't listen to my commands. Not that I have had much instruction on how to control the horse before the ride. They didn't even make sure I was fitted to the saddle properly before we left! I was not and had to switch horses with a friend partway through the ride so I could reach the stirrups. The last straw was when the owner Carla who was our guide yelled at me and the other riders when my horse needed to be separated. Apparently horses tend to kick each other if they're riding too close together! Carla should have told us about this at the beginning of the ride and should not have yelled at customers (some of whom were children) when she was giving conflicting instructions. I was also surprised that Carla would take a brand new horse (which bucked a lot) on a trail ride with a lot of inexperienced riders. But she still talked on the phone through most of the ride. read more

My 8 year old daughter attended camp at Dead Broke Farm this week and had an absolute BALL! She has learned so much about the care needed to keep a horse and even more about the proper was to handle and ride a horse. Miss Jean does a great job at making the kids feel welcomed and there are so many different activities for the kids to do. I am amazed at how much my child has learned and grown from this experience! Prior to attending the camp we went on a trail ride with a large group of people. We had three trail guides with us: Carla, Marisa, and Brooke. They were all so very helpful in assisting any needs anyone had. I saw Miss Carla at her finest when handling a rider that was not responsive to requests or happy with the initial horse. Miss Carla gave this rider her own horse to ride to keep the guest happy. In addition, because of this delay, our ride was extended! I loved how Miss Brooke took the time to teach everyone how to brush, saddle, and ride the horse. It was like we had our own private riding lessons. Dead Broke Farm is a welcome change of pace from the normal hustle and bustle. Its country right in our very own back yard and worth a visit! read more

Be sure to read the real comments about the farm. Anyone with any experience with large animals would recognize that this farm is not a farm but maybe one level up from a tourist trap. There is huge potential to turn this place into something really worth while considering its location and acreage available for riding. The owner is either ignorant or to lazy to make it into a nonprofit with a board of directors to facilitate use of funding constructively to organize volunteers and rehabilitation of horses and other large animals. On June 28, 2021, our party of 8 arrived on time for a one hour horseback ride on a rugged, narrow, muddy trail. The woman responsible for collecting the money for our ride kept asking where the money was! The person in our party with the money,(cash,) was about 10 minutes late. We assured her that the money was coming. We waited an hour to be mounted up. The help were all young teenage girls, and they had saddled the horses. We were about 55 minutes into our 1 hour ride when my saddle and I slipped off the horse and I hit the the ground hard! I'm a 75 year old woman and have riden many horses before. The teenager leading our party asked me if I could walk back! I said "no."...and she called for the woman to come get me with an ATV. There were no apologies or excuses or offer of a refund. Consequently, upon going to my Dr. and having X-rays; I had broken three ribs and my left shoulder blade. It took 6 weeks to heal and feel normal and out of pain. I would not recommend this facility. Teenage girls are not strong enough to make sure a saddle is on tight enough. There should be strong woman or men to provide safe saddling. read more

Was here for a child's birthday party and one of the girls attending was a little afraid of the horse and instead of helping her- she was yelling at her to the point she burst into tears and had to come back early. We went on a 2 hour private ride and the ride was great. Carla was our guide and we learned about her operation and overall had a great time. The trails ran through the rolling hills and stream beds. The weather was perfect and we had a perfect time. You don't need to show up early and the farm was not that busy on a Friday. Our horses were perfect and well mannered. Bring somethng to drink as they will give you a saddle bag to carry it in. If we are ever back in this area, we will return for another adventure. read more

I just came back from a great trail riding experience. My husband, myself and my 3 kids had a great time. Thanks to all the wonderful people at the farm who truly care so much for these animals. I truly feel like they do the best with what they have. I guess I appreciate it because I spent my younger years on a farm in Colombia,South America where we had just enough. I did not mind the dogs coming for the ride they actually made me feel safe. Maybe weird however our horses were definitely not spooked and the entire ride went off without any issues. Kids had a great time today. That's why we were there. The guides were awesome and extremely helpful. My son was a nervous wreck and tried every trick in the book (nausea..headache..tired...) to avoid riding today. "Art", one of our guides, really helped my son relax and did an awesome job getting everyone on their horses, down the trail, and back safely. The horses were well behaved and even a novice rider, like myself, was able to maneuver a large draft horse through some narrow points in the trail without a problem. Beautiful trail. We went with a Girl Scout troop to the farm as their big reward. I expected waiting maybe an hour because of getting training and helmets, but they didn't go out on the trail until 2 hours and 10 minutes after the appointment time, with no communication. My 9 year old daughter was looking forward to this for months and came home crying because of the guide/owner(?) Carla yelling at her. I'm giving this establishment a 3 because of the guide Courtney. She was amazing and helped make the experience fun for me. However, the owner, Carla was very unprofessional and didnt have patience for beginners. When I made the reservations I was told the farm gets beginners all the time and not to worry. Well, my 11yr old daughter was yelled at constantly, my son was too tall for the saddle but Carla didnt try to get one suitable for him and the horse she lead with was very aggressive. I am an experienced equestrian and had the worst horseback riding accident of my life at this establishment. Horseback riding can be dangerous, yes, but if you ride here, I need you to understand that many of these horses (through no fault of their own) are NOT ready to be ridden on the trail or even to be ridden at all. I had just been hired on as a trail guide for the summer, a job I was SO excited about. After several trial days and riding tests, Carla hired me on. Upon my first actual day of work, I was assigned to a horse that was brand new to the dead broke property and a relatively inexperienced trail horse. I'll spare the details of how it happened but the horse reared and lost his balance, falling backwards on top of me. I was pinned under the horse and he couldn't get up. As I wiggled my toes to make sure I could feel my legs, I called for help despite the wind being knocked out of me. For the most part, I was ok but the part that really got me was that the only kindness afterwards that I was shown was by a few other summer helpers who hosed off the mud that broke my fall. They dressed a few of my cuts and With permission, I left for home. Not once did I ever receive a call from Carla or anyone to make sure I was ok, or that I had made it home ok. Hindsight, I shouldn't have been driving. I am aware I signed a waiver and that horseback riding can be dangerous, but to have someone injured that badly on your property, on your horse, to not care to follow up on that? Bottom line, if you must go here, please please be careful and cautious as many of these horses need further training. Make sure you are wearing your helmet, mine probably saved my life. read more

I brought my family to Dead Broke Farm today so we could all ride together. It was my 6 year old's first ride ever. I relayed to the staff of my son's nervousness and they recommended that we come 30 mins early. The farm land is beautiful- woods, ravines, streams... a truly professional staff made sure every horse saddle was checked over multiple times. The horses were well tended to, shiny coats, happy. Lovely dogs escorted us through the woods chasing deer. You could really feel their joy. A truly glorious day. A huge thank you to the wonderful folks at DBF!! I scheduled a 2 hr. Private ride for just myself for Saturday at 12. I was visiting from NJ for the holiday weekend and was trying to escape from listening to a loud bunch of guys hosting a fantasy football draft going on at the house. Lol I am an experienced horse rider, own my own horse, and work as a wrangler at dude ranch as well. So I figured I would go out and take a nice ride during some of my downtime. I booked my ride the day before over the phone with Shirley with no issues. Being that I booked a private ride, there was a $40 deposit over the phone to reserve my time and a horse. She was nice enough to text me my reiciept. Check in was extremly quick and easy. I was greeted with all smiles from Jeff, Morgan, and Margo. (And one other young lady's name that escapes me at this moment) Their liability waver form is straight forward and offers for you to ride with, or, without a helment (at your own risk). Everyone had extremely calm and friendly demeanors. Which is crucial when your buisness involves - Horses - mixed with lots of beginner riders - possibly fearful, along with small children. Very welcoming and relaxed atmosphere! All the horses were well very kept and hay and water was plentiful. The saddles and tack for the horses were also in great shape. I was offered water and a saddle bag for my belongings before mounting up. (I declined, I didn't bring much with me other than money & myself) We were all given very informative riding demonstration by Margo on her horse before the ride to ensure that everyone actually got to SEE how to do the basics. (Stop, walk forward, turn left and right.) They take time with each rider to make sure you are comfortable & check your stirrups before un-clipping you and allowing you to go offer your horse a drink before heading out. Margo was my trail guide. She was absolutly delightful. She was very kind and very outgoing. We chatted, laughed the entire time and had an amazing time on the trails! She had me cracking up! Lol We sauntered through beautifully kept trails with all kinds of terrain. (Nice long flats, hills, streams, zig zagging through the trees) We stopped to let the horses drink from a running stream and also let them have a quick snack in a nice open area where the views were nice to take in. (They worked hard on our ride they deserve a snack too!) Although, I never expect any guest barn to allow you to go faster than a walk(based on every states insurance policies differing.) But, we did do some trotting during our ride, being that I have experience. My horse Dixie, had a beautiful gliding trot. She was a dream to ride. Margo did a wonderful job with knowing when to trot and how much. Our horses never once broke a sweat. This shows that their horses at this barn are in great shape and they take pride in making sure their horses stay sound and its not all about allowing guests going as fast as possible at the expense of their horse being running into the ground. Guest horses work HARD and deal with many different types of people/personalities every day. Their horses looked both happy and healthy. All in all I cannot say enough about my experience here. I have rode in many places and I also appreciate seeing folks that are there for the horses and making people's (possible very 1st) experience on a horse be both safe, memorable & comfortable! My parents, niece and I visited the awesome "Dead Broke Farm" on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, and let me tell you all, this is truly a lovely place with wonderful staff and volunteers on board! We got there an hour early, since we live almost 3 hours away we wanted to make sure we were on time. When we got there, Art (one of the employees) greeted us and let us know that we could feed the horses with some apples if we wanted while we waited. There was Stormy, Dreamer, Pablo, and a whole bunch more, it was truly horse heaven! The horses where friendly and seemed truly happy, walking towards you as soon as they saw you coming (the fact that we had apples might have had something to do with it). They were well kept and maintained with plenty of space to roam about. One of the campers was also friendly enough to name the horses to us while we went up to feed them. When it was time for the trail ride our horses were chosen for us based on experience, height and weight. My niece rode on what I believe to be a blue eyed pinto horse named Simron and I got what has to be the most amazing well mannered gentle white giant of a draft horse named Handsome who had a best friend or girlfriend named Jenny, a gorgeous chesnut colored draft (my parents came along but did not ride). Anyway, the staff/volunteers saddled our horses and Art made sure they were strapped in well. One of the volunteers, which was 12 years old, did an outstanding job at explaining the proper way to mount and dismount our horses as well as how to properly hold the rains in order for the horses to walk comfortably, turn left or right, and to be able to stop the horse when needed. Once that was done we were told to stand by our horses, and then one by one were helped to mount the horses safely and saddles were adjusted to our leg length. Carla was our trail guide and was last to mount making sure that everyone was ready and felt comfortable. While on the trail she made sure everyone was following along and no one stayed behind. At one point Carla saw Simron, the horse my niece was riding, threatening Stormy, the horse in front of my niece which was being ridden by a 10 year old girl. Carla immediately did the necessary adjustments in order for Stormy to be at ease and not put the young rider in danger and changed the horses lineup. The trail itself was great passing by creeks and even more horses along the way, Blacky a young Labrador came along for the trail ensuring that the horses weren't going to get spooked by forest critters like squirrels, rabbits, etc. All in all it was an amazing, wonderful experience that my niece and I will cherish for time to come. Carla even invited us to come back and if we'd like we could come on over and volunteer. DEAD BROKE FARM you were AMAZING and Carla you ROCK!!!!! read more

Dead Broke Farm is appropriately named. Anyone that uses their brain knows that horses, when cared for properly, are very expensive animals to own. It takes lots of money, so the name should be a clue to those that aren't clueless. I took my two grandchildren there and was horrified at the place. I have owned and shown American Saddlebreds all over the Southeast and owned and trained to jump, a retired Thoroughbred racehorse so I know my horses. I wasn't even comfortable giving this place one star. I now take my kids to Easihorse Farm out by Falls Lake and I highly recommend this wonderful place to anyone. read more

Do NOT go here if you care about your SAFETY and if you are "inexperienced." Dead and Broke indeed. The title of the ranch alone should be your first warning. You will either leave there Dead or Broke. First problem: We encountered was the staff could not do basic math and we even found out she over charged one of our friends. Second problem: The whole staff was disorganized and did not know which group went where. Third: When we finally did get assigned our horses, we waited for about twenty minutes to get mounted and then when we did get mounted, me and my friend just sat there for another thirty minutes, with no direction from anyone. Fourth (and THE number one reason we should have just left): When we finally got to our group to start the trail ride, the guide comes out with an UNTRAINED horse, which she was NOT able to control, and then to make it worse, brought it into the middle of our horses, where that caused a whole problem with all of ours! Luckily, I did have experience with horses and was able to get mine under control. Two other people were yelling and almost had a break down because they were not experienced and they left before it started because of that (me and my friends should have done that as well). It was surprising no one got thrown off, that's how much of a danger she put with the whole group. My husband was one of the less experienced and he was on their big horse, called a draft horse, which was not trained very well at all! I made sure to give them a lot of notice that he needed an easy going horse and when they did finally mount him on, they tell him after "oh this is one of our new, young ones, but once you get on the trail you should be fine." Not the case. Fifth: Come to find out, the guide who just caused all that trouble with the group and did NOT switch horses after that, is the OWNER, Carla. How even more disappointing and unprofessional. Not only did she not switch horses after putting EVERYONE in danger, she did not apologize until near the end of the ride, or to see if everyone was okay after the incident. And her apology was short and showed no remorse. Sixth: The trail ride was a nice forest and my horse was doing good, but everyone else was having problems. These horses were not trained well at all. They were not doing what the rider commanded and come to find out, the two horses that my husband and friend were on, the owner tells them she'll have to put them under the "professional experience." Also, she kept stopping every fifteen minutes, which made all our horses a little aggravated. Seventh: When this monstrous trail of a ride was at the end, she tries to grab my husband's horse, untrained and irritated already, while she was on her own untrained horse, causing more horses to get irritated and endangering his life. He tried politely to tell her he was not comfortable with her near him, but she would not listen. I had to step in and say your horse is causing his horse to get more irritated and then comes the most horrible way to respond to a customer. "Shut the f**** up! You don't know f****** anything!" Let me say I was a little appalled that the OWNER responded to a customer that way and I let her know very much in the same tone she gave me that this is a business and THAT is how you talk to a paying customer? More cussing came out of her mouth and even threats, "Shut the f*** up! I'll kick your f****** a**!" This owner had MAJOR anger issues and was acting insane, so I disengaged and did not argue further, even when my other friends and husband started to argue as well. When I stopped, she kept yelling. WOW. Come to find out, she did this earlier with one of my other friends, but it got diffused quickly. When my friend and I mentioned a refund, her reply was "You ain't getting no f****** refund, this ain't no f****** Wal-mart!" When we left, I looked up other reviews and a lot of people have had the same reaction from the OWNER. One even said her daughter had an unpaid internship there and had to leave after 3 days because of the verbal abuse! I wish I could give 0 stars if the ratings would allow it. I will NEVER go back here or recommend anyone here. If you value your safety, want a good experience, and want care and customer service, this place is NOT one of those. Staff and volunteers were very kind and knowledgeable. The scenery was beautiful and relaxing. Unfortunately had a rude tour guide, which is disappointing because we spent $200 (including tip). The owner is very rude and treats all customers, volunteers as if they are stupid. Her mother and daughter are also the same. I feel very sorry for the horses there as they are also treated as if they are stupid and react as such. All they want is attention and care. Carla thinks she is doing a good thing by taking in all these horses and trying to support herself by providing trail rides to the public but she is doing an injustice to the horses. She has too many and cannot handle their care- and I am not talking about health care but emotional care and attention. She depends on volunteers to help water and feed them, also relying on two hired hands but it is still not enough. She takes her frustration out on customers and volunteers. She may have good intentions but the farm is not being run appropriately. I will give her some credit though because I have seen some customers come in with no horse experience and act like a bunch of idiots around the horses as well. These animals deserve respect and before you go to any horse farm, you need to educate yourself on how to behave with horses. YouTube has some videos about this. We signed up for a two-hour trail ride and had a fantastic time. Farm staff is helpful and friendly, and the horses seemed well cared for. While we chose horses for non-beginners, they seemed to have horses appropriate for all levels of horseback riding experience (including children). Highly recommended! read more

My mother took my three children for a trail ride here yesterday (ages 8, 9 & 11). Not only did they start 45 mins late, the staff was very impatient with the small children in the group as well as the horses. So much so, one of the ladies kicked a horse with work boots on in front of my children. Needless to say they left frustrated, upset, and hungry since the disorganization put them so far behind. I went to this company for a trail ride and with a friend of mine. Her horse was acting erratic and instead of them changing horses they told her that the horse would calm down once it started walking. The horse did not calm down, in fact it took off running with my friend on it. She fell of the horse and broke her wrist in multiple places. The people at Dead Broke Farm NEVER followed up to see if she was okay and they have refused to refund my money for a ride that was not even taken. It seemed like they just wanted us off the property before more people came and realized that one of their customers was hurt. I have been to other ranches where safety and customer service is a priority, this was not one of them. read more
