We joined this facility literal days before the COVID pandemic sent us all into hiding. I paid a very large deposit and needless to say had to have a refund issued. At the time the lady with whom i spoke assured me that the refund would be returned and my "membership" would be placed on hold. Well... My card was charged again for April. We've not attended a single class mind you; I called as soon as I noticed the charge and was told that she told "them" to put my membership on hold. I don't know who "they" are, but surely *someone* is in charge of such issues with such a large organization. It is now a week, 3 emails and 3 phone calls later and I do not have my refund. In this age of technology I know it is just a few clicks of a button to get this resolved. There's no excuse. My next steps are 5 On Your Side or the Attorney General. read more

I have two boys, 10 and 8, who love Master Chang's! They couldn't wait to go after school and learn their next skill and practice their round house kicks! The program is extremely well organized and the Masters do a phenomenal job of teaching the art and techniques of Taekwondo in a fun, exciting way. I was surprised how quickly our boys were picking up on Taekwondo skills! Especially for my older son, he really got into it. So after 4 1/2 months of classes the time has come for me to write my review. We have passed this dojo for the last 3 years and finally decided to sign our son up. The nice thing about Master Chang's is that they give you a grace period of one month to try things out before you make a decision and sign a year long contract. They also have a trial class for you or your little one to try out. Everyone here takes the martial arts seriously but at the same time want your children to have fun and this is seen from the smiling faces that come into each class. The Master's make an effort to greet students and ask how they are without it seeming like a chore. My son shy's away from athletics and yet we knew that he needed something else to train his mind besides school. This has been the perfect addition to his week and we have seen a difference in his behavior and the way he interacts with us and his sibling. I visited Master Chang's when my kids were invited to a birthday party for a classmate. Our experience was overwhelmingly positive. Note: This is a Tiger Den affiliated studio teaching Tae Kwan Do. To begin, we were treated to a demonstration by some of the students and staff. The kids were hugely entertained and it was impressive to see even younger students doing very well in the demonstration; it makes you think the instructors must be talented with kids if they are able to make good progress with kids who look to be no older than 6 or 7. After the demonstration, they brought the kids up for a "lesson". All of the kids had a blast learning to kick, punch, etc and the instructors were silly and entertaining both to make the kids comfortable and for the parents' enjoyment. To settle the kids down we enjoyed punch, ice cream, and cake (cake provided by the mother). The plates, etc were quickly cleared away by the staff; the entire place was very clean, which I appreciate. FInally, they took the kids into the dance studio to play some parachute games, and handed out coupons to the parents for any kids interested in becoming students. Long story short: I don't feel comfortable giving five stars when I am not knowledgeable enough about TKD to judge their instructors, pricing, or syllabus, but I can say that I was impressed by the friendly staff, clean studio, and this was definitely one of the best kids' birthday parties I have been to in a while! read more

Well, my boys are finally done with Master Chang's...they reached the level just before their black belts and I pulled them out of the doehjang. I'm giving them a 2/5 because the start was great! In my opinion, the higher they progress, the less attention was given to students. There were days I felt like my child didn't earn their stripes but they were given to them anyways. I spoke to the owner asking why a child was teaching my child. He replied that they give kids in the master's program a chance to teach. The problem with this is that THAT child asked my child to teach their group bc the kid didn't know his form. If I am paying to attend a doehjang to teach my children, I expect it to be done by an adult master...or else discount our monthly tuition! I also felt that it became more about the quantity of people and not the quality of the class or instruction. I really appreciated that when I went to the manager with my concerns he immediately me out of my contract with NO penalties. Which earned the second star. My kids were six months away from their black belts, but I felt like I needed to stick with my conviction- I need my kids to learn that unless they feel that they have earned their belts with hard work it's not worth continuing just to say they have it. Also- if you decide sign with them, I was able to negotiate many things- so make sure to advocate for what you want and get it in writing or you could be stuck with a large monthly bill for 3-5 years and some very unhappy kid! read more

They offer taekwondo, hapkido, after school care, track out camp, summer camp, birthday parties and bully prevention workshops. Don't go to a bogus karate dojo with no asian instructors! At Master Chang's, they have Korean certified tae kwon do masters, as well as Korean exchange students for instructors. They teach character building, discipline, respect and culture. My son's self esteem has improved tremendously in the year he's attended classes. He has learned how to handle bullies and make new friends. Birthday Party! We celebrated my son's seventh birthday with the crew at Master Chang's. I would highly recommend having the celebrations at Master Chang's. It's more than kids running around while parents stand, but a performance, interactive and fun. BIRTHDAY PARTY!!! WOW is all I can say! We have been to and have hosted too many to count. This wasn't just a party, but an experience. They performed a demonstration that is more like a choreographed show. The kids get to take a class to learn more about TKD and then they get to break boards! It was as fun and entertaining for the parents as much as the kids. If you are looking for a venue for a birthday party, especially something different than the standard bounce park, play structure or amusement venue this is the place. On another note, we have also been taking our now 5 year old son to the Tiger Tots classes for about 4 months. What an amazing program! What we love most is the attention the give to eye, body and mind focus. Having this class and these principles has given us the language to have dialouge regarding behavior at home and school. This place was recommended from a friend who's child is a student. We were given a pass for a free trial. After a month my child was hooked. The instructors are top notch who are great with kids, make the classes super fun, are attentive, and although discipline is a focus it's not so much pressure the kids don't enjoy it. (Well, I have to say I have noticed the kids who don't have discipline at home tend to not do so well here and don't last long before they're whining to mommy or daddy who are the root of the issues anyway.) My child has now been attending for 6 months and still enjoys going. Tae kwon do provides great exercise, discipline, improved focus, and self-confidence. Prices are comparable to other schools I visited but with classes which are more fun. My only complain would be the turn-over on some of the instructors. The owner and head master, Grand Master Chang, is normally there and instructs some classes. Master J. Kim, who I assume is the lead Master if there is such a thing and who is an absolutely fantastic instructor, is usually leading most classes. But most of the other Masters are here in the states for a short time before returning to Korea. My child had grown fond of one of the Masters only to learn he had to return to Korea. :sadface: Would love to see Master "Handsome" Pak return some day. Oversized classes (50 to 70 students) and only 2 instructors. The forms class is less than 5 minutes of actual form. Student progress is so slow that by the time the student learns one form routine, he has forgotten the previous one. Instructors are not able to pay attention to detail due to overwhelming class size, so students are not encouraged and trained adequately. Students are getting discouraged and lose interest. Master Chang's Martial Arts may be good for a birthday party, but a serious and professional Martial Arts school they are not. read more

We saw a Groupon or Living Social deal (I forget which) and decided to sign up our 5 year old son for 1 month of unlimited classes at Master Chang's. It was his first exposure to martial arts outside of what he sees on power rangers and Daddy watching UFC fights. It has been a great experience and I expect we will continue with it well beyond the 1 month. They have an amazing kids program/class schedule for "Tiger Tots" which is for beginners in the 3-5 age range. Master Chang leads some but not all of the classes; but regardless, they have an amazing group of instructors and students/assistants that help keep the kids organized and engaged during classes. They are all super good with the kids. Not afraid to laugh at themselves. Somehow they manage to maintain order/discipline all the while joking and smiling with the kids. I didn't know what to expect going in but I have to say all my expectations were met or surpassed. They offer a free class to anybody who wants to try it out...so try it out! read more

After a wonderful phone call and a great first class, I have to say I am so impressed with Master Chang's entire program - the philosophy, the flexibility in the class schedule, the friendliness and attitude of every employee is exceptional. Every lesson is fun, hands on, and instructive. They really adhere to the idea that this can teach and reinforce life lessons like respect for parents and adults, focus, and I even heard the instructor today mention less video games and more reading! Gotta love that approach to life! The staff go out of their way to make new ones feel welcome and are so energetic and positive. Master chang Strickland location started off going well. We initially went there for the free visit just to see if our kids would like it. During the class I was interrupted by their sales lady. She was trying to talk me into signing my boys up. When we signed up I made it clear that my kids participate in other sports so they may not be able to attend consistently. She then ensured me that I could pause or cancel at any time. That was the ONLY reason I signed up bc I knew my kids schedule. Well fast forward to recently my kids haven't attended a class since December yet I was still charged for January and February. I called and that same lady answers and say she would have it refunded. I told her my kids were participating in other sports(more than usual) so I didn't know if it when they would return. She said no problem just let me know when they're ready to return. Okay Great and they refunded my money. April comes and I get another charge, again my kids have not been there since December. This time she tells me "oh it was charged bc we can only put a 3 month hold" well she didn't put the hold on my account until February and you charge me in April...that's not 3 months. Then I asked to just cancel and she then bring up some 25% charge. It's crazy! I will not recommend giving you money to this company. I still haven't received a refund. DONT DO IT! Plus my kids went faithfully twice a week and they never moved past blk strips on their white belt. read more

My son had his birthday party here and it was awesome. Even all the parents had a great time. All children got to break a board. The best part of me was cutting the cake with the samarai sword. They cut the whole cake, so we didn't have to do that. The staff was very helpful and did almost all the clean up for us while parents held a board for their children to break. My son has been studying taekwondo with Master Yu at the Durham location for the past year. He loves Master Yu, and enjoys learning the art. My only criticism, which will likely be a determining factor for us continuing classes, is the business feel that it has. We paid a registration fee to start (cannot exactly remember the fee), and have paid $169/month for the last year. Despite having second thoughts about continuing, we were stuck in a contract. I am now learning that in order to continue onto the next level (Black Belt Program), we need to pay a $300 registration fee, and $200+/month. I have been a parent of two children for 10+ years and have had my kids in all sorts of extracurricular activities so I am aware that these programs exist to make money so that they can be sustainable. My criticism is that it is costly, and continues to get more costly as the kids progress. Too, there are additional elements that they use to "sell" the kids on the next level (ie: equipment, new uniforms, BB track, etc). Of course, to a 6 year old kid, these are all exciting components. I told Master Yu that I was uncomfortable paying the next level price, and while he was absolutely understanding, he made it seem like there was a timeline on how long I could stick with my original $169/month plan before my son would no longer be able to move up and get additional belts. Currently we attend 2/3 classes per week. Based on what I am understanding, my son/our family will need to make a decision in the near future about whether we want to spend more money or discontinue the classes, because he will be unable to move up any longer in the original plan. There is a chart that has all sorts of different numbers and deals with certain deadlines. Whereas we have had a great experience with Master Changs, the pressure to continue the program around certain deadlines and prices is super unattractive-particularly for working parents that are juggling multiple extracurricular activities with multiple children. My 10 year old is on a junior olympics track for gymnastics and our fee has been the same fee ($150) for the last 4 years. Her gym feels like a place committed to the development of the athlete (while also paying the bills), while MC feels like a major business endeavor that is committed to making $. read more
