Samurai sword cake cutting was a big hit!!

We had my son's 5th birthday party at Master Chang's and it did not disappoint! The staff put on an amazing skills demonstration that wowed the kids (and parents). They had their own mini class and ended the event with board braking. Everyone left singing the studio's and staff's praises. While the birthday party was amazing, I was not surprised. My son takes taekwondo from Master Chang's and it has been a wonderful experience. He has become much more confident in trying new activities and in his interactions with adults and peers. The staff does a great job not only teaching them the basic skills of taekwondo, but making sure have a great time while learning respect and discipline.

Here is the summer camp schedule, there is a Groupon out there too!

Master Y Kim is an amazing instructor, capturing and keeping the kids attention with fun exercises and learning experiences. He knows every kid by name, seems to genuinely care about their progress and is great at recognizing where kids need extra help. Ms Petra is always there with a smile on her face to greet children and parents alike, and to make sure the kids have the best time. No matter how busy she is, she always makes time to ask how you are doing. The program at Master Chang's blends taekwondo instruction with character building skills and experiences. The staff and class helpers foster an atmosphere of positivity, support, and respect amongst the kids in a fun and engaging way. My child looks forward to every class he goes to, and this is the first activity where he hasn't complained once about going, or asking when it will be over.  We recently also had his birthday party there and it was super fun for all involved, including even the parents who got to participate in the taekwondo lesson, watch a performance from the talented demo team of students from this location, and hold boards while their children broke them with the skills they learned at the party. Parents let us know how much fun their children had and commented on how engaging Master Y Kim was specifically. I highly recommend anyone to try out taekwondo classes at Master Chang's and specifically this location.

Either you know what you have been learning and practicing, or you don't. A colored belt doesn't change who you are and what you are capable of. Regular classes are an hour long and will have healthy food served afterwards. You are not kicked out of the school when you finish your class, instead you are encouraged to stay and practice and workout with your fellow kung fu brothers and sisters. It is a large school with two main practice rooms, a bag room, and a gym room. There is also a kitchen with a dining area and two private rooms that can be used for meditation or massage therapy. Sifu Smith teaches a few styles of Tai Chi, Bagua, Hop Gar (Tibetan Kung Fu), Choi Li Fut, and a few other select more private styles. Its rare that you find a teacher that has a great lineage, and its also rare to find a teacher who is exceptional at teaching. When you find a teacher that has a great lineage and is a great teacher, consider yourself fortunate to learn there. We have students there who have come from various martial backgrounds from people who have run their own schools, to people who have never stepped in a gym. There is no judgement, only encouragement. Sifu Smith also is good with children, including children with special needs. I encourage you to visit the school and see for yourself. You can visit the webpage at: www.tibetankungfu.net

Mr. Haase and Mr. Barker are very nice people and are good instructors…read more That said, the business model for the ATA is ridiculous and expensive for watered down martial arts. DO NOT SIGN YOU CHILD UP FOR A 3 YR BLACK BELT CONTRACT. Your child will undoubtedly tire of the repetitive "forms" and get sick of the program, with rare exceptions. If you do this, I encourage you to set up month to month payments so you/your child can stop as you wish and don't throw away money. This is EXPENSIVE. The gear cost is exorbitant. There are a thousand different colored belts and graduations; not surprisingly, this is because the ATA gets a payment for each graduation. For higher belts, there are two graduations for each color. 1 X (color) belt "recommended" and 1 (same color) belt "decided". Why are there so many?!!! At higher levels, there are required mid terms and boot camps and each cost a hefty fee. There is also a substantial yearly ATA membership fee. These things add up quickly. Instructors are mostly good, especially for kids. For adults, instructors treat you with respect, but respectfully like a child. Imagine calling kids "sir" and having to hear their life advice; that's what it feels like. There's a patronizing attitude, so this may not be a good training environment for adults. I suggest you take up Kra or some other practical martial art where instructors don't have a superiority complex. In many cases they are the ones who could benefit from some advice in all honesty. I could not keep track of the number of students who keep going due to to parents signing them up for a contract of several years, but are miserable. Please avoid this contract completely.

At first I was super excited as I called and was told they do birthday parties and was quoted a great price. Confirmed with the guy on the phone the date I needed and then we scheduled time to meet for a tour and to go over paperwork. Met the next day and it was as if we had never spoken. The guy tells me they require a two weeks notice because they need to send out emails. Basically told me he couldnt help and turned my son and I away. I had already explained to him on the phone 7/18 that I needed 7/30. So disappointed that they were so ready to turn away business. They seemed very frigid and dishonest...the exact opposite of what I want to teach my son.

The shopping center is anchored by a Food Lion, so there is usually plenty of parking. It is to the right of Two Roosters Ice Cream and to the left of Greystone Recreation Center. The non-profit community theatre opened in 2002. I'm not sure exactly when I found this gem, but boy, has it changed since I started attending shows here. Seating was once all floor seats and has taken on many transformations since then. It currently has 8 rows of 12 seats, with row A being floor level and B-H as stadium seating, with an aisle in the middle. It has always been an intimate theatre, and you are never far from the stage. Besides the seating, professional-grade updates were made to both the lighting and technical side of things because of Liz Droessler. Ticket prices are reasonable, and there are reduced rates for educators, seniors and veterans. Seats are assigned, and the website makes it easy to select the seat you wish to sit in. Some of the seats are accessible. Tim Locklear became the managing artistic director in 2014. He welcomed me as well as those I introduced to this theatre. He strove to create an inclusive community and brought shows to venues I hadn't always heard of. He wasn't afraid to tackle the hot-topic shows and brought these issues to the forefront. These shows tackled alzheimer's, mental illness, PTSD, eugenics, abortion, race relations, and LGBTQ+ stories. Some of these shows were uncomfortable to watch, but the stories needed to be heard, and I left with a much better perspective. In 2022, NRACT won the NCTC Community Theatre Award for belonging, inclusion, and diversity. Tim retired in September 2025 but is still directing shows, most recently Boys in the Band. It is playing for a few more weeks if you want to see a deep show. The performances here are always high quality, from the talented performers to the sets and costumes. They've had Parade; Don't Bother Me, I can't Cope, Dot: Grown-Ups; Church and State; Next to Normal, Calendar Girls; Dogfight; Equus; Roe; Always Patsy Cline and Young Frankenstein are a few. If you want a story that stays with you, NRACT is where to go for meaningful theatre. It's the kind of place where you aren't just an anonymous seat number but a valued part of a community. Lormarev Jones recently took the helm as Managing Director, with Jess Barbour as Artistic Director, so I am excited to see what their energy brings to NRACT.
