I was the one who felt sorry: sorry that it had taken me so many years to discover one of Raleigh's most beloved independent record stores. Tucked into downtown, Sorry State Records is easy to miss if you don't know it's there. But step inside, and the pace immediately shifts. The shop is bright, thoughtfully organized, and refreshingly unpretentious. Shelves of carefully curated vinyl invite slow browsing rather than hurried shopping, making it the kind of place where time slips away unnoticed. I brought my brother-in-law, an avid record collector visiting from St. Louis, and watching him explore the collection was almost as enjoyable as browsing myself. While I'm far from a vinyl expert, he immediately commented on how well organized the inventory was; a detail seasoned collectors genuinely appreciate. His visit was made even better when he unearthed a copy of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the kind of unexpected find that makes digging through record bins so rewarding. This shop's selection was not what most people were looking for, it was what the owner was looking for, and it was the smallest selection I have ever seen in this shop. I understand RSD is an expensive day for shops and they cannot buy everything to have in stock. However, that was not the biggest problem. This shop is dirty. There is a cat and the shop smells like it doesn't know how to use the litter box. The owner tries to cover up the odor by burning incense nonstop, and the ashes from the incense just pile up on the shelf. I walked out feeling like I needed to take a bath with the stench stuck in my nose.

I booked a gaming truck for my son's 10th birthday. I got a confirmation email that the booking request was received and then my PayPal was deducted the $100. I feel like I talked via email to someone to confirm, but I never could find that email. In July I emailed ensuring that we were on the schedule, and I saw my 4pm slot was greyed out online. All good! This week I've been swamped with work, trying to get ready for my son's party & out of town guests. I have been looking out for some sort of communication from them for the pat few days, but there's been no communication. Yesterday morning I sent an email seeing if there's anything else I need to do. By early afternoon I had not gotten a response, so I go on their website to find a phone number. As I'm searching I see that it says payment is due 5 days before so yes I agreed to it (no problem, never has been, but it was so strange that no one has reached out for payment, and honestly I forgot about this 5 day thing.... I booked in April!). But if I got an invoice, I would have paid. And then I see our 4pm slot for 9/3 is now available, and I got worried (see screenshot). I called Sophia. She told me that I didn't pay so she cancelled after 3 email attempts!! She NEVER even tried to call me. Then she said that they are already booked for tomorrow so she can't help me (although their website clearly says all slots are open). She never apologizes and is basically like "well, it is what it is. There's nothing I can do". Yes, I was heated as my 10 year old was sitting right beside me listening to this with tears welling up in his eyes bc his gaming truck is not coming. I was not yelling, in fact I was in the lobby of DPAC dealing with this, about to go see Wicked with my boy. I was not yelling and I was not rude. I did heatedly tell her that I can't believe they do business like this. AND SHE HUNG UP ON ME!!! How do you cancel a reservation without making every attempt to get in touch with the person who booked it?! The ONLY mention of this 5 day thing is on the booking page. I'll add screenshots of policies, it's not there. I told her I've searched my inbox, there are no emails from her (see attached image.... nothing), and I asked what email she sent it to.... she looked and said "your first name and last name @gmail.com". I said that's not my email. My email has my middle initial in it between first and last. She goes "oh yeah, it was that email". I have now asked for screenshots of emails. Unbelievable she blamed it all on me! Asking me why didn't I call if I knew payment was due 5 days before bc I agreed to that when I booked. Again, I booked in April! Blaming the customer... how disrespectful. I rely on the company to bill me and tell me when a payment is due, and call me if perhaps it slipped through the cracks and there's no response. We even had an email thread going, and she didn't even attempt to reply to that. There's a part of me that wonders if they were ever going to show up, and if this is a scam. She took my $100 deposit (that she refuses to give back) and blames me, claiming that the customer should just remember to contact her to pay 5 days in advance. No where on policies does it say the things she's suggesting about payment and cancellation. It's shady!!!! If you want a reliable gaming company, go with GAME ON. I called them after this BS, begging them to help us. My 10 year old was in tears at the DPAC, so upset over this cancellation, and Game On went above and beyond to make sure that one of their gaming trucks will be here for us tomorrow!! Carolina Gaming is unreliable and I do not trust them. Stay away if you want the truck to actually show up at your kid's party.

Kids had a blast , this was the best party with easy clean up . Great communication, I would definitely recommend and will be booking again!

Since there is a sidewalk, you can walk from one place to the other easily. There is generally plenty of free parking in the parking lot unless an event is happening. When you enter, there is a ramp inside the store to take you smoothly down into the main book displays. The children's section is in the front section. Other genres are clearly labeled throughout the store. Don't miss the second half of the store in the other room. The bookstore is locally owned and has a large, knowledgeable staff, so you will always find someone friendly and willing to help you navigate the shelves. Personally, I love that the store features banned books, as I always want to read what they don't want me to read! I like the staff picks too and reading their thoughts on a book. I appreciate that local authors are highlighted here. On my last visit, I was thrilled to score a signed copy of a local author's book that is only sold at Page 158 Books. I also got another book not normally in my genre for a more fun read. Page 158 Books has book clubs, author signings, and other events. Back when they were on White Street, they had coloring nights and brought the community together and introduced me to the store. It is a great local bookstore!

I know there is an Ashley Christensen restaurant opening there too which I'm excited for as well as a Starbucks, and Snooze eatery. You can also access the Wegman's parking garage towards the back of the plaza, head behind Club Pilates. Parking is easy, if you can't find one of their "street" parking spots they have a parking lot around the back by Cava.

This is the reason I label this a "Urban" mall is because of all the street apparel stores. If you're looking for high end luxury designer shoppes like Lululemon, Nordstrom, Louis V., you won't find that here. At all. This is a decent mall to stroll through for a walk or if you need to pick up something quick while in the area. Some of the stores are small businesses just paying rent and not very popular. I have enjoyed shopping at Spencer's, DTLR, Foot Locker, Hollister, PacSun, Macy's, BELK. I mostly shop this mall for my preteen. It is so convenient when in the area, to stop by and shop quickly. Parking is effortless. I hope they can renovate this mall. It has soooo much potential to be better. The food court does not offer many options. I frequent the Chinese buffet Sinowok. The food is consistently good and the large portions are affordable to share with someone else. Customer service is excellent.

Schoolkids Records is cool when it comes to record shops because if combines my old favorite, a bar with my new favorite, records. It was so nice to flip through vinyl, check out band merch and then pop a squat for a cold one. I love the embrace of nerd culture, action figures cover the bar. And CDs are used as artsy decoration. Oh how times have changed since, I was a kid. I also love that they have a stage. I don't live in the area but it would be a great spot for in store shows. Definitely worth popping in for some new tunes and a beer! And the employees conversations reminded me of a scene from "High Fidelity"! Too good to pass up!
