I recently bought a "beater" car to keep miles off my newer one. It has a cd and cassette player so I needed to get some used cds since my collection is pretty scratched up. They have a decent selection of cds, records and DVDs for sale (used and new). Each cd that I bought was used but looked brand new. I thought the prices were a little high for some of them, but reasonable for others. I will definitely return. The staff were friendly and there's lots of parking. read more

O.K. place for used CD shopping.....not really that big a selection,though.Anyway....the main girl that works there most of the time is very rude,unhelpful,and could care less if you are in the store or not.Absolutely horrible.Also....the music that's played in store is absolutely awful.Usually cant stay for more than 15 or 20 minutes because the music is so bad.Punk,rap and other assorted garbage drives me right out of the store.Don't waste your time,your money,or your hearing at this place.Terrible experiences. read more

This is a great little record shop. The owners are amazing humans and the store is very well stocked and everyone is always very friendly and accommodating. They hold events that support local music and it just has a really dope vibe. They sell awesome swag and stuff from local vendors as well. Definitely check them out! read more

I am new to whole record shopping business. I am normally the tag along. I am here for the ride. But then I got use to listening to records on Saturday mornings while enjoying a home made scramble and coffee. Schoolkids Records is cool when it comes to record shops because if combines my old favorite, a bar with my new favorite, records. It was so nice to flip through vinyl, check out band merch and then pop a squat for a cold one. I love the embrace of nerd culture, action figures cover the bar. And CDs are used as artsy decoration. Oh how times have changed since, I was a kid. I also love that they have a stage. I don't live in the area but it would be a great spot for in store shows. Definitely worth popping in for some new tunes and a beer! And the employees conversations reminded me of a scene from "High Fidelity"! Too good to pass up! read more

Wasn't overly impressed with the selection or presentation of the shop. Would like to see a more defined section of vinyl organized with new and used separated. They did have a couple of gems but nothing that was very rare or a must have. Some of the "grail" selections they did have were way overpriced. I didn't purchase anything as the price on the few that I wanted was too high. The store could have great potential if it was a little cleaner and better organized. Could also do with way less CDs. Felt like I had to spend a lot of time digging around to find anything I was looking for. read more

I wasn't overwhelmed with the place. I like 45s - and some stores have a great selection; some not. They had plenty of 45s, but a lot of new stuff (last 20 years) - where I'm for the 70s and 80s. I found a few decent ones - and saw a few more that were a lot more than I paid for them elsewhere. Nothing against the place - just not a spot I would come back to. read more

Schoolkids is what a real record shop is and should be. Tickets to your favorite events, live in store shows. Exclusive vinyl and promotions. The best most Knowledgeable people and great ownership. Stopped by for a free live show, which I thought was a great way to promote local music, the space was small, but not too bad. They have a great selection of CDs and vinyls, and a $2.99 section which was delightful to look through. One big complaint, the event was advertised as having $2 PBR, how ever when we arrived about 30 minutes after the start of the event, they were already out of PBR. :( read more

If the small record store is going to survive it's going to have to do better than this. I've spent a lot of money at Schoolkids but they've gone downhill significantly. The inventory is lousy and the staff is fairly rude. I actually heard a clerk tell a customer that "capitalism is a virus". This in a retail store. I love this place. they sell records and new and used CD's. In addition they have bands perform inside the store, and have a bar with beer and soft drinks available. All together this makes for a very cool experience. Get out here and see some of their performers. read more

Bought a beer and ended up spending 80 dollars on Neil Diamond albums, so don't buy a beer if you don't like spending money. I was okay with it though, because the dude was on the phone the whole time and didn't notice my stack enough to judge, Honestly not even sure I was charged full price for the craft beer I got, because there were these dudes who apparently knew what they were doing, hovering over a bunch of Pink Floyd and Metallica albums. I don't know what they spent, but I just hope they didn't drink the beers.... read more

We visited the Durham location. Fantastic experience- met the owner and picked up some great vinyl. This store is part of a coalition of independent record stores including our local shop, Waterloo Records in Austin. The owner is super nice, current on all things music, and clearly loves what he does. If you're bringing your son or daughter to visit Duke, definitely make this part of the experience. If she/he loves music, the owner will definitely be part of the next four years. A++ read more

Schoolkids is an excellent Raleigh establishment. Their selection is solid and their staff are friendly and engaged in the music community. Local bands play sets there occasionally. They have a really good vinyl selection and a solid CD selection. Often times I will order items online through Schoolkids. Yes, they are more expensive than iTunes, but only barely. The prices for CDs has pretty much not risen at all in the past 20 years, so I can routinely get a CD ordered online through Schoolkids for about $14. I really encourage you to shop here and support a local business. They also serve draft beer! read more
