It was a Saturday when I swung through, so all of the tourists from the Blue Ridge Parkway were stopping by for their tourist shopping fix. So I don't blame the chaos on the store so much as the tourists acting all rude and entitled, shoving their way around the store. I digress. The deli sandwich I had was very good, and made promptly. I also had a homemade brownie which had the perfect amount of sweetness and walnut ratio to it. I wanted to try the Possum Pie but just get the nerve up to ask what was in it. I mean it couldn't have been real possum could it? They do have limited outside tables. The farmers market was bustling when I arrived at 10am. There are many vendors, inside and outside featuring clothing, organic foods of all types, tea, fresh flowers (some only 25 cents a stem!), honey, ferments, mushrooms, and so much more. I loaded up a basket with organic cabbage, green beans, kohlrabi, kale, squash, zucchini, broccolini...I was SHOCKED when I unloaded and the cashier added everything up- $13! I had recently moved to Asheboro and soon realized there are no solid farmers markets here and in my research located RGSPTFM. When I took the turn into the grounds, I was quickly impressed. They have a section for flowers and plants, a section for outdoor decor and gardening supplies, a section for crafts and such, a FOOD TRUCK section, and of course 2 large areas for produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, fresh floral arrangements, local honey, fresh eggs and so much more. It's so much fun to head out on a Saturday morning and walk through all of the sections. Lots of friendly vendors selling their wares and lots of people watching if you are into that. I come for the meats, produce, and homemade baked goods and have yet to be disappointed. You'll find the freshest picked everything, from cucumbers to tomatoes and all points between. The market is fully covered, providing some much needed shade, and there are some permanent vendors that have an indoor facility such as an ice cream parlor, candy and fudge, general store, etc. There are full bathroom facilities on site, and even a restaurant called the Moose Cafe at the back which served southern favorites. Of course, what is offered depends on the season. You'll find a bounty of selections starting in late spring, through the summer, and into the fall. In the winter, produce starts to become more sparse, but there is no shortage of places to buy your Christmas tree if you celebrate with one of those. Best advice is to bring cash, but many vendors can take a card these days. You may get charged a little extra for using plastic in some spots though, and to help with these folks margins, cash is preferable.
