If you're visiting the quaint town of Floyd Va, or lucky enough to live nearby, do yourself a favor and spend some time in Cocoa Mia. The owner, Grayson, has an infectious love of chocolate, fine wine, great food, travel, and life in general. I enjoy the "Sipping Chocolate." It's a cream and cocoa mixture that resembles a melted candy bar. It's served in a cup, with a spoon, that you will need. Decadently rich and delicious. The "regular" hot chocolate is a favorite with the foreign student community at the University in Blacksburg Va. The hand made chocolates are very creative, beautiful, and delicious. One of my favorites, dark chocolate with cayenne pepper! The well traveled proprietor has also added a small, but EXCELLENT cafe, serving European inspired dishes (omnivores and vegans accommodated) and a selection of remarkable wines. From my experience it's the only place in the area where you can actually have a bottle of very fine Rioja, a Caymus Cab, or a special occasion champagne. There are affordable wine offerings that are excellent also. When not too busy, the owner takes time to talk with his customers. The conversations may be about chocolate, food, wine, travel, or life in general. Grayson's enthusiasm for all of these things, especially life, is uplifting! Heads up! This was the most darling chocolate shop I've ever experienced! It was a bit chilly when I stumbled upon this gem. I was immediately greeted by a most pleasant owner, delicious sweetness in the air, and FREE HAND CRAFTED HOT COCOA AND FREE CHOCOLATE. It was creamy, rich and delicious. Excellent place to check out if you're into a variety of chocolates. We tasted a sample of dark chocolate which was bursting with unique flavors. I was early for my appointment this morning and spent about 30 minutes here drinking great coffee, eating wonderful pastries and visiting with Grayson. I loved the sweets so much that I bought more and his hand-made candies to bring home to my wife. Amazing atmosphere, delicious chocolates, and better service and staff. It's family owned, small local business. Jennifer and Grayson, the owners, bought out this business from its previous owner and have been in business for about a year now. The last time we went there, my wife prohibited me from going inside. Said that I would go in there and take forever just chatting up the owners and hanging out. The price is a bit high, but the quality and experience make it worth it. The absolute best thing ever is the sipping chocolate. Our first time there they were out of this item. The response was perfect, they offered to make it for me fresh if I could wait about 10 minutes. That response sold me, fan for life! read more

I stopped in after doing business in the court house. A quaint shop with a charming chocolatier. I had a nice coffee and a chocolate covered almond stuffed date. But the chocolate dipped coconut macaroon was as good as I've had in NYC. If you find yourself in Floyd do not miss this spot. read more

This charming gem of a chocolate shop is located in my favorite new small town to explore - Floyd, Virginia. Conveniently located on Main Street, Cocoa Mia sells exquisite chocolates hand made with very fine ingredients. The shop is owned and operated by a husband-wife team. The day my beloved and I visited, the husband, Grayson Rudd, was tending, and he couldn't have been more hospitable. He was generous with his time, with interesting chocolate facts, and... with samples! My favorite truffle flavor? Lavendar-Earl Grey. Yum! The shop also has an impressive array of top shelf chocolate bars and beautifully packaged chocolate-o-licious gifts. Oh! And hot cocoa! The experience of visiting Cocoa Mia was so fun, I felt a bit like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory! read more

We loved this store. It's cute, cozy, and overall a real find. While it is listed as pricey, I don't really agree. Compared to other chocolate stores (Godiva, Chocolate Spike in Blacksburg) prices are quite reasonable, with most truffles running in the $1.65 - $2.00, depending on the ingredients. Obviously, if you're used to picking up a box of Russell Stover, this is expensive, but not when looking at comparable chocolate. The owners of the store were there, minding the counter, and they were amazingly friendly and helpful. They obviously have a passion for their chocolate, and offered recommendations and assistance with great enthusiasm. Now on to the really important thing -- the CHOCOLATE! We had a pretty big sampling, between myself, my two daughters, and my wife. My oldest ordered the classic dark sipping chocolate. This really is a chocolate bar in drinking form, and quite delicious. We all had some -- it was more than my daughter could drink (it wasn't a large mug, but it is very rich). My younger daughter had a fudgesicle. These are also made in-store, and are very good -- but it's a fudgesicle, nothing really super-special. However, it went very well with the warm sipping chocolate drink. Bite of fudgesicle, sip of chocolate. Yum! My wife and I had a sampling of truffles. The selection apparently changes all of the time. We had Mayan Chocolate (dark chocolate with cinnamon and cayenne), Chocolate buttercreams (vanilla and chocolate buttercream), Chocolate peanut butter, and took home several other varieties. My favorite was the Mayan Chocolate -- it was a hint spicy, without being overpowering. Quite delicious. My wife loved the buttercreams, with their very thin, perfectly tempered outer chocolate shell and homemade buttercream interiors. She'd go back just for those. Overall, this was a wonderful experience that I will definitely be repeating. read more

We were rushing around the corner just after five (closing time) by the off chance that they were still open, and the kindest shop owner greeted us outside and told us to come in. While selecting our yummy truffles, another lady came in asking if they were still open because she wanted iced coffee, and he said he would make her some. If you're in Floyd, stop by and visit this patient and accommodating man for some tasty treats. The vanilla bean buttercream was my favorite. read more

My fiancé planned a trip to visit Floyd. While looking at things to do online before coming, I saw this place and was very excited. However, actually visiting the store was very disappointing. The two workers never acknowledged me the 10 minutes I was in the store, but were so attentive to the other customers. The prices were crazy high for weird chocolate. Seriously, who's gonna pay $18.95 for a small bag of hot chocolate mix? This store was not what I was expecting. I will not be returning. Very disappointing. read more

Thank god, somewhere to get my gourmet chocolate fix on! The truffles we tried were delicious, I also got a matcha which was good, but still had a ton of lumps, which i expect will get worked out as time goes on. I brought my 5 year old back on a separate occasion to do the Make your Own chocolate Bar deal, but the cashier said something about it having just shut down or something, SUPER unhappy kiddo! The chocolate is fanciful and delicious. I do wonder where they come up their whimsical ideas. OMG, I want to move to Floyd, VA just to be close to this wonderful shop. Husband and wife make the handcrafted chocolates which are exceptional. We tried the mint chocolate -- with the mint having been just harvested from their garden -- and I must say I've never tasted anything like it, and I've eaten a LOT of chocolate. It was the true taste of mint which I know can be overpowering for some people but this was as fresh as you can get it. The owner was so kind, offering us tastes of this and that and we discovered some new treasures. One was a goat milk dark chocolate bar which pairs so well with red wine that it must be named a new food group. Cocoa Mia also had fresh made fudgesicles which were divine on a hot, hot day. Most boutique chocolate shops are "expensive" when compared to pedestrian chocolate but Cocoa Mia was not outrageous, and the uniqueness of their products certainly makes the price worthwhile. We will definitely make a special trip to Cocoa Mia whenever our travels take us anywhere close to Floyd. read more
