They originally could only give us an 8 pm reservation but we were able to change to 7 pm which is much more preferable as we'd have an early start in the morning. Nicely decorated dining room and we had a variety of local dishes to share. First time we tried pimento peppers and they were super delicious. Also first time had the Portuguese "flan" which is not like what you might think of flans are like - not looking the same and certainly not taste the same - per our guide they make it with lard (!!), just the mere thought of it would turn me away. Tried it anyway and have to say not a fan and something to avoid in future. It's mushy and limp with color of dark brown sugar. Other than that the rest of the dishes were interesting so overall it was a good meal in a nice environment.

Side note: the stuffed crab has an interesting (nutty) flavour - I'm glad I tried it, but not sure it was worth the cost.

It was late September when we visited and it was one of the few colder, rainy nights so we had to sit inside. However the dining area is open, warm, bright and immaculate. We started with the cod cakes and sauteed mushrooms for starters. The cakes are not the traditional Portuguese cod fritter, they were lightly crisp and delicate and the mushrooms were rich and firm. We selected a Duro valley red (Quinta dos Castle Ares) which we loved. I selected their Black pork loin end which had a side of a vegetable lasagna, my wife had the Black pork cheek in plum sauce with chestnuts and greens (see photos). I regret that I did not write down the Portuguese names of the dishes. But both main courses were complex and satisfying. For vegetarians, I believe they offer the veg lasagna as a separate dish, and have other veg friendly options. Fore desert we split the chocolate mouse, my wife had port and I had (..two..) Beirão. It was the first time I had tried that specialty and now I am a fan. The service was excellent. We were attended properly and kindly and if there was a language barrier, one of the staff who spoke English was there to help. Cafe Marinho was one of the only places open that evening and I'm glad I had the opportunity to try their food. The interior looks like a regular diner. But don't let that fool you as the food is far superior to diner food. There are 2 wait staff and they were quite helpful. Throughout dinner service, locals came in and out, so that's always a good sign. For dinner, we ordered the seafood rice and the sea bass. The menu lists prices for 1/2 portions and full portions. The 1/2 portion is more than enough for a single person. The waiter stated that the seafood rice would take 30 minutes to make, but it was completely worth it. The seafood rice was so delicious. The rice is hidden underneath a seafood broth and it just soaks it all up, making the rice very tender. Inside the pot are generous helpings of clams, mussels, shrimp (various sizes), and imitation crab. The sea bass was a whole fish that was perfectly cooked. It was tender on the inside but crispy on the outside. It wasn't over-seasoned, so you can definitely taste the delicate flavors of the fish. It comes with perfectly boiled potatoes and boiled vegetables. I was stuffed and it cost only €25. Cafe Marinho is a hidden gem that produces excellent food for an affordable price. I highly recommend it.
