There's a lot of great food in Porto and especially for the price, Nogueira was just okay. Service was pretentious. I don't plan to return.

But this is not the reason to screw tourists to pay €5.50 per one tiny small piece of bread. When you order one order of bread and butter and they bring you four. You screwed four times. The place was busy with guests and our server was nice, but a bit overwhelmed. It looked like they had too many tables to be serving to give the level of service they thought they were giving from a management perspective. We asked about the recommendations on their beef choices and our server tried her best to explain them. We opted for the T-Bone for two with grilled vegetables and mashed potatoes. The steak came and was beautiful. It was massive and pre-sliced off the bone-a nice touch. But as we made it through the steak, there was an inordinate amount of fat and especially gristle versus the meat for a T-Bone. What looked like it should be a "10" ended up being about a four. As for the side dishes, the mashed potatoes were truffled. I don't know if that was for panache or just because the spuds were kind of bland. The grilled vegetables were practically swimming in oil- so much so that you had difficulty putting your fork in some as they slipped away. There were no salads listed on the menu and I had to actually ask if there were any to be had. The server say there were and I ordered one that was nice. But I think (as I've seen in some Portuguese eateries) they downplay the salads because they'd rather not deal with them a la lazy. There were many other menu selections to be tried, but I didn't return for a second try. My impression was that they thought more of themselves than maybe they should and it probably applied to other entrees, etc as well.

After having drinks and appetizers on the water and striking out at another riverfront restaurant,…read morewe decided to check out Mescla. Situated on the side of a hilly street, this beautiful, modernly decorated restaurant had its doors open all across and had a great vibe. We were informed they didn't have any open tables, but we were free to sit at the bar and wait for one while we enjoyed a drink, so we did. No less than 10 minutes later, a table opened up. The menu is divided into appetizers, small plates, and entrees. I chose two appetizers as my meal (spicy pulled pork and yuca fries with aioli mayo). My companion got the Picanha (sliced beef), which had super interesting flavors: thinned-out refried beans, a puree that had bananas in it (we're unsure what else it was mixed with), and roasted veggies. My pulled pork was super moist and flavorful and came with these corn bread-style cakes. I could do without the corn bread cakes but the pulled pork was exquisite and not spicy despite it saying so on the menu. The staff was fantastic and customer service is their jam. Everyone who walked in was greeted and told of the dining options. Rarely did we see someone walk away. Everyone opted to have a drink at the bar while they waited for a table. Highly recommend Mescla!
