I am a proud parent of two young children that attend Cliff Valley School. I find the pre-K…read moreprogram to be a warm and loving environment that is fully entrenched in the child directed learning approach. This thoroughly researched approach is a wonderful advantage because although there is a curriculum, it's nice to have freedom to expand upon something that is important to the students, which in turn, excite their learning even more. My son, in the pre-K program for two years, is moving on to Kindergarten this year with happy anticipation. I believe the success of any school can be measured when a child truly wants to go to school to find what subjects he or she will learn that day and in turn, can't wait to share their learning successes with me, the parent. At an early learning stage, I believe you cannot ask of any school for more than instilling a desire to learn which hopefully will follow them throughout their education. I noticed the previous reviewer mentioning the age range of students in Pre-K as a negative. Actually, a mixed age classroom of 3.5-5 years old is advantageous as it fosters leadership in the older children and allows the younger children to model behaviors and learn some skills at a faster pace from the older children. This is a learning method that many successful schools have incorporated into their preschool programs and many Montessori programs offer the same design as well. I am happy with the efforts put forth by Cliff Valley School and the results seen in my children; therefore, I would encourage any parent to consider Cliff Valley for their child's education

After 9th grade, when my public school became so violent and overcrowded that it was no longer…read moresafe, I got sent to Paideia. My 3 years here were the best years of my entire educational career - including college and grad school! This place really is the most amazing school ever. I remember my first day just like it was yesterday. I was accompanied by one of my best friends, who was also making the big switch to a more civilized school. We sat in front of the bathrooms for like 10 minutes trying to figure out which one was for boys and which was for girls. Turned out you just use whichever one is open! In addition to just being an awesome environment, where you are accepted for being whoever you are, Paideia has a great curriculum. The year is divided into short and long terms. In the long terms, you take the standard stuff - physics, math, languages, etc. The short term is for classes that are a little more outside the box - Sociology of American Rock & Roll anyone? The teachers here are absolutely outstanding! You can totally tell that they love the school and truly believe in it's mission. And Paul, the headmaster, is just an all around great guy. Graduation was awesome. My graduating class was 57 people and Paul made a short speech about every single one of us! I am so thankful that I was able to go to Paideia on a scholarship. I regularly give them money so that others can do so as well. I am also backing them in their efforts to take over the whole block! Go Paideia!

My children and I love Henderson Mill Elementary. I'll try to detail specifically why:…read more 1. Academics, of course. A. As the first STEM-certified elementary school in Georgia, HMES has a strong focus in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This is implemented in a variety of ways, including a weekly science class, LEGO engineering projects, a student-produced morning news program, a trout-hatchery program with field trips to release the small fry into the Chattahoochee, and coding in the classroom, among many other opportunities. B. Literacy is also a strong focus, using the Fountas & Pinnell system (the gold standard) and with small group tutoring every morning before school starts. Students read both fiction and non-fiction, integrating other acedemic fields into their literacy learning. My children are consistently challenged, but have also received support when they have needed it. C. Homework is a little more intensive than neighboring schools, but is age-appropriate and better prepares students for their experience in middle school. 2. Daily P.E. I can't overstate the importance of this. Every child from Kindergarten to 5th Grade has quality exercise every day. They run laps and do squat thrusts (aka burpees.) The exercise does amazing things for their focus during class and their happiness in general. They also have 15-20 minutes of recess daily. 3. The arts. The full-time music and art teachers are phenomenal in their fields, seeing each student once a week. They also work with the science teacher to implement STEAM Wednesdays, in which the children work on projects incorporating the arts into the STEM fields through innovative projects. 4. Title I. Henderson Mill is a Title I school, which means that it receives federal funds due to the proportion of its children who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. These funds are primarily used to pay the salaries of additional excellent teachers, which helps keep class sizes small and provides that additional academic support. Serving children from a wide array of backgrounds, the school does a fantastic job of supporting and engaging all of its students. 5. The students. Henderson Mill has an amazingly diverse population of students from all over the world. A wide variety of cultures and backgrounds are represented, providing children with the opportunity to learn from one another. I've heard from high school students that this early interaction leads to a better, more integrated experience in the later grades than students from less diverse schools encounter. 6. The culture. Henderson Mill Elementary is an amazing place for children to grow up. It's the kind of place where, following a weeknight event, after the students and most parents have gone home, employees linger happily because they love it there. Children pick up on that and think of the school as a happy place. The teachers, the staff, the administration -- the more you get to know them, the better and better they get. The smiles are contagious. I kinda can't believe I spent this long writing a Yelp review for a public school, but that should illustrate how much I love the place.
