My nephew, Joey, lives about 35 mins away. This now his favorite beach. Pretty empty all things considered. Lots of dogs frolicking. Leashes required (on the dogs). My best friend, Josie the Whale, loved the water. When he waded in, it seemed to raise the ocean level. If you look closely, you can see Hawaii in the distance. I don't even have a dog but I love coming here just to see all of the dogs living their best life on the beach! Parking over on this end of the beach is typically not that bad either but most of it is paid parking. There is plenty of space for everyone to enjoy and the water isn't too deep right there for the pups to enjoy the water as well as the sand. I can't wait to hopefully get a dog one day and take them here to enjoy all of the fun with the other pups too. read more

This is my favorite place to take the pup in the SD area. Fiesta Island is a close second, but the energy at the Del Mar Dog Beach is just so much fun! When I have gone most of the owners and dogs have been respectful. There are always one or two you have to watch out for, but for the most part each visit has been great. My dog doesn't really care about playing with other dogs, we go to play fetch. There is tons of space to run, most people don't set up blankets and chairs which is ideal so everything can be like a dog park instead of feeling worried about a ball going rogue into someone's beach set up. Parking is a little difficult on the weekends, but most street parking near the beach is that way so you already knew to expect that. We'll be back soon! read more

When your baby wants to live her best life, you take her to dog beach! Plenty of parking nearby, however be very aware of the metered parking as code enforcement is always heavy. Tickets are written furiously in such a short time span. There is a small maintained garden with flowers and succulents at the front of the beach. Whoever is in charge does a great job of changing the themes to match the current holidays. Many dedicated rocks devoted to the fur babies who have earned their wings. I love bringing my baby here to run and bask in the sun. She's a little 11 year old rescued min pin and this place gives her some youth back. Now be mindful many dogs are running off leash, so if you don't understand your own dogs temperament with others keep them close to you. The beach is very clean and other owners are pretty much friendly and respectful of the area. I could spend all day here enjoying the scene. read more

If you are in the Carlsbad or San Diego area and have dogs, I would recommend checking out this dog beach! We came in February, so dogs were allowed off leash! Parking; For sure park on vía de la Valle. It's free and the dogs can get a bit of a walk out before getting to the beach. Dog beach area: So the beach area is relatively small (compared to say rosie's beach in Long Beach), so it seems a lot more crowded. There were a lot more larger dogs when we went, so if you have small or timid dogs, just be aware. The tide was strong and high, and I have a pug and small mutt, so we tried to stay away from the water, so they wouldn't be swept away. Most owners, from what I could see, were good about watching their dogs and being attentive. There are volleyball courts and people actively playing, so something to be Aware of if you have a wandering dog. Overall great experience and would definitely come back to visit again! read more

What a treat this was to come to the beach after 3:00 pm in the Fall and the waters were still warm! We were amazed by how clear the waves were and easy it was for the dogs to roam around. Unlike other dog beaches that had still access to the street, this one had some steps to access that helps divide from traffic. So there's no opportunity for the dogs to run away from the beach into danger. My dog LOVED being on the beach and playing with people. It was great that she could go off leash and just run non stop back and forth, playing with the water. The residents in the area were nice and the parking situation is well maintained, there is paid parking required but there are plenty of spots to take. The public parking isn't that expensive either, $4 for an hour approx which is fair for how the area is maintained. Would recommend visitors to check out the beach with their dogs, it seems people come here without dogs as well as it's a chill spot to hang out and pet some doggos. read more

I've been to this beach three times now and each time I like it more and more. First off, I've mostly been on the dog beach side (I think it's called Friends beach) and we love it. Plenty of room for the puppeters to run and play! 99.9% of the dogs are off leash so if you are not into that, you should probably not bring your pup here. From what I've observed, all dogs act pretty darn good and owners are alert and responsible. There are courts for volleyball games, a big sand area, and even a small hike. Beautiful views of the ocean and rockey cliffs. Water is to be as expected, waves and higher depending on the tide. The sand by the water sparkles as if it has glitter in it. Parking is 75 cents for 30 minutes I believe. We paid 1.50 for an hour. There is also a beautiful garden with cute statues of a golden lab and other cute pups. A section with painted rocks dedicated to dogs lost. Very beautiful! We will be back again and again! read more

Yes, of you own a pooch, this is a great beach to bring them too. It's not the largest stretch of beach dedicated to owners and their dogs, but it does its due. Just make sure you are aware that you have to pay for parking on the street that is adjacent to the beach and the little parking lot on the south end of the beach as you enter a neighborhood. You can find free parking as you get into the neighborhoods. The beach offers doggy poop bags, and I think I saw one of those mobile restrooms, you know, the ones we all love to use, when we really have to go and that's all that's available. Here it is everyone a beautiful beach! Yes this small section might be listed as a beach where you can bring your dog but it's even better for us! Yes not only can you walk off the hwy onto the sand but as you walk towards the oceans edge the beautiful cliffs are a sight to see, just as you think that you can't walk any further the coast opens up and you can walk up and down the beach with the cliffs behind you and the waves in front of you! It's a quite area. So peaceful for a getaway from everyday stuff. Lay down on the sand or sit on a rock. Walk in the waters edge as you look at the beauty all around. The California brown pelicans diving into the water for a catch. When it's low tide look around the rocks for small crabs and fish. When it's high tide there's less beach as the water comes almost to the cliff. Very few people come to this location as they think it's crowded with dogs but you will be surprised to see that it's really a fantastic place to spend time walking around. If you live in CENTRAL San Diego, it's a casual 15 minute drive up north. The location is just gorgeous, it is right on the side of a pretty busy street and tucked away / hidden. Just look for the multiple volleyball court set-up(s) and you found it! PARKING: So for everyone saying, park here, park there to avoid the fee's...unfortunately for me, I am not picking up that hidden message because I have never been able to find/locate what this secret parking spot is lol. I just bust out the coins $$$$ baby and get myself a parking ticket and park wherever I find a spot on the one way road. GOTTA PAY TO PLAY! It aint worth the ticket. I see many people getting parking citations lol. Get yourself a pass, throw it on the dash, booms.. No Luck? Make a U-TURN eventually and drive up the other side, you'll find a spot. It's all parallel parking. Trust me. It's not a far walk once you park, which is why this ranks our favorite dog park. You don't have to walk miles or on hot sand or pavement *PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG ANYWHERE WHERE THEY HAVE TO WALK IN BROAD DAYLIGHT ABOVE 75 DEGREE WEATHER ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN GRASS FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME* SO this is a huge plus for us, you park and you're literally RIGHT there in the action. CLEANLINESS: No problem for us, however, the bag's are way at the start where you park so once you're deep into the beach, you probably wont wanna to get a bag. DOG POPULATION: It's a MIX, not separated. Big, Small, We love them all! JUST DO NOT BRING YOUR REACTIVE or "FRIENDLY" dog that we all know is really not friendly, you aint fooling anyone and no one likes a dog that does not know how to play right - BE RESPONSIBLE AS AN OWNER SEATING: No seating for the Paw-rents. However, PACK your chairs, pack your picnic blanket, your towels, your umbrella and post up anywhere. This is why I love this beach so much. So many spots to just pick and unpack!! SHADE: Only under the BRIDGE is there shade, which it states "DO NOT CROSS OVER THE BRIDGE OR UNDER THE BRIDGE ETC" something like that. We spent a week in San Diego for a stay-cation. It was a week long vacation for our dogs to visit every dog-friendly spot we could go to. From paddle boarding in Liberty Station to Del Mar we loved everything. The ending highlight being Del Mar North Beach. It's super clean -- after the week of going to numerous beaches, it was definitely one of the cleanest ones we went to. It was pretty empty but we went around 10am and my dogs had plenty of fun running around since the beach is pretty large. Most dogs were friendly and we only encountered one not-so-friendly dog which isn't bad. Also, another rad thing is that the dog wash is just down the street. read more

Lovely dog beach! My golden really loved it here. We are from Los Angeles so anytime we go to a dog beach over there, the waves break hard and gets steep really fast so a little tougher on her. This beach is perfect because there is a lot of shallow water with the inlet and was able to interact with her a lot more - she also was more comfortable and fully enjoying herself! For the type of crowd, everyone was generally really nice (no weird people/assholes) kept space, watched their own dogs. Totally recommend! First time at this beach and it was so nice and clean! I recommend going at low tide so you can walk all the way down to the lifeguard station. I absolutely love this dog beach. I would go so far as to say it is my favorite dog beach in San Diego. The dogs are super friendly, the environment is stimulating for the dogs and there is SO much space for your pupper to run. I brought my puppy, Lyra, here and she had a blast. She is a mid to small size dog with a slight fear of water so I like to bring her here to get comfortable with the beach water since the San Diegito River meets which is calm. I don't have anything against the Ocean Beach Dog park, but the parking situation gets crazy and it's a smaller beach. If you and your pup have some time, make your way up to Del Mar Dog Beach. In my Top 5 Places to take my dogs in San Diego! I stayed in Del Mar during my last vacation, and this Dog Beach was only a 10 minute drive from the hotel. It features a Rock formation you can climb on and around, a clean beach, volleyball nets, and water bowls for you Pup. I was lucky enough to go to this Beach during this season since it is OFF-LEASH currently! I read the signs and others posting that they do not allow this during the Summer? Such a bummer.. Also, if you park on the street, make sure you feed the meter! The meter control are constantly out and looking to get you. Bastards! It isn't convenient to go back and forth from the beach to the car so I added 3hrs from the get-go each time and was safe. I recommend stopping by with or without your dogs! A nice beach either way. Love this beach! My dog absolutely loves trotting around and splashing in the water. It's always clean and I love that there are amenities specifically for dogs. The tubs of water to wash off their sandy paws, the water fountains so they can drink fresh water, and the cute little garden you can walk through. My only complaint is that the summer months when the dogs need cool water the most, they make you keep your dog leashed for the tourists enjoyment. Beautiful and peaceful dog beach! Decided to try this beach after Ocean Beach was too crazy for my dog, and Coronado was also pretty packed. Compared to those, this beach felt nearly empty! I did check the tides before driving over, which was very helpful. I can see how at high tide, there would be a lot less beach to enjoy. My dog did not mind staying on leash at all, and there was lots of room at low tide to go for a lengthy walk. This is a great option if your dog enjoys walks on the beach vs. playing off leash in the water. Only downside is parking -- you just have to find a spot on the side of a busy road and there are parking meters. However, not the end of the world and my dog overall really enjoyed this beach! read more

Beware of aggressive dog owners, not dogs!!! I went there with my children and my 11 month old black lab, who is pretty friendly and well behaved. I put my dog on leash when the lifeguard told me the rule. I walked around to socialize with other dogs, when I was verbally threatened by a dog owner for my puppy barely jumping on her. Her and her husband were so rude, repeatedly threatened me and my kids to leave and tried to hit my dog! My Lilah was not aggressive AT ALL!!! She couldn't have been happier to run in the water-used to being off leash normally! I would expect more from fellow dog owners. Beware of this kind of harassment. Lifeguard was sympathetic but couldn't do much. The first time I went I didn't have any issues when off leash was allowed. If you don't like dogs, why are you at dog beach and acting like a crazed lunatic!? I am so infuriated! read more

After labor day through June 15th is off season which means the dogs can go off leash. Lots of cute dogs running in and out of water chasing each other or toys. Friendly dogs and owners. The water gets deep really fast near the bridge area. There is no wash off station. There is a little water fountain in the cute garden when you start walking toward the beach from the parking area. My pup's ultimate favorite place. Beats any dog park any day! The off leash area is from Del Mar, and extends to a bit of Solana beach. It can get quite busy here, because it is a beach but visitors are still able to physically distance. My pup likes playing in the water, chasing the ball in the sand, jumping on the big rocks, or running after other dogs. There is no division between big and small dog areas but typically I have found the dogs to be friendly here. Especially the larger dogs. I think it is because there is so much going on in regards to dogs, humans, and nature, my small pup can play unbothered. Humans like me love coming here to not only watch my pup enjoy himself, but also because the views of the sun rising or falling are picturesque. Paid parking is along the main entrance from Del mar dog beach (across the street from Brigantine), but there are plenty of free parking near residential areas. read more

Brought Linus to Dog beach for the 1st time today and he loved it! Well technically the other side because I couldn't find parking! Ughh... the side where it's not attached to the beach shore. Anyhoo that's my fault because I didn't get out of the house early enough- mid morning on a Sat is peak time here apparently :( but docking 1star for not enough parking. He wasn't sure about the sand at first, and when we took him off leash he looked at me like" I get to be free here?" I said "Go" and he let loose, like a deer frolicking in a meadow! Lol We could have walked along the bridge to be with all the other dogs but #1 he was all ready happy to be at the beach and #2 I was kinda lazy truthfully probably annoyed-maybe even feeling anti-social because of my inpatient-ness of my parking situation- haha. Del Mar Dog Beach (official name is North Beach) in Del Mar stretches from 29th street to Solano beach. By the name, you probably figured that it is a beach that allows dogs. Ya! But, yes there is a big ole but. But dogs are required to be leashed from June 16th "through" Labor Day. The leash should be 6 feet or less. After Labor Day to June 16th, they can be unleashed to be carefree and run with abandon. Part of the beach merges with the San Dieguito River. But looks can be deceiving, the water over there may look calm but can have strong currents and drops. Also near the inlet were several sand volleyball courts. it is a bring your own net situation. Plus parking is not free, kinda pricing. read more
