An open space park just steps from the water. Lots of room to exercise or relax and even have a picnic. A great spot to start or finish your day. Paid parking is close by and it's reasonably priced. Be sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat plus something to drink. read more

We love going to this park and love that it's dog friendly depending on the time of year. Always check beforehand. That being said the park and the beach are always very clean and I've never found them too crowded, even on the weekend. The only downside is parking. We've had to drive around for quite a bit to find free parking in the neighborhoods but they do have some paid parking lots that are closer. read more

My friend Sandra always tells me we are Delmarians by adoption and the Powerhouse Park is our backyard...only that we don't live in Del Mar but this was been for months our meeting point for beach walks. This is an amazing open grassy space where you can enjoy summer concerts every Tuesday of August, you can have amazing picnics where you are invited just because you passed by and smile to the people setting it up, where you meet interesting characters and a lot of beautiful people. There are showers to clean the sand from the beach and very clean bathrooms. The sunsets from here are amazing. read more

I spent a half day in the Del Mar area and very much enjoyed exploring this beach and park. Its gorgeous and wasnt too crazy packed and had something for everyone. I love that the park is raised higher up and some walkways built so it made it accessible to everyone. I sat down on a bench to enjoy the ocean views and was able to share my bench with a family and one person was in a wheelchair. I liked the thoughtfulness of this park. Everyone was just enjoying the beautiful weather, some having a picnic, others sunbathing, some reading. There were also plenty of people on the beach but not crowded. Lots of surfers and just everybody getting their dose of the best medicine in the world: sunshine, nature and water!! Many flowers already in bloom, so saw fields of purples and yellows and it made my heart sing! Also lots of birds here, little ones and big ones too. The gulls are very beautiful and totally not afraid of humans. Parking I could see could be a disaster here but I did find easy free 2 hour parking on the street. There are also lots and metered parking available too. I didnt get in the water today but Im preparing and when it gets just a tad bit warmer, I am definitely headed into the ocean! Nice to have beach access but also sit up top overlooking the ocean. There's a coastal trail and street parking (metered paid to the city) and paid lot parking. read more

Been here 2x now for a kids birthday party. There's a lawn next to the playground and kids can run free and play on the playground as well. The train coming by is a play. My son loves the train! There's a bathroom near the restaurant, and walking trails. I like the grassy area because you don't have to get sand every where. One thing here is the parking, since it's next to "downtown" Del Mar, it's quite busy. Super hard to get parking near the park and beach. You have to park in the neighborhood and take a walk, or try parking in the busy downtown area which is 2 hours only. The meter person comes around and chalk your tires. Took us 30 minutes to find parking this time. Not the best. read more

Powerhouse Park and Beach in Del Mar is one best to visit. Parking is a challenge if you can't get lucky with street parking, there's a meter parking lot a block away. This park is popular with locals with all it offers: green lawn with knolls, an open clubhouse for activities and the beach. No street vendors, little tourists, but lots of families, kids and dogs all coexisting having fun. My pup enjoys exploring this park, but doesn't like crowds of people, so she walks a few feet away, across the train track to Seagrove Park, another favorite. Both parks are well maintained and clean. Most people do respect the area and keep it litter free. What a gorgeous beach + park! Came across this beauty while exploring Del Mar. Lovely, expansive grassy knoll for picnicking and several benches to sit on and enjoy views of the ocean. The beach itself is a dream - soft white sand, clean, gorgeous coastline. I enjoyed watching surfers here as well. The ocean sound and breeze is peaceful and healing. It is walkable from the Del Mar Village Main Street which has lots of coffee shops and restaurants. Plenty of metered street parking around if you're driving. read more

RAIN OR SHINE i really like this park/beach. It's elevated over the ocean, close to restaurants and shops, yet secluded to locals or those "in the area". There is street parking and some are metered until 10pm. There is a lot right across with fair prices of 0-2hr for $10, 0-4hrs for $15, etc and I felt it my car was more safe in the lot rather than open narrow streets. The grassy area slants like a hill and overlooks the beach and Ocean. Perfect for sunsets! Very cool when events are hosted here. They hosted a music-mindtravel-experience. Think of "Silent Disco" but instead of club music and dancing it was a live "Silent Piano" performance and more of mind traveling and meditation. Rain or shine, the experience was worth it and I felt the location was PERFECT. People came bundled up (it's the cold Spring weather of rain, wind, and then some sunshine), blankets sprawled out, some chairs folded out. It was best to not be in a chair and laying on the ground - closer to the ground less wind factor. This place is so peaceful when tourists haven't invaded the area or it's not summer time. You will see a lot of locals walking the area with their dogs and minding their business. read more

So you found yourself at the beach with your kiddos and they don't seem all too pleased with the blistering winds, roaring waves, or the freezing water? Yep, been there but no fret, just up the hill, you'll find Powerhouse Park and Beach where you and your little ones will enjoy a diverse play structure, grassy fields, a moderately clean sand area, and a great view (and ear shot) of the commuter trains every 10 minutes or so. With a beautiful view of the ocean and a constant breeze of fresh air, it's a perfect spot to relax and accompany your child in play. The playground area has a few different modalities including swings, slides, climbing structures, riding structures, and a sand box. For the sand area, you may want to bring your own toys for building sand castles, digging or transferring. Otherwise you can use your hands but the sand may be littered with tree branches and debris due to the proximity to overhanging trees which do end up providing a good amount of shade, too. Parking may be a bit difficult as it's only street parking and the surrounding area seems to be pretty packed. You may find some spots a few blocks away so if it's the playground you're aiming for, then it shouldn't be a problem as you would likely be traveling light. However, if you plan to share time between the beach and park, you may want to consider dropping off the beach gear before parking further away. Overall, it's a unique park in that it oversees the whole beach front and is well maintained and visited by locals. Sharing space with an open field, it's a great place to gather and picnic (assuming the grass isn't wet from rain). There's also access to restrooms near the Powerhouse building (you may learn some history if you look it up), which makes this a convenient location for quick park outings or even in conjunction with a beach day. read more

It's very clean water, bathrooms clean, and I've always had a great time here. the sand is fine and you can see some sea creatures in the sand. no tide pools but plenty of sand, plenty of calm waters. The waters come up real far up the beach so they leave a small film of water which is nice to walk on. parking at this time was 20 an hour . read more

Powerhouse Park sits at one of the lowest points along the beach in Del Mar. It is great for sitting, walking, enjoying a sunset, having a picnic, or just watching the Pacific Ocean ... or having some fun in it. We've also enjoyed outdoor concerts here in past years. Powerhouse Park and Beach gets its name from the structure that was originally the powehouse for the Stratford Inn (where L'Auberge Del Mar is today). The huge boilers in the building built in 1928 supplied hot water for the pool, the hotel and its cottages, and the hotel's laundry. Today it is the Powerhouse Community Center, which can be rented for special private events year-round. Parking here is its major shortcoming. Street parking fills up quickly, especially in the summer. There's a pay car park across the street, as well as metered parking along Coast Blvd. Public restrooms rooms are available in the Community Center. read more

I gave it a three star because the location is beautiful by the beach the place can use a little facelift...but it was a nightmare to deal with the ladies that run it! First of all they don't give you enough time to set up because they open at 12:00 second the person that was there supervising was all over us.. about what you do how you do things it was pretty uncomfortable navigate with her on top of us! Also you needed certificates for all the vendors which can be pricey... We're grateful that we pulled it off but she was always complaining about the DJ my DJ felt very uncomfortable about her.. the place is not cheap and to have to pay this much money and deal with this many issues it's not worth it find a different location ..!!!! read more

Del Mar's Powerhouse Park & Beach is one of the most beautiful accessible beaches in California. A sandy coastal shoreline divides ocean waves washing over a large reef formation from grassy fields above. It is a magical place with activities for everyone. I could ramble on and on just gushing about Powerhouse Park. I love almost everything about this beach, especially the following: A large grassy field which is used for concerts, weddings and picnics with a trail meandering around it and plenty of benches. A modern playground to keep the kiddos happy while the adults enjoy a panoramic view which extends all the way to La Jolla. A sandy beach perfect for taking walks, surfing, swimming, whale watching or beach games. At Powerhouse, everything is immaculately maintained and easy to access. The restrooms are clean, the lifeguards are friendly and it is a perfect place to spend the day. You really can not go wrong, the only challenge is parking. This is no hidden gem, Del Mar is a seaside resort for the rich and famous and this legendary beach is a well known local treasure. At the top of the hill is a large patch of grass, where you'll find tons of beach-goers sunbathing, picnicking, and getting active! Along the grass sits an event space, and two local eateries - Jake's and Poseidon. If you continue to the bottom of the hill you'll stumble upon the white sand of Powerhouse beach! This beach is lined with gorgeous homes and plenty of space for activities - frisbee, anyone? I know the racetrack is where they say the surf meets the turf, but that saying is probably better represented at PowerHouse Park & Beach. Beautiful patches of grass lead all the way up to the sand and so you don't really have to choose which type of picnic you want to have here. It's the best of both worlds for where you want to spread out a blanket and chill for a few hours. They keep it immaculately clean as they should. It's a serene view and I really can't think of too many places better to catch a sunset. There's always surf schools, bbq's, and a bunch of other stuff to just sit and watch while you feel the cool ocean breeze on your face. I have been to two events here. One a wedding and one a memorial. Powerhouse park lends itself for both. It's a nice rec center on the beach with a nice big patio. If the weather is nice (let's face it weather usually is nice here) you have a breathtaking view. The last event which was a memorial paddle out was held here a few weeks ago and there were 100s of people there but it never felt too crowded. It flows quite nicely. Even with a catering set up, a band and a bar there was plenty of room. And nice clean bathrooms. Also has TVs in case you have guests that don't want to miss a game. =) The only issue is parking. Especially in the summer months. Parking is a premium in Del Mar and if you are not lucky enough to find free street parking expect to pay $30-40 bucks to park in the lot. If it wasn't for that this would be a 5 star place for sure. read more

Very nice beach, but walkways aren't super accessible-- there are big slanted concrete ramps down to the surf that I had trouble walking down as an able-bodied person. Everything else was fine though: close bathrooms and restaurants, and a nice big grassy lawn as well as lots of benches to relax on if you don't want to go in the sand or water. Plenty of trash cans to make cleaning up after yourself a breeze, and it's fun to watch all the surfers. read more

Breathtaking... Literally a place on this earth where any picture you take makes you feel like your a professional photographer. This is Beach is HUGE... Very wide and it really never feels busy because of its size. There's even a huge grassy area where you can have a picnic or big gathering just off the beach. It's also right next to several restaurants. Jake's and The Poseidon. Both great choices and are right on the beach. Local shops are close too... What a luxury to have a wedding ceremony at such a beautiful location. At the waters edge, the bride and groom exchanged their vows as the sun set behind them. Fairytale! Not only is the beach a perfect backdrop for photos, but the vast lawn along side the shore is great too! The cocktail reception was perfect under the pergola and the reception hall was inviting, comfortable and quaint. My only critique for future guests is the $25-$35 parking fee if you can't find street availability. read more

I thought this park was pretty cool! Green grass for those that hate the sand getting everywhere (my friend said lots of high school girls come here for tanning), and lots of people picknicking about even on a Monday. Kai said usually it's completely packed w blankets, and hard to find a place to chill. There's something for everyone here - fathers playing racketball with their kids, people tanning, couples having picnic barbecues. What a beautiful park! We came here with a large group luncheon/BBQ. You have to come early to get the perfect spot since real estate is super limited. There is no shade really, so bring your own. You would just have to trek it from your car to your spot and vice versa. There are nearby restrooms, but can get busy with the crowds. What I enjoyed the most is that there was a little walking dirt path that was next to our picnic spot. Nice place to take photos as well. There is a parking lot across the way, but you have to pay buco bucks. I think I paid almost $30 for about 4 hours. Expensive! read more

This park is really neat. There's jakes next door so u can get totally ripped for happy hour off mai tais and just stumble to a bench to watch the sunset as u start to nod off and catch your second wind for late night rounds of booze. Fortunately I was slightly sober enough to stumble back to the meter to put money in so the Man couldn't ticket my ride. Just an FYI if u valet at jakes u only have to pay $5, the meter is $3 an hour, I'm not the best at math but I think 5 is better than 3...so just keep that in mind when u aren't c walkin to this choice spot We were really lucky because as we were starting to fade from getting totally smashed 15 minutes prior, an old dude strolled by with his alpha female dog that leads him from spot to spot. He sat down and had a long talk to us about how the green flash happens right before sunset. It's really rare not only to meet this famous dog leashing warrior but he also informed us that the green flash in that spot only happens on rare occasions. He whispered very quietly that he can create a green flash with his powerful mind once a month, but that he had already used it up for the particular month we were there. Luckily that day we didn't need his superpowers though as we saw the green flash! After the sun faded and we were starting to sober up, he just vanished into the night never to be seen again. The magic was gone, but if u happen to come to this spot u might just meet him and his alpha female canine with his powers intact to show u the magic of a green flash sunset. I actually did take a photo of him in panoramic view with my huge iPhone 6+, but he cannot be photographed!! I uploaded the image but he doesn't appear in the photo, like I said u just have to be very lucky to run into him,and he can only be seen in the flesh, try and take a photo with him and see what happens!! read more
