I came for brunch with a group and I ordered from express brunch menu -- tuna tartare, crab Benedict, and ice cream sandwich. The tuna was wonderful, would order again and again. The ice cream sandwich was interesting but slightly too big as it was melting before I'd had more than two bites. The Benedict I had high hopes for but sadly the crab was minimal and very, very burnt (as you can see in the photo--the dark mass). I ended up just pulling the small bits out and eating the rest on its own. I would rate my experience 3.5 stars. The service was good. There was a bit of a gap where I was asked if I wanted another glass of cava, I said yes, and then waited for around 20 minutes--with an empty glass and the bottle in a bucket next to me, it was a little odd it wasn't poured upon me saying yes. Also, upon tasting, there was a very foul odor to the cava. The server did provide a fresh glass, but to wait that long, then to wait another 15 or so minutes to grab the servers attention to tell them meant I had a near full glass as everyone was ready to head out the door. Ate here with Steven on my 24th birthday and our waiter was putting down with the hospitality! Ensured that we had a shared understanding of the menu and provided recommendations based on what he learned about our preferences, restrictions, etc. Staff even got me a little baby birthday cake, but awkward because no singing done at all. They just lit the candle and watched me lolol I like that the restaurant is by the water because you could watch the sun set. The photos reveal that we were here for a couple of hours because it progressively becomes more dim with the lighting. There was no rush for us to finish because our waiter made clear that there is no limit on how long we could be at the table. Food was great! Steven loved it more than I did, but I liked it, too. It was absolutely filling, even after our seafood tower as our first order. Recommend that you look on Reddit what they are known for because I forgot exactly what Steven ordered for us, but all really good selections that played a lot with seasoning combinations. Very good representation of Spanish cuisine. The service was excellent and tentative. Serious bar menu with many exotic cocktails. Nice wine list. We ordered the croquette appetizer, Red Snapper, Branzino, Artichoke and Potato Bravos. The artichoke dish was amazing, the fish perfectly prepared, maintaining the tender flakey texture with a hard sear on the skin. For those not accustomed to DC $$$$prices, will suffer from shock. The quality and experience are well worth the drain on your bank account. Reservation highly recommended. Management should revisit the recipes and spend time on proper development. The pricing suggests creativity and execution that simply are not reflected in the dishes. What we ordered: Andalusian Garlic Shrimp - The best thing we ate. Good flavor and the only dish that felt well executed. Crispy Potatoes Bravas - We sent this back. It was literally potatoes with sauce poured on top. No seasoning. Completely unacceptable for a dish that simple. Blue Crab Stuffed Piquillo Peppers - Just okay. Only two pieces were served, and the sauce pairing could have been much better. Grilled Wild Calamari - The pieces were the largest I have ever seen, and not in a good way. Located at the Wharf in Southwest Washington, DC, Del Mar is a 2-story - Spanish restaurant offering a variety of small-plate dishes in a beautiful waterfront setting. Our office booked a private dining room, and the experience itself was wonderful. Del Mar has gorgeous views, attentive and professional service from our server, and a great atmosphere for a group gathering. The food was flavorful and well-prepared, the drinks were tasty, and everything we tried was genuinely delicious. That said, the portions were quite small for the price point. While I enjoyed the meal, I left feeling that the cost didn't quite match what was served, especially for a luncheon. My sangria was completely overpriced. I stopped by Del Mar for the three-course express lunch in the middle of the week and was seated right away. The tuna tartare appetizer was great and opened up my appetite. My second course was the Donostiarra-style lubina, which smelled and tasted fantastic, but was smaller than expected. They were out of the hazelnut "stracciatella" ice cream bar, so I settled for the lemon cookie ice cream bar for dessert and it was refreshing. From the start, the event coordinator was cold, disengaged, and frankly not someone who should be client-facing. The room itself was elegant, and I brought my own tablecloth and decor to add a festive touch, which tells you something. The menu included an appetizer, a choice of entrée, and dessert. The chicken dish was completely forgettable. The portions were shockingly small for the price, and our group of 7-8 people left genuinely hungry after spending nearly $550 close to $65 per person. Wow, it's been five years after my last review! Been back couple times this year, and it's still a solid place after all of these years at the Wharf. I highly recommend making a reservation though they do have bar seating. The menu has gotten smaller compared to years past, but the food quality is still good as ever. Focus is still on seafood, so if you are looking for the typical Spanish tapas, I would stick with Jaleo. Their signature dish is paella, so I would recommend the seafood paella. Some other favorites are: Andalusian Garlic Shrimp, Grilled Wild Calamari, Cinco Jotas Jamon Imberico and Jamon Croquetas. This place isn't cheap, so expect to spend some $$$. I've visited Del Mar over a half dozen times over the years and I can say I've had pretty consistent experiences. Is it a bit overpriced? Sure. But it's pretty on par with what to expect at the Wharf. I've sat on the patio, grabbed dinner inside and have had drinks at the bar. Sometimes, it seems like service is actually better when it's not slow (which I know is counterintuitive.) But typically if I'm at the Wharf, I prefer a week day to avoid crowds. During my last visit I grabbed some food and sat at the bar. Service was meh but the food was delicious as always. My go to dish is the pulpo - always gotta grab that while I'm there. Recently though I also tried the caviar bites and was surprised by how flavorful and delicious those were as well! I went to Del Mar last week for a corporate event. Note, that the restaurant is in the Wharf so parking might be a bit expensive and/or hard to find. Huge caveat: we had a set menu so I didn't get to experience the full menu. We had the choice between the chicken ot the fish for our main entree. I chose the Mediterranean Sea Bass with the Spanish ratatouille-style roasted veggies. I was very surprised when it came out that the sea bass itself did not look well seasoned. When I took a bite, I was able to confirm that the fish needed more seasoning. The roasted veggies were sitting on top of the fish. I tried to use them to eat it together in hopes of adding more flavor however it didn't help. I was unimpressed. However, the restaurant itself was gorgeous and the service was great. I highly enjoyed my drink, Olé olé. It was such a yummy drink that my coworkers also ended up getting it as well. I came here for an event thrown by a dear friend of mine. While it wasn't a regular dining experience I gave them a 5 for their handling of such a large group. The event was on the top floor of the Del Mar.m and it was gorgeous. I love the random accents and styling overall. There was an indoor and outdoor space which was nice but it was so hot that day I couldn't enjoy it. They had curated menus for drinks, starters and entrees. I had: Caesar Salad: 10/10 - hard to ruin a salad but they didn't and that is worth the score. Their Caesar dressing was really good too and it wasn't over done. Snapper: 10/10 - if this is on their actual menu I need to come back and have the full entree. It was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. Cheesecake: 6/10 - not my fav, something about the texture was off and it wasn't cold enough for me. The fruit was fresh though. Signature drink: 10/10 - I wish I could remember what it was but it was delicious (I have to write my reviews sooner). There were two drink options but I stuck with this through the event. Parking at the wharf is awful but if you don't mind a bit of a walk there's parking by a church just north of there. Otherwise you'll dealing with the garages which is easily $30+. Starters we tried: - Gazpacho - quite refreshing, great flavor, would order again! - Stone Fruit Salad - delicious, fresh cheese grated on top and the peaches with the dressing. Recommend - Tuna Tartare - also good especially if you like tartare All of first course felt very generous in size! Mains: - Dorade - a white flaky fish, comes skin on but easy to remove. Very happy with the dish! - Artichoke Burger - we asked if this was a burger topped with artichoke and was told yes initially, but when we went to order and asked how it was cooked (meaning rare, medium rare, etc), we understood it was no burger and just an artichoke. We still ordered it to try it. It was our least favorite dish. The bun was really good, but the ratios were quite off and definitely left you wanting something with more substance. We would not order that again if offered. - Charcoal Chicken - larger portion with both white meat and dark including the chicken foot. The chicken has great flavor and would order again. Desserts: - Orange Pound Cake was special for Restaurant Week and was a very generous size and good flavor. However the real winner when it came to dessert were the Chocolate Hazelnut Churros! Three large pieces wheat were still warm and gooey. We all said we would order these on the future! Service was very relaxed. As a longtime fan of Fabio Trabocchi's restaurants, Del Mar has been on my list for ages--and it absolutely lived up to the hype, as far as brunch goes. We came to celebrate a friend's birthday and opted for the "Brunch Like A Spaniard" tasting menu, along with the bottomless brunch drinks (which are timed at 90 minutes, just a heads-up!). The Jamón Croquetas (4) were crispy on the outside and luxuriously creamy (and hot) on the inside. Very comforting and rich. The Smoked Salmon Mollete was essentially an avocado toast: layered, and beautifully presented with a side of pickles, olives, and anchovies. And the Horchata Soft Serve was the perfect sweet finish--light, refreshing, and a touch of cinnamon. It tasted like the milk left over after a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The service was excellent--attentive without being overbearing. The server would check in on us and made sure to bring us drinks right before our time limit ended on the bottomless drinks! We wandered into Del Mar on an anniversary wharf stroll. We sat outside to people watch during lunch. What we didn't expect was the amazing experience and meal that we enjoyed. While strolling through Washington D.C. and deciding on lunch, we discovered Del Mar. It is a Spanish, Seafood, and Cocktail Bar. We ordered their Express Lunch, which is a Three Courses meal, but with a confusing set of pricing. (more on it later) We ordered their Cherry Gazpacho and Citrus Salad for starters. We also got the Verduras Paella for the main, and Churros and Homemade Cookies for dessert. The food was not bad, and prepared upon order. But the price was confusing, to say the least. We initially wanted to order one set of Express Lunch to share and get some Tapas. But they explained to us we both had to agree on the Paella, and we had to order two (2) sets of the lunch. Which I guess made sense since it stated Minimum Two People. But they failed to explain the fine print, that it will be an extra $15 per person, and you only get one (1) Paella. Conveniently right after the meal, they told us they made a mistake with our Paella? They had the whole meal to tell us, but they found out right at the end? The layout of the menu was confusing and convoluted, where some items were included, and some are not. I am trying to read a menu to order some food, not read an End User License Agreement written by a law professional. Our waiter also didn't seem to care, and spoke with a condescending attitude. Del Mar is an upscale restaurant at The Wharf that has been there since the Wharf first opened in October 2017. It's very good but also very pricey. I hadn't been to Del Mar for years, but visited again this January. DC got about six inches of snowfall, keeping people inside and slowing restaurant sales, so Del Mar ran a 50% off promotion for two days. This included both food an alcohol, a very generous offer. I jumped at the chance to try their menu again. I sat with a group of four at the front of the restaurant in an enclosed patio area. I think the main part of the restaurant was more lively, but our corner was a bit dark and subdued, with only a few tables near us and a dark, cold, empty night at the Wharf. At 6 PM, the restaurant was busy but not full; it got busier as the night went on. Service was good, appropriate for a high end restaurant. Our waiter offered a few suggestions and service was mostly prompt. They coursed out our order effectively and cleared plates between courses. They also gave us a small, complimentary amuse bouche: a few sips of butternut squash soup. We started with Jamon Croquetas (four for $22), Pan Con Tomate (two for $13), and Garlic Shrimp ($22). Then the Octopus (one long tentacle, $29), Blue Crab (two stuffed peppers, $26), and Truffle Canelones (one large piece, $26). For an entree, the small size Calamari and Chorizo Paella ($85). To finish, the Cafe con Leche 12 layer cake ($24). Many of these dishes and ingredients are classic Spanish tapas fare. If you've had them before, you know what to expect. Del Mar offered good renditions, but none wowed me. By the end, I tired a bit of all the rich flavors and sauces. The standout dish was the cake; an absolutely delicious mix of chocolate, coffee, and caramel flavors with a bit of ice cream. A few specific comments. I liked the crusty bread pieces with the shrimp that soaked up the garlic sauce. The octopus reminded me of a similar dish served at Bar Spero (RIP) that was flash fried; I wish this dish had been that dish. I was intrigued by the sea urchin sauce on the Blue Crab Peppers and the truffles in the Canelones, but I don't feel either dish really delivered on flavors. By the end of the paella, I tired of calamari; I ended up liking the rice itself best. The paella had a thin layer of slightly crispy rice on the bottom of the pan; it was fairly easy to scrape this up and perfectly fine to eat. Drinks like the Salt & Peppers ($20), Sidecar Named Desire ($20), and Cubo Negroni ($19) were very good. Our meal would have been about $100 per person. We paid half that -- an excellent deal! Ultimately, the discount was the part of the meal that wowed me the most. Del Mar is worth considering but expect to pay a premium for the location. read more

Everything. Was. Absolutely. Delicious! From the Crudo to the Grilled Artichokes and everything in between was crazy good. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because of price. Typically the prices are a bit too high for my fiancé and I to dine at Del Mar but this week for two days they had a special for 50 percent off the whole bill which made it much more plalettable. Wish they either had this special more often or brought their prices down slightly. But loved every minute of our experience! read more

Tried this place for lunch for the first time; have had many successful delicious dinners. I had the fig salad on the express menu and it was ok. I also got the croquettes (amazing, as always), the grilled artichoke (killer- highly recommend) and the Branzino filet (absolute perfection). Paella was a disappointment. read more
