Typical Mexican restaurant in North Durham. The drinks were good. Prices reasonable for the amount of food given. Food served hot and fresh, in a timely fashion. I ordered the combo chicken burrito/enchilada with red sauce/salsa verde. It comes with rice your choice of refried beans or black beans. Overall, pretty decent food. So let me set the stage real quick (by quick I mean please give me a few seconds... 1) It's been a decade since I've enjoyed food in Durham. 2) For the last decade I happily was a district resident and had access to some pretty delicious MEX food and so.... with that out of the way, you can already glean that my pallette is particular. I ordered a shrimp queso and a white peach sangria (frozen). I was made aware a few minutes after the order was placed that that frozen was not possible. The excuse given was not audible... (Quick pause and shout-out to the staff: they were mildly mannerable.) The shrimp queso however had no manners. The cheese sauce tastes odd and the sour cream tastes outdated. The sangria ON THE ROCKS was sweetened with diabetes. I waited 10 minutes for the drink to become more diluted but to no avail. After being asked twice if the food/service was to my liking... I confessed the truth and requested a re-do of the beverage. My request was denied hence the picture below.. Keep the chips. Keep the drink. Skip the shrimp queso. Keep the manners. read more

I paid $30 for this crap! I asked for the three item combination with a chimichanga & two different burritos. They have me 3 burritos and then covered them in runny tomato sauce. The sauce almost taste like pizza sauce/marinara, nothing like a sauce you'd get in any other Mexican restaurant. I also ordered cheese dip that was $8 and it was not in the bag when I got home. Don't know if they were trying the get back at me for placing a to-go order about an hour before they closed & picked it up well before closing, or if their food is always this shitty. $30 for an incorrect, poor quality combo plate & a side of queso dip that didn't even make it in the bag. Solid cuisine at very reasonable rates, especially for the area. The Top Shelf Margarita is a very tasty treat as expected, and they don't skimp on the appropriate ingredients . ;) The lunch burrito (chicken) that I had was excellent. Veggies roasted perfectly. Chicken was tender yet crispy, not dried out, thus that perfect balance most places can't achieve. The queso was thin but not runny, blending perfectly into the rice without clumping it up, but beautifully supporting for a fantastic flavor and texture. My wife said that her Arroz con Polo was "fantastico!" Same experience as mine but also commented on the mushrooms being sliced to a perfect size that enables the flavor profile to blend well within each bite. The folks are nice and the bottom line is that I'm looking forward to coming back next week and starting to explore the menu way deeper as time goes on. read more

I try to be understanding due to current covid circumstances but when the restaurant is empty and it takes 25 mins for chicken and rice and the waitress gets a attitude with me for asking what's taking so long.... We finally decided to try this place out after years of living here and a major hankering for some fajitas. The food was only ok even though the customer service is fair. When waiting for our check and boxes, I was looking at the painting on the wall next to me in my booth. I noticed part of the painting was moving out of the corner of my eye and to my horror, a small (which means there are more) roach came to visit me at my dinner table. We left our leftovers on the table and will never go back. I'm sure this happens in other places but I have never had that experience before and I will stick to my favorites twice the distance away. read more

Food was amazing. The only thing that made them lose a star was the pricing and to go experience. I called them before placing my online order to ask about how to order extra chips. They said the one order comes with a bag of chips already. I asked them if I order an appetizer dip if an additional bag of chips would come with the order? The lady on the phone said yes. When we picked up our order they only gave us the one bag of chips. My husband explained but we noticed after we returned home they charged an additional $2.50 for a bag of chips. This isn't a large sized bag of chips but what you would get if you ordered a small popcorn at the movie theater. Rather disappointing to get told one thing on the phone and then they charge you after you leave the restaurant. But other than that miscommunication, the food was hot and delicious. This is seriously THE best place to go for Mexican food in North Durham! We find ourselves here, on average, twice per week. The service is always fast and friendly, the food is great, it's always clean, and we always have a fantastic experience. I love coming here! Valentin is *awesome*, has a pleasant, upbeat attitude, and always takes great care of us. The food is plentiful and tastes great. We often order steak or shrimp fajitas, shrimp and rice, Arroz con Pollo (AcP), and always get the cheese dip... we've never had a bad item from them!! They have a really interesting white dip that they bring to the table in addition to the salsa and chips, you've gotta try it! Have been going there for years because the food is really good, price is reasonable, staff are fun and helpful, and they have a good selection. Carnitas in red and green sauce are really nice - and the heat comes as you eat! Fajitas are a go to because the entree is tasty and enough for two people - even when you only order it for one! Truly some of the most abhorrent and wildly awful service I have ever received at a dining establishment. Our server butchered our drink order, unable to distinguish the difference between melon and mango and also unable to discern betwee. frozen and on the rocks. When we brought this to her attention, she attempted to make us pay twice, for the inaccurate drink and the one we ordered. Then a manager (I'm guessing?) brought the correct drink and slammed (no exaggeration) it down on the table. I have no idea how the food is. I lost my appetite. I work in the service industry, and that leaves me to always give the benefit of the doubt in sitautions like this. Restaurant work is hard. Went here based on google reviews... DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!!!! Ordered steak fajitas, shrimp fajitas & 3 tacos- we received enough chips and salsa for a 5 year old! 25 chips to be exact and 4 tablespoons of salsa, yes I counted/measured. If this was an order for 1 meal then that's perfectly acceptable, however, for $35 I expected more. Steak was tough as leather and not nearly enough for 2 fajitas, the 6 SMALL shrimp were rubbery, the "guacamole" that comes w/the fajitas was nothing more than pulverized avocado-no seasoning whatsoever and was very dark There was NO cheese or sour cream for the fajitas, the tacos had enough ground beef to fill a tablespoon per taco - and yes! I measured! I guess this is what I get for not going to Matatlan Mexican Restaurant on Guess Road, they NEVER fail to have fantastic food, generous portions and enough chips & GREAT salsa for the whole family! I have written 170 reviews since November of 2011, and I have never written a one star review because I can usually find some redeeming factor to bump it up to a two star. Usually. But not today. This has to be the worst "Mexican" food I have ever been served. My husband and I dropped in to Del Rancho (formerly Don Cecillios) for lunch today on a whim. It was a spur of the moment decision. I didn't think to check the Yelp reviews first. *cue ominous music* It looks almost exactly the same as it did when it was Don Cecillios, although they may have slapped some fresh paint on the wall, and the lights are a bit brighter. The changeover must have been fairly recent as they hadn't even finished scraping the old name off the door (or perhaps it's just laziness). It was around 1:30 pm and the place was empty, so we were seated immediately. The obviously bored waitron-unit brought us a half basket of chips, a very small container of hot salsa, and a very small container of some mystery dressing / dip. It was like a very weak Green Goddess or Ranch. And speaking of weak, I ordered a Sprite and suspect it may have been watered down. My husband ordered a salad with grilled chicken. He kind of shrugged when I asked him how it was. No raves. No real complaints. It was edible. I ordered the "Pick Three Lunch Special", and got a hard shell beef taco, a beef chimichanga, and chicken quesadilla. It came with "rice" and refried beans. I started off with the chimichanga. It was very plain. I couldn't detect any seasoning at all, but it was edible. The "rice" was awful. It was like a bland, beige-colored pile of cardboard pellets. Someone may have accidentally dropped a few sprinkles of salt on the refried beans (hallelujah!) because that was the best thing on the plate. The chicken quesadilla was bland bland bland. Again, no seasoning, and the texture of wrap was like cardboard. I gave it two bites and gave up. Worst of all was the taco. I looked forward to the crunch of the hard shell and was disappointed when I saw the underside was soaking wet and falling apart. So I grabbed the part of the shell that was still hard and took a big bite ... and got a big mouthful of nearly raw hamburger and watery Iceberg lettuce. It was disgusting. I poked around in the rest of the taco and the beef was barely cooked! That was the meal-ender for me. In short, the surroundings are less than attractive, the service is less than friendly, and the food is awful awful awful. Do yourself a favor and pick up a frozen entrée at the Food Lion on the other end of the mall and I guarantee that you'll have a better meal. read more

This is been my favorite restaurant for years and the only place I will eat Mexican food. Tonight I tried Grubhub for the first time and it was a wonderful experience. The same great food that I've always loved was delivered hot and on time! Additionally I was meant by friendly familiar face from Del Rancho staff I highly recommend the food and the restaurant however also recommend the food through Grubhub because you get the same great stuff and you get to enjoy it at home once in a while.
