I first saw Field of Dreams in 1989, and the movie has stayed with me ever since. When we arrived, we were asked if we'd consider donating $20 toward the upkeep of the field. I couldn't get the money out of my pocket fast enough. Keeping a place like this available for people to experience is absolutely worth supporting. Seeing the farmhouse, wooden bleachers and baseball diamond surrounded by Iowa corn was almost surreal. The best part is that you're not just standing behind a rope looking at everything. I walked onto the field, through the outfield grass, into the corn and then back out again. I sat in the bleachers with our dog Gus and even got to hold a bat and imagine standing at the plate. For me, there was also a very personal connection. I never got to play catch with my father, which is probably one reason the ending of this movie has always affected me so deeply. Standing on that field brought back emotions I wasn't expecting. For a little while, I wasn't thinking about being 68 years old. I was thinking about being that kid who loved baseball and wondering, "What if?" We unfortunately missed the farmhouse tour by just a few minutes. The next tour was an hour later, and with another three-hour drive to Des Moines ahead of us, we couldn't wait. That's my only regret from the visit, and certainly not the Field of Dreams' fault. There is also a nice visitor area with memorabilia, displays and souvenirs. Baseball and movie fans will find plenty to look at. My advice: don't rush this place. Walk onto the field. Sit in the bleachers. Walk into the corn. Take your pictures, but put the phone away for a few minutes too and just look around. Way out in the middle of Iowa sits a baseball field made famous by a movie more than three decades ago. For some people, it will simply be a cool movie location. For me, it was something much more. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday gift to myself. Absolutely worth the trip.

While roadtripping across the United States, I knew I wanted to add this to our list of places to stop. We were not disappointed! It's a lovely drive amongst the cornfields to get to the site. We came on a Tuesday in August and it wasn't crowded at all. Plenty of parking. $20 suggested donation to enter. They provide bats and balls and gloves and anyone can go out on the field for a catch or to bat, or run the bases. Lots of families around playing on the field. They even had a "ghost player" dressed in a 1919 era uniform to pose for pictures. You can take a tour of the farm house for an added price, though we didn't do this part. They have a snack stand next to the field and a full restaurant next to the farm house if you get hungry, both of which serve alcohol. I guess the only downside is how wildly commercialized the whole site has become. A gigantic gift shop, the aforementioned restaurant, and an indoor event space all overshadow the much smaller farm house, and the massive stadium built for MLB's annual game looms over the left field fence. But the magic is still there. The magic of the most perfect baseball movie ever made, transposed into the modern era in the form of families spending time together in a heaven made of sunny Iowa cornfields.

There are a few cubbies and coat racks available as you enter the second floor, which work perfectly for me to leave a few items. Locker rooms are also available on the first floor with locks for rent form the front desk (or just bring your own). The two gymnasiums are also clean and in good shape. Open gym times are posted at the front desk and online each week. You can also reserve the space rather simply. I've participated in Flag Football practice in the gym the past few weeks, and it was easy to navigate where to go.

There are lanes for swimming and a wonderful deep area for independent water aerobics. Perhaps the best part of this pool are the members of the community who use it. They are so friendly and welcoming to all-- a place where friends can be made and easy-going conversation makes the time fly! This community pool is a downtown treasure. While I live closer to Mercer, the warmth of the water and the people who swim at Robert A Lee lure me to this lovely place where everybody knows your name.

I stand by that the staff here is insanely helpful and courteous, as well. You can't go wrong with signing up your kiddo for: - SWIM LESSONS. The times are convenient, the staff is knowledgeable, pricing seems right. My only knock on this is you can't register online, only via the phone. - SUPREME LEAGUES. My children have participated in basketball and football leagues through the Coralville Rec and I can say from experience of signing up one season with another rec center in the area-- they do it best. Communication is on point. -FREE PARKING. The Iowa City Rec Center is a nightmare to park at most times. And honestly, the NL Rec Center (while it is free) is chaos as well. -SPARKS CAMP. This is hands down the best camp offered in the area. The price is right. It is offered ALL summer. They do field trips, pool visits, library days and tons of fun activities. The staff is always great, too. Be sure to sign up right away! It fills up fast around March. I think my biggest knock is just that the facility itself is pretty dated. Get your kid active and thriving, sign them up for programmed at the Coralville Rec Center.

You can check in ahead of time online but you always need to sign a waiver. The staff is very friendly and they keep their eyes peeled to make sure everyone is safe and isn't doing anything that could potentially hurt themselves. You have to buy their socks that have grips on them for $2.00. Per person it was roughly $20.00 for a 90 minute jump session. They have a slushee bar there. It is great for birthday parties and just a regular day. I have seen people there with their less than 1 year old on the trampoline which seemed a little odd to me to do. Since there was a kids birthday party going on. Lots of kids and chaos. They have high jumps and little trampolines too. Some activities include dodge ball, a mini ninja warrior type thing, a rock climbing wall, basketball, a swing into a foam pit and some other things as well. Everyone was having fun! Fun for all ages.
