They killed our dog, she was Misdiagnosed. She had two types of cancer and we didn't know. We kept asking what the growths were on her body and were assured they were fine. After spending thousands of dollars at Herder the sent us to Blue Pearl to spend $7,000 more to list all the things they had missed. Our beloved dog died a week later. - They push vaccinations, the new ones that I don't think my dogs need because of their environment. When I decline those vaccination, they treat me as if I abuse my dogs. That attitude makes me very angry. We love our three dogs. My wife and I work different shifts to be home with them, especially because of our senior basset hound. - I don't believe I should have to pay exorbitantly to obtain quality medical care for my dogs, I took my senior dog in to have her anal glands expressed, and her toenails trimmed. This is the breakdown of the bill: Tech Visit: $25.00 Nail Trim: $22.00 Anal Glands Expressed: $28.00 In my opinion, this is extreme price gouging. - We respect most of the staff. However, for the reasons stated above, we're looking for a new vet. read more

Completely outstanding. There is no other way to say it. We took our conures here this morning for a check up, and to get their nails groomed. First thing you notice about the place, even at 8 in the morning, was that it was a very warm atmosphere and everyone was very enthusiastic, nice, and helpful. There was very much a 'family' feel to the office and the way the staff interacted with each other and other repeat visitors who came into the door (they greeted everyone, knew the pets by name, asked how the pets were, etc). Dr. Cherney was truly astounding. She was very knowledgeable, and handled our birds with care. She took a lot of time to ask questions and get to know our birds, both about their health conditions, and personalities. She gave us a lot of advice, and seemed to simply enjoy talking about birds with us. I cannot say how impressed we were. All of the staff we met were fantastic, from the nurse who assisted us with the birds, to the office crew. Everyone wanted to see and meet the birds, and talked with us. I've been to a lot of vets over the years, for a lot of different animals, but have never seen a place like this. If I could give a sixth star, I would. I am happy I made the choice to have Den Herder provide my veterinary cares. I choose this place when I first moved to Waterloo. I was looking for a place that was relatively nearby, seemed professional and also offered care for small animals. I own a 9 year dog, and at the time, I also had three mice. My very first visit was unfortunately a sad one, but Dr Lori made me feel comfortable and as welcome as I possibly could. She has since seem me through the death of my little ones and continues to care for my old man dog. Sometimes it takes a few days to make appointments, and they only have one day that they are open late I think, which works for my work schedule, and they are probably on the most expensive side of other vets in the area, but I will be staying with them. I have enjoyed the care they have provided, the cards they send with reminders or condolences, and I feel like they really care about my animals. I highly recommend, Dr Lori in particular, at Den Herder for another looking for a veterinarian they can trust. read more

I've been taking my pet to DenHerder veterinary since I moved here in 1998. Back then they were located in a smaller building and Jerry DenHerder was still around. At that time my rating of them was definitely five stars. Everyone was very personable and caring with outstanding care and concern for all pets and clients. Then a few years ago, Jerry retired and the business moved to their new location with a bigger building, bigger staff and ever increasing charges. Everyone is still very nice, but there are changes....as happens when a business grows and becomes more concerned about profits. I now get constant automatic reminders to bring my pet in for unnecessary visits and treatments. In spite of everything, I continued to take my pet there. However, my last visit was the end of my loyalty as a customer. I took my pet in for her annual shots. I saw a vet that I had never met before and she spent less than five minutes in the room with us as she seemed to be in a hurry. But she told me that my dog had something wrong with its tooth (split tooth?) and it was important to have it fixed within 3 months! Naturally I was concerned and even though I wasn't sure what she was talking about, she convinced me into having blood work done now ..."to save time" before having the tooth fixed, so I said sure. She left and I went out front to pay and said I'd like to schedule a time to "fix" this tooth the vet told me needed done within 3 months. The receptionist told me the vet was busy with another client and that they would "call me". This greatly surprised me as I was led to believe it was important to schedule a time for it, but I paid the bill (including $100 + for the blood work) and left. All of this happened at the end of March and I've never heard a word from them since. This last visit was just one of many small, but frustrating incidences that concerned me over the years since Jerry had left and they moved locations, which is why I decided to write down my concerns. I'm sure all of the veterinarians there are qualified and do a good job, but they are no longer the stellar veterinarian clinic it was when Jerry DenHerder was there. read more

I trust the staff and doctors they are very caring and concerned. The follow-up calls really mean a lot! I highly recommend this Veterinary Hospital. We have had an allergy dog, and another with a herniated disk. Dr. Tom walked us through the scary surgery for one, and has educated us in caring for a dog with allergies, and they are now under control. They are the best in the area!! read more

Me and my husband have been taking our dog to the Den Herder kennel for a couple years when we go on vacation. Today I called to reserve a kennel for our vacation and they told me sorry, we only kennel our current customers. I explained we have kenneled our dog there for the past couple of years for vacation. They said sorry we save the kennels for our customers who do all their shots here. I was shocked and disappointed about this. When we did take our dog their they had no problem making us get another flu shot for our dog and the doctor gave our dog an additional shot for an upset stomach, without even consenting with us first, but we got the bill for it. Bad customer service. All about making money. read more
