My mother with dementia ended up going to an emergency room, and then immediately to a memory care facility. Regardless of the fact that we did not see this coming, extended family home care continued to bill for 2 weeks worth of services which was about 1,200+ only because they were not notified of cancelling services. We had two other home care agencies providing services and neither one of them had this unethical billing policy. On top of that, some of the caregivers did not seem to provide quality care. And also had inconsistent caregiving services, with some cancelling last minute or did not even had the right skill level to care for my mother.

Simple things like a phone with larger buttons and easy to use message retrieval were helpful in ensuring we could communicate with our father. The medical box set up and monitoring system helped us manage his on-going and complex prescription needs. Additionally, she helped ensure he was getting proper nutrition and had a support system to check in on him to make sure he remained active and engaged in the community. I believe his quality of life was tremendously enhanced by the support and care they extended. And, I know it gave me greater piece of mind knowing that there was someone close who could make a visit to see how Dad was doing when we couldn't get in touch. When you're trying to figure out how to put their app on your phone, they accuse you of being on the phone during orientation I would not work for them if I were you. You could be the most experienced caregiver and they still want you to do a shadow shift.

We recently had to navigate hospice care for my father, who had pancreatic cancer. This was an…read moreincredibly hard process, but many aspects were made easier by this team. The good: Laura, especially, was on call the night my dad entered the final stages of dying and her support and guidance that night were invaluable to me and my family. She gave more accurate guidance than other members of the care team around what was needed and was very responsive. The team was very supportive - we could text my dad's regular nurse and she responded quickly. They did their best to make him comfortable. The social worker and chaplain/grief counselor both made sure we had what we needed. Medications and supplies were delivered to their home and were fairly timely. The nurse who came to pronounce death and enter the coroner's report was very nice and compassionate. She was absolutely lovely and a kind face for a family after a sleepless night and a major loss. The not as good (not really bad): The initial communication and set-up was a little bumpy and delayed. We had to push a little and self-advocate. We are pretty savvy health care consumers, and we had to focus on asking a lot of questions and communicating frequently. If this was done, we had excellent care. The key is to communicate often and to reach out to their 24x7 line when in doubt. When we did this, we had no concerns about my dad's care. My only other concern was that I felt we could have been given more information about what to expect and watch for and more supplies proactively. At times, my dad would be uncomfortable for 12 hours while we waited for meds. Some care providers were more knowledgeable than others, like one nurse said my dad's distress may be a lack of oxygen and another (rightly - Laura, mentioned above) said it was the second stage of dying and told me exactly what ended up unfolding. Overall, the staff was really caring and helpful, but for anyone going through this process, communicate heavily and seek help from the provided resources when you're unsure. This service was also respectful of our wishes to not have any religious or spiritual support.
