My mother with dementia ended up going to an emergency room, and then immediately to a memory care facility. Regardless of the fact that we did not see this coming, extended family home care continued to bill for 2 weeks worth of services which was about 1,200+ only because they were not notified of cancelling services. We had two other home care agencies providing services and neither one of them had this unethical billing policy. On top of that, some of the caregivers did not seem to provide quality care. And also had inconsistent caregiving services, with some cancelling last minute or did not even had the right skill level to care for my mother.

Unfortunately, my mother was a resident of Holly Heights Nursing Care Center and Rehabilitation…read morefrom December, 2023 to December, 2024. She passed away on December 3, 2024. I believe the extremely poor quality of her life there, and the lack of medical attention shortened her life significantly. During the first six months of her residency, she received subpar day-to-day care. She did have one CNA that she really liked, but she left when management changed. Complaints during this time period included being soiled for extended periods, slow response to the call button (upward of an hour), filthy living conditions, a mouse infestation, no emotional support and overall rude management that dismissed the family's concerns. My mother's vision greatly declined so it was hard for her to use a phone. We had to rely on staff to bring her a phone to have any type of communication. The staff was always so put out with this request, and would often hang up on family members. You were lucky if someone even answered the phone! It was hit or miss. Fast forward to September, 2024. This is when my mother truly suffered and declined. Ownership changed, which included a whole new administrative staff. They also cut staff and wages for existing employees (which was relayed to me by one staff member). Mom suffered a stroke that sent her to the hospital. Unfortunately, the stroke was undiagnosed by the hospital. She should have had an MRI performed. While in the hospital, she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. This to me, is a result of her not receiving proper hygiene care from staff. The biggest health concern, is that my mother was complaining of lower abdomen pain. This was ignored by the staff, doctor and social worker that got involved due to the family constantly asking for help. Because the facility refused to have additional testing done, the family had to go outside of the facility for further testing. As a result of a CT Scan, it was recommended that a colonoscopy be performed. By the time we got the clearance for this procedure from the Cardiologist, it was too late. We waited 8 months for this health condition to be addressed by the facility. My mother was just too weak for the procedure. I believe she had a serious health condition, as this was a hereditary condition that we were concerned about. The food menu changed dramatically once ownership changed. Many food items were discontinued, and food quality was so bad. Many residents complained of how awful the food is. How do I know this? Well, because many residents shared this with me. The food was so bad, that my mother had no desire to eat. Also, due to her stroke, she was unable to properly feed herself. The food was just dropped on her table. She had to fend for herself, and it was a real struggle for her. Every time family visited my Mother, we consistently had to clean off the food that was slopped on her chest, bedding and the floor. She was not able to hold a cup without spilling the contents all over herself and floor. We eventually purchased a non-spill cup for her. My mother was severely depressed in this facility and declined quickly as a result of living conditions and lack of empathy from the staff. The activity director only visited my mother one time (toward end of life). My mother's existence consisted of laying in bed all day, with headphones attached, listening to the same TV program over and over again. Unfortunately, I was out of state, so my visits were not as frequent as I'd like. They did become more frequent once I learned of the appalling living conditions. When I did visit, I was shocked, deeply saddened at what my poor mother succumbed to. She felt helpless and just checked out emotionally. All of the above was reported to the facility, Ombudsman, Colorado Health Department and Adult Protective Services. An inspection was completed by the Health Department 1 1/2 months from my initial complaint. This was just too late. The facility was fully aware of pending inspections from various agencies, so they were able to portray a false impression of what normal conditions are really like because of the heads up. It should be noted, that the staff often blamed my mother the lack of her care. So, let's blame a stroke victim for her declining care? It's just easier for them this way I guess. She did this because she dreaded interacting with many employees, especially the social worker and the new management team. Her concerns fell on deaf ears. This is so shameful and inexcusable! Sadly, new management (director and nursing director) was not accountable in any way for the lack of care for my mother. I was told that weekly communication with the family was a courtesy only and should not be expected, and that they had lives outside of work. Yep, that's what we were told on a phone conference. If you are considering Holly Heights for the care of your loved one, please do your due diligence!

This place was highly rated I think by Medicare (a list of rehab centers the hospital provided),…read morebut I was unfortunately extremely disappointed when I visited it. Guess I had high hopes for a highly rated center. I asked the hospital how these ratings were made and it was unclear (no true explanation). I would not even consider this place due to: 1) awful smell of the facility; 2) feelings of it being an unsafe facility; 3) low energy/bad vibes from the facility and residents; and 4) lack of confidence of their rehab capabilities. It was the first one visited which left a really awful feeling about rehab centers, especially if this was one of the higher rated places. Thank goodness it appeared to end up being just a glitch in the ratings where however it was done for this list of places, must have been opposite of what I felt was important in the rating. Out of the 9 that were looked at, this was definitely at the bottom of our list.

I found myself needing some expert guidance when my Mom started to decline due to dementia. It's a…read morescary and confusing world out there for anyone who has tried to figure out the assisted living system and the worry of finding a safe, comfortable and caring facility. The home care service I was using at the time referred me to Phil Hotaling and what a blessing that was! Phil helped me understand so many issues when it came to being in assisted living and what was and what was not provided. He arranged visits with different homes and together we toured each one. He guided me through the questions and issues pertinent to each home. I selected a wonderful place for Mom! The assisted living home has room for 8 residents and is run by a fantastic couple who live there with their two children. Mom is happy there and I'm happy she is well taken care of by loving caring people. I would never have found this place on my own without Phil's help. Thank you Phil for your help, your guidance and just your wonderful heart and caring about your clients and their family. I would never have made it through this last year with Mom and then Dad needing care all on top of two knee replacement surgeries! Getting Mom and Dad together again at Leawood before he died means more than you'll ever truly know.

My point of contact, Josh, was consistently professional, proactive, courteous, and helpful -- guiding me through each step with compassion and clarity. Ashley, the Head RN, demonstrated not only exceptional medical knowledge but also genuine warmth and empathy. She didn't just supervise the team -- she was right there alongside the CNAs, delivering hands-on care with the same dedication and heart. She always listened and answered every question with patience, offered support, prepared me for the changes ahead, and -- most importantly -- treated Vera with the utmost dignity and respect she deserved. The CNAs were equally remarkable -- caring, attentive, and loving in every interaction. They, as with Ashley, were always punctual and lit up the room with their positive, loving energy, which on many occasions prompted Vera to share a long-hidden smile of happiness and sometimes even an enthusiastic "hi!" That was six days ago! Michelle presents herself as an influential positive role model evidenced w/her compassion, how she went the extra mile & performed @ her upmost best!...NOT!!!...SHE GHOSTED ME!!!...I guess this is how she operates her company. My dad and I hired a caregiver from Elderlink named Joyiah, who worked with us for nearly a year,…read morefrom March 2024, until the end of January, 2025. While she was overall very competent and kind to my father, I as her manager had a few important problems with her, which I outline in the below message. These problems resulted in a massive amount of stress for me as I helped to care for my dad during his last year of life, and affected my own health. I was my dad's primary caregiver: responsible for his healthcare, home, caregivers and finances during the last two years of his life. But as my dad required 24-hour care during the last year of his life, we also had to hire caregivers to help us. The idea behind hiring competent caregivers was to provide my dad with additional help and take some responsibility and stress off of me, but unfortunately - Joyiah often added to mine. In a nutshell, Joyiah missed a lot of work, necessitating that I constantly find and train replacements for her on a near-monthly basis, change my own schedule and take up a lot of my own time to rearrange the schedule and monitor the fill-in caregiver, who inevitably couldn't understand my dad's needs well as a new person. I don't know if caregivers can appreciate how stressful and time consuming this is. When I first voiced my concerns to Joyiah about this early on and asked her if she would be taking a lot of time off, she dismissed me and in a condescending manner told me that any person could easily fill in for her, because all elderly people are essentially the same in their care needs. But nothing could be further from the truth. Every person is as unique as their fingerprint and it takes time to get to know the needs of a medically complex and terminally ill human being. I wonder if she has ever been on the other side of the fence and had to care for a terminally ill family member? I have done it three times over a period of eight years total, so I have a fair amount of experience in caregiving and I also have a medical background, so I know how complex a terminally ill person's care can be. Also, we had to double pay caregivers every time we needed to train a fill-in caregiver, nearly every time Joyiah took time off - because we had to give them at least a couple days of training on the basics of my dad's care. And even still, I had to assist the fill-in caregivers, because nobody can know all the nuances of a person's care after just 2 days of training. Further, Joyiah treated me more like a peer than her employer, and would often talk to me in a condescending, high-minded manner. She responded in a disrespectful manner at times when I would make simple requests of her - something that I felt was reasonable because I too, was my dad's caregiver and I knew him and his needs better than anyone. I was not a micromanager but as his daughter and primary caregiver, and her employer, I felt that it was reasonable for me to make requests of her and check in with her daily to get an update on my dad's condition and provide input on his needs, because he was very medically complex. And, simply because I loved him. She was also rude to two of my dad's other caregivers at times. When they would try to be friendly with her, she would respond abrasively and in a condescending manner at times. This is totally unacceptable. I would never, in a million years, ever think of addressing an employer the way Joyiah talked to me. Even my father had said during her first months with us (before he had serious dementia during his last months of life), that he felt like she talked down to him. I felt the same way. Thankfully, he ended up liking her more toward the end of his life, and she was competent and (except for her absences) did a good job in caring for him. Finally, after working with us for eight months, Joyiah told me that she wanted to take over one of the other caregiver's night shifts, rather than continuing to work the dayshift, which is what we had hired her for, and which my dad was used to. She told me she would leave us if a night shift opportunity came up for her elsewhere. I told her that I didn't understand why she had accepted to work the day shift with us, if she wanted to only work nights in the first place. Elderlink did nothing to insist that she stay at the job position we hired her for, and did not tell her that she needed to honor her commitment to us. They also allowed her to take as much time off as she wanted. So, realizing that Joyiah was not committed to my dad or our family, because she told us (after eight months) that she would leave us if a night position came up elsewhere - I hired a new daytime caregiver. Sadly, my dad was unable to adapt to her and left this world much sooner than I believe he would have otherwise, in part because the caregiver whom he had grown accustomed to, was no longer there.
