The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.

One gentleman ran his ungloved hand through his hair, put the hat back on and then proceeded to grab a ball of fresh noodles and drop them in the water. The gloved hand wasn't used. I don't know what to think, but not very sanitary, but then nothing the boiling water wouldn't take care of either. ;) The cook staff were constantly busy and were not standing around. Their meal deals are good value, but there's a big BUT here. The quality of the food is poor. The "chippy" items (king ribs etc) seem to be cooked en masse and left in the glass heater for hours upon hours. You can never truly be sure of how "fresh" these items are. Same goes for the chips, some of the chips I had recently had "fat seep" where the chip had soaked up some of the fat and had changed the texture to, well, yuck. I'd never seen this before. I also had a "breakfast" from here a while ago, there was a black (non-curly) hair in it. The pizzas are decent, and hand made from fresh dough. They really need to work on their hygiene.

The Glen always knew all of their regulars by name - hint, hint as that is part of what keeps customers coming back but it seems this is a forgotten skill as its all about the money and speed of service now it seems without any attention to making a good fry up either!

I'd definitely go back to Catch and would get a takeaway here, but I do think the prices are pretty steep for what is a casual fish shop dining experience. The prices are considerable cheaper if you're taking away (cod is £10.95 for eat in or £5.40 take away!) so we will do that next time. I also started with some soup. The soup was bigger than expected! I couldn't finish it otherwise I wouldn't be hungry for my main. It came with some bread to dip. It was good. My meat pie came with a flaky crust and packed with chucks of beef. It was delicious. Our waitress was so friendly and asking us about our travels. Nice place!
