I arrived at The Chippy Doon The Lane at the right time, around 5:45 p.m., on Tuesday 16 July 2019. The walk in to the entrance was through an alley between two buildings and had signage marking the restaurant was getting near, as I approached not another person did appear. The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. My husband and I stopped by this restaurant while visiting Glasgow for the day. We were craving fish and chips and didn't want to walk too far from the bustle of all of the shopping. Chippy checked all of our boxes and we set off to this spot down the strange ally and up the steps into the old building the houses the restaurant. From the outside, we expected the restaurant to look much different, but it's got a nice, modern feel to it. Once we got inside the woman there asked if we had reservations, there were 2 other people in the restaurant and otherwise empty - we came at a weird time in between lunch and dinner. When we said no, she let us know there were only 3 tables we could choose from near the entry door. Perfectly fine, but nonetheless a bit of a strange policy. For those wondering, the "reserved" tables did not fill up while we were seating. We ordered one cod fish and chip meal and one haddock We also tried the haggis pakora here and some beers. The food was tasty, well made and came out at a reasonable speed. The chips are thick cut and the tartar sauce with the dish is fantastic - very bold. We enjoyed this quick stop for lunch. read more

Huge portions seem to be a Glasgow staple, and Chippy Doon the Lane doesn't disappoint on that front. I had the cod supper, which was actually a relatively small/normal size piece of fish on a ma-hoosive mound of chips. It comes with a wedge of lemon and some homemade tartar sauce. That sauce was amazing - I had to get extra (they give you plenty, I was just sharing and overdoing it). Our waitress was the most charming, and the decor lovely. Can't believe I've never been here before as I love a good fish supper (with all the extras coz that's what we do in that England). Came here on a Friday evening with some friends from work and for most of us it was our first time here. Service was snappy and drinks came quickly - I had the white Rioja and this was the first time I had tasted a white Rioja and it was most delicious indeed. Slurp. For starters I chose the chicken liver pate which was supposed to come with oatcakes and chutney but instead came with apple sauce?! Bizarre. I hate apple sauce so I avoided it like I would a sports bar. Great big wedge of the pate but (a wee bugbear of mine) only 5 wee oatcakes. If I'd had a bigger handbag I'd have taken the rest home I tell thee because the pate was lovely. For main I opted for the Lemon Sole supper - never had lemon sole before so was eager to try it but alas, they had 'sold out' that evening *sad face* So I opted for Haddock instead with a side order of mushy peas (oh yas!). When my haddock supper arrived I was opened mouthed at the sheer amount of fish & chips! Wowza. Deffo get your moneys worth here. Wasn't to jazzed about the cardboard 'fake newspaper' container they came in though...made it a wee bit awkward at times to eat from - I'd much prefer a simple (or jazzy) plate. The fish suppers all come with a HUGE quarter of lemon and 'homemade tartar sauce' - I wasn't a fan of their tartar sauce; it was too much like a flavoured mayonnaise than an actual tartar sauce - not enough capers, gherkins or tarragon in my humble opinion. I will most definitely be back here again as the quality of the fish was superb. I also like the sound of their Fish Tea Special and their 2 Course Special. I'll also need to check out the lemon sole (eventually) too. I was most impressed with the price as we had quite a few (not cheap) drinks and all had starters and quality suppers (with extras) and it only came to £20 each, that's including a good tip! Nice one. One other thing is when you go to the toilets try not to be alarmed when you turn to your side and see lots of yourself staring back! Chippy doon the lane....... And then up a close!! I have eaten here before but after returning for a second time I wasn't as over the moon as I was the first time! Firstly when I arrived the exterior was very grubby, after pulling at the door for a couple of seconds to find it wasn't opened yet! After waiting 5 minutes the place opened! To enter the restaurant you have to climb up to the first floor! It's situated in an old style Glasgow tenement which I never noticed before. When we arrive we were the first customers, the hostess asked if we had a reservation which we didn't, the then hostess grumped about us not having one ( this was a Monday afternoon and the place was empty... Even when we left) a quick glance at the menu it seemed like there was quite a few deals on. I went for the haddock and chips. It was a massive portion and very very fresh! The food was nice, but just nice. The staff could have been a little bit nicer and the outside stairs could have been doing with a wash but there was something that I just couldn't put my finger on. Wandering the city centre to find somewhere to eat I'd been thought through, and discarded, a lot of options; burgers/beef (too often), sushi (too expensive, or rather I eat too much of it!), pizza/pasta (had it at the weekend), burrito (had it at the weekend)... I was running out of ideas. And so my trusty Yelp app prompted me to try the Chippy Doon the Lane, fish and chips, yes! Not had these for ages. So I wander down the alleyway, to a not very inviting entrance (nor clearly signed, was I to go up those stairs or into that bar looking place on the ground floor?) and found myself asking for a table for one, and no I hadn't reserved. It was pretty quiet, a few couples seated here and there, but I had an hour to kill so was in no rush. At this point I remembered why I don't eat fish and chips all that often, I love the idea but I'm a bit... bone-phobic (it gives me the ick, I don't know why) so I usually end up looking at the other options on the menu. And there it was, my go to favourite, scampi and chips with a side of mushy peas, yes! Once ordered the food arrived promptly, less than 10 minutes from ordering. Looks wise it wasn't the most appetising, some pale looking chips, cheap looking scampi and a mass of 'salad' that dominated the plate. For salad read; cucumber, lettuce, red onion and baby tomatoes swimming in a tasteless dressing. The mushy peas looked like mushy peas. Taste wise it was all so so. The tartare sauce wasn't particularly tangy, the chips were cooked but were neither fluffy nor crispy, the scampi was overly breadcrumbed and lacking in actual scampi, the mushy peas were ok after a liberal dosing of vinegar and the salad was... a limp, soggy distraction. I'm pretty sure I could've cooked the same meal myself. Exactly the same meal as I have few doubts that the ingredients were not all straight from a packet (and even then I've ordered better frozen scampi from Tesco!). Looking at some of the other dishes that were being delivered, the fish portions looked good, and given the reviews I was expecting a little better than my experience suggested, perhaps my choice of meal was just an unlucky one... but that is still no real excuse. The main saving grace was the price. Scampi and chips, mushy peas and a diet coke all came to £10 on the nose. I doubt I'll venture back unless coerced, it wasn't bad, the staff were friendly enough, the decor is nice and the price certainly dulls the edges of my experience, but it certainly wasn't somewhere I'll be recommending to others. read more

So I've been back in several times and never had a problem - until last night. I definitely feel like I've been glutened, so I called today to ask a few questions about how the kitchen does gluten free. While they assured me my meal was actually gluten free (and I believe them - that much gluten probably would land me in a hospital), I still have the symptoms of a gluten exposure. I had never bothered to ask before, but it turns out they use the same fryer for gluten and gluten-free batter. I'm guessing that since they were really busy yesterday, I managed to get exposed via the fryer oil. At any rate, I blame myself for this one, since I didn't ask in advance. For those of you who do eat gluten-free: beware the shared fryers! The star reduction is due to really inconsistent service - some days it's great, some days they completely forget you exist. Sometimes they just don't check on you ever again after you get your food, and they don't hear your request for a glass of water :( read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only has the price of their Fish Tea not risen since my visit last year, its also available all day and all evening. After a long day enjoying the free cultural highlights of Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and spending rather too much money into the bargain, £6.95 for a big fresh slab of battered fish & chips with a pot of tea and bread & butter was just the ticket! Glasgow was bursting at the seams with Games go-ers so Chippie being hidden 'doon the lane' was a good call, as most places were mobbed. Though my appetite was big, I struggled to finish my generous portion of food served up in a cute cardboard chippy tray with proper cutlery. Funny how sometimes the cheapest food is the most enjoyable food. Great service and nice ooking place once you get past the dark alley and up the stairs. This was my first visit to The Chippy Doon The Lane (I know, what's wrong with me?!!) and I have to say, I wasn't disappointed! From the outside, it doesn't look like much to be honest and all my trust was placed in my friend as she led me down the lane and up the stairs into the restaurant. They had just been painting the exterior so there was a strong smell of paint, but nothing that you noticed once you were inside. The interior is really nice and for a chippy, I was really impressed! I don't personally like fish but there is a selection of different fishes (including a catch of the day) along sausage, black pudding, fishcakes and macaroni cheese. So even if you aren't a fish lover like me, there are plenty of mains to choose from! There is also a great selection of starters, side dishes and desserts (I believe?!) but we didn't try any of those. My friend went for the fish tea whilst I opted for the sausage supper with chips. The portions are beyond generous and extremely filling. The chips were nice (not the best I have ever tasted) but the batter on the sausage was delicious and by far was the best I have ever tasted!! I was really impressed! My friend enjoyed her fish tea although she had to ask for her tea and bread & butter several times before they arrived at the table (she had been served her main) which was a little annoying to be honest. I think she felt like she was pestering them each time she had to remind them and the place wasn't busy or anything. She did tell me that is the first time that has happened though. I really enjoyed my meal and I would definitely pay The Chippy Doon The Lane a visit again. Great value for money! Knocking a star off! Never had a bad experience in here, but I've also never been on a Saturday night.. Was welcomed with the message that I had an hour to get fed and leave, presumably because they had a party coming. Under such circumstances, I would have expected to get served quickish but alas, no. We were not given much notice at all, with a large party being catered for taking up everyone's time and attention. Immense promo for 2 haddock suppers and 2 glasses of wine for £15, which helped make the experience infinitely more pleasurable. After this though, we waited 25 minutes after being given the bill and had to go up and pay which didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. Didn't start or end well, but the middle was the usual excellent fish and chips with generous portions, perfectly cooked. I love the grub in this place, I can't not be.. Love the place, recommend it. Chips: nice squared cut pieces. A light crispness on the outside with a mushy, warm inside. If you like 'em well done, these ain't those. The potion is generous. Fish: had the battered cod, smaller than the haddock, which is massive and cheaper, so if you're hungry, that's the one for you. You can get it breaded, but why? The fish was perfectly done. The inside was hot and steamy, the outside golden crisp perfection. Find it down the alley/lane with Monsoon and Lush on the corners. Across from Timberland. First up - I hate, hate, hate, the name of this place. Calling itself The Chippy Doon The Lane gives the impression of a smallish cafe that has a good reputation for fish and chips - not the big, glossy restaurant it actually is. It even serves the food in card boxes instread of plates - as if to remind you that you're having cheap food in nice surroundings. It irked me. A lot. That aside, the staff were super friendly and it was fast. I opted for the veggie burger which was nice and spicy - but obviously frozen, rather than newly made. Since I moved to Glasgow, I've been wanting to try The Chippy Doon The Lane. My guy and I had a voucher for two fish suppers plus tea or coffee and decided to head in to town one afternoon to finally try it out. It literally is doon the lane right next to Bread + Butter, which come to find out, they're all part of a larger group of restaurants as this info was advertised on the fish supper boxes our food later came in. The restaurant itself is quite modern and unlike anything I was expecting. Exposed brick walls and modern lighting made for an interesting feel to the place. What's more random is that there was a hen do on the other side of the restaurant from us- maybe out of convenience as Bread + Butter next door does some good drink deals. It was quite warm the day we stopped in, so I was fully planning on making myself out to be a weirdo and order hot tea with a big glass of ice, but upon asking for it and mentioning how warm I was, the waiter said that I could swap out the hot drink for a cold fizzy drink instead. Success! We were given an option of different fishes to order which was nice. We both went with the Cod suppers, because cod is delicious. To be fair, the fish was pretty tasty and not as greasy as I expected it to be. Not the best fish and chips I'd ever had, but we both quite enjoyed our food and the portions were huge. I think my guy ended up eating some of mine that was leftover. The suppers came with bread and butter as well, so you can only imagine how full we must have been afterwards. The deal we had made it a no brainer to stop in, and even without the voucher, the prices are quite affordable. They always have deals on for a fish supper, so it's worth checking out. read more

After a hard days shopping, my friends and I decided to stop here for some fish'n'chips, after being recommended by a friend. It's quite well hidden, but don't be put off - it's worth it. Not what your average chip shop looks like, to be honest - it's quite flashy, and cool. Wooden floors, purple decor, dark wood, bare brick.... it's very relaxing although 'trendy'. My friends and I opted for the Fish Tea Special (£5.95) which means you get fish, chips, tartare sauce, and a cup of tea. Fantastic. The fish tea special is one of the many items on the menu - of course, it's mainly seafood related, however, you can choose which fish you want everything from coley to monkfish tail, or fishcakes, or you could also choose from chicken goujons, pate and spring rolls (?). But wait, what could be better than this? Well, the fact that your food is served in....newspaper print boxes! Not what you'd expect at all (obviously, old-fashioned newspaper is now not so hygenic, however, these boxes are brilliant), it's quite the novelty, and had us giggling for a good 10 minutes (we were reading the 'stories'). OK let' set the scene: Old man of the wife father type variety is over from the land of Moose and Mounties and wants to try as many different types of Scottish/British/other places food as possible. "What's it today old man?" "what?" "Food, what kind of food do you fancy?" "Who are you?" "What?" "What?" OK, maybe I'm taking the mickey a little. Anyway, on this occasion we went on the hunt for some swimmy things and deep fried potatoes and found this fantabulous eatery. Aye it's a bit trenderific (read, exposed ducting, exposed bricks etc) but it sits pretty well with the general feel of the joint, so doesn't really distract from the main event...the grub. Now i'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to good fish and chips, believing that it's the type of meal which falls into the " surely it's so simple to make that it's impossible to mess up" category. A tad long winded, but hey, my categories, my rules. Anyway, this preconception has often ended me up with a shoddy excuse for grub, leaving me picking bones out of my gob for most of the meal. Personally while I like to eat a little fish (and in this case, the fish was of excellent quality here), I tend to always go for something else on the menu. In this case, I ordered the sausage supper. Now, having been to Scotland before, I happened to know two things. 1) That supper means that the item comes with chips, and 2) the sausage is going to be in batter. That made the menu a little easier to grasp, but I wonder if some tourists would struggle. I doubt for long, as the very friendly staff would no doubt happily explain it all. So I ordered my sausage supper, and while I had anticipated the large portion of chips that'll come with it (already salted, btw), I didn't expect there to be two jumbo sausages. Once again, a reminder that I cannot live in Glasgow, because I'd be so much fatter than I already am. Because it was delicious! My first thought is that this is a tourist trap. The portions are big, but everything tasted a bit weird. I think it is the type of oil they are using. Definitely not even near to being the best fish and chips I have ever had. For the price, you cannot beat The Chippy Doon the Lane. I tried it out because we were tired and wanted a quick bite to eat. There are limited options in the centre of town, either mediocre sandwich places or places that are a tad on the expensive side, especially after spending the day shopping! The suppers are under £6 and include a large pieces of beautifully cooked fish, a very generous portion of chips, bread and butter and a cup of tea. There are other things on the menu, but I've never tried anything else as the fish supper is so good! The atmosphere is great as well with a dining room that manages to feel comtemporary and designer without being pretentious at all. Found - finally a fresh fried fish joint serving great quality, made to order PROPER fish and chips. If you ever are headed north this place is a must. They could teach the chippies of London a thing or 2 about how to get the perfect fish & chips. Options of cod, haddock, Pollock and catch of the day starting at a reasonable £8.95 which includes chips, tartar and a glass of wine, beer or soft drink. Service was friendly and prompt and they catered for our large group seamlessly - all food arrived at the same time and was some of the best ive had (and that's a fair few!) I've been to Chippy Doon The Lane before and so when my Christmas night out was booked for here I was pretty pleased. There were a group of about 30 of us going, all pre-booked and when we arrived we were in a sealed off balcoiny area with outside heaters to stop us from freezing in the cold December night. So far, so good. We had ordered some drinks beforehand but being a wine drinker, I have to say it was pretty badly organised. I only ended up having one glass, but even if I hadn't made that decision, it'd have been nigh on impossible to get my second as the bottles were being moved between tables and many of us didn't get our second drink. Small grumble. Our starters came out really quickly - lovely prawn cocktail for me with a nice portion of bread and butter. However, after this point it all went a bit downhill. After our starters were cleared our table had to wait over an hour for our mains to come out - meanwhile the other two tables had already finished theirs. Not great for a group booking. When we questioned this, they explained that it was because the kitchen couldn't handle all the orders at the same time - in my mind, why accept the booking? The same thing happened with our desserts - the other two tables had disappeared through to the linked bar "One Up" before we even got our desserts, and on top of that the staff turned off our heaters so not only were we waiting for ages, we were really cold. While the service left a lot to be desired, it's only fair to comment that the food was lovely. I went for the fish & chips and it was a very generous portion with lovely fish and really nice chips. Fish and chips = quintessentially British (from a Yank's stand point). You have a range of fish and chips... from downright dodgy to quality upmarket fare. I tend to go for the upmarket fare because my previous experiences with dodgy establishments have left me with a bad case of touchy tummy. Touchy tummy = no bueno! The Chippy Doon The Lane would be my recommendation for good fish and chips. It's tucked away "doon the lane" off of Buchanan Street. The restaurant features clean modern decor. The menu provides a good variety of simple mains... nothing pretentious or extravagant. The presentation is quirky (in newspaper print cardboard boxes), and the food is delicious and filling. My first time in Glasgow and really wanted some fish and chips for "old times sake". It was a bit difficult to find, and NOT a tourist trap! I ordered the Tea Special. Also tried to get a Guiness or another pint, but they were out (said it was because of the hot weather... It was 75, which is nice :)) The service was quick and the food tasty... Fish was nicely battered. The chips, while ok, were nothing special. Seems like they were previously frozen! Fresh chips darkly fries would have garnered a 5 star. Visited Chippy Doon The Lane with a friend last week for lunch. We had originally intended to go to The Lab but we were inticed in after seeing the advertising boards. After a trek up the stairs (there's a lift too) you walk into the actual restaurant which is tastefully decorated, feeling warm and cosy on a cold, rainy day. We both ordered haddock suppers for £7.95 and when they arrived they were absolutely massive! The fish was tasty with crispy batter and nice freshly cooked chips (not greasy ones that you'd get from the chippy). One supper would've done the two of us so it's definitely good value for money and drinks are standard restaurant prices too. The staff were really friendly and attentive without hovering over us and the toilets were clean and tidy. Five star fish and chips! If you want really good fish and chips, go to Chippy. It's a bit hard to find because google locates it a the Royal Exchange square. You have to enter a small alley to the left if you go down Queen Street heading to the central station. Shortly after Royal Exchange Square. This is Haute Cuisine Fish and Chips. I went with my boyfriend on Monday night to The Chippy Doon the Lane as I had a voucher to use up for 2 fish teas. He hadn't been there before and it had been a couple of years since I'd been there. We were greeted straight away by the lovely female waitress who was there, and I'm sure has been for a few years as she definitely served me a couple of years ago, and we were taken to a table at the very back of the restaurant. It was relatively busy for a Monday night, there was another 8 or 9 tables and the place isn't exactly massive. I explained about our voucher (I had already booked ahead anyway) and the waitress explained the fish teas we could choose from. There was haddock, cod, lemon sole, etc. Not being the most adventurous with fish of any kind, I chose haddock, my boyfriend chose lemon sole for a change. I asked for gravy as a side. We asked for our tea to come after the meal and ordered some soft drinks while we were waiting. Our bread to go with the fish tea arrived at the same time as the drinks. The meals arrived within ten minutes and good lord was I happy we didn't have starters! The portions were huge. They come in a newspaper style box, my boyfriend had three separate pieces of lemon sole and a big pile of chips. My haddock was also very big, I did notice instantly the batter was quite a deep colour. As a rule, my mother who is a cook, always thinks this means the oil needs changed and it can make the batter quite hard. She was right here, as the tail end of the fish was solid and had almost no meat there, so I didn't even attempt to eat it. The rest of the fish was beautiful and the meat was thick, flaky and white. I hate going to a restaurant where you cut into the fish and it's more or less a thick layer of batter with a thin layer of fish! This wasn't the case with my fish, again the tail end was a bit too crispy but by that point I was insanely stuffed anyway. I liked the chips, but ate hardly any as I was so full. Also, absolutely no bones in either of our fish. Bonus! As once I find one bone I can't enjoy the fish for fear of finding another lodged in my gum!! However, no gravy arrived with the mains, and I had to wait about 8 minutes before I could get a member of staff's attention to say it was missing, the waitress came back with it immediately though. My boyfriend said his lemon sole was to die for, I tried it and an confirm it was lovely. I would definitely order this next time I go back. It was huge, the batter was light and crisp and not one part of it was over cooked. He couldn't finish it or the chips. When we were done, we had to wait around 20 minutes to have our plates cleared, and this only happened when I waived over a waiter and motioned at the plates, as he cleared them I asked for the bill. The couple next to us had been waiting equally as long as us to get their plates cleared away as well. It was a bit of a pain because I find when you're stuffed to the brim, you don't really want to stare at your food anymore! We then waited another ten minutes on the bill. The place had become a bit busier by then and there was a steady traffic of tables coming and going, with only 2 members of staff on. I can understand having been a waitress myself that it can be frustrating when you're mobbed, but I just felt like sitting at the back of the restaurant we were getting no attention at all and that the male member of the waiting team was washing tables and sorting cutlery rather than serving. These are all extremely important things to do, but I would think he could also look round the restaurant every so often to see if anyone needed served. This was the reason I didn't give it 5 stars. All in all, I did think these meals were worth the money, and even if I wasn't using a voucher I would have paid the £8.50-£10.50 for the fish teas. They were lovely and I'd definitely go back. read more

The Chippy Doon The Lane, is, well, exactly that. Located just off Buchannan Street, Glasgows premier shopping location, you'll find it hidden down the side of the trendy Princess Square. Up for offer is fish, and chips, and erm fish? The menu is maybe a little reminiscent of a post-pub trip down the local takeaway, but don't be put off! It pushes beyond your bog standard fish supper and serves up a simple but pleasant variety of main courses. Cajun Spiced Salmon, anyone? The haddock suppers come as big, hearty portions served in quirky cardboard trays - a homely touch which compliments the the sleek interior nicely. If anything, a fish supper should be both moist, light and crispy. The chips should be chunky, fluffy and fresh. It's a simple formula but seldom found and The Chippy Doon the Lane pulls it off. A stylish, fun and honest way to eat out after a weekend shopping frenzy. Just don't complain when the portions have you stranded at the bar like a beached whale. read more

Visited last night, perfect for bringing European tourists looking for good, fresh and tasty fish & chips. Great range, unfortunatley no draft beer on our visit but apart from that, does what it says on the tin. So few places offer this in the city, well done I will bring more Europeans. I come here for lunch every once in a while. Fish is very nice and the lunchtime special is decent value but the bread is garbage. They must get through about ten loaves a day and to think they could upgrade to a nice crusty bread for a relatively low cost increase makes you feel a bit swindled. It seems such a mismatch to the lovely fish, the delicious batter and homemade tartare. read more
