I and my family have been a member of DAM for several years with much satisfaction. Today's (December 13) experience, unfortunately, was a serious departure and will hopefully be addressed by staff. To be brief, I took the single worst tour of my life at 1:00pm, The Glory of Venice. Our tour guide was simply awful, falling far below minimal standards that presumably are set by the museum. Scheduled for 45 minutes, I departed after 15 minutes. I was astonished by our guide's lack of knowledge and professionalism. During the four works of art I saw before leaving, these things really happened: (1) She consistently mispronounced names of artists and simple words; (2) She pointed to male figures on three occasions and said "I don't know who that guy is"; (3) She pointed to a small replica of a church that was being held in the hand of a figure and said, "That's a little church, and I think it has something to do with Jerusalem, but I don't know for sure"; (4) She mixed up names of historical figures and admitted that they were "confusing" to her; (5) She held white 3x5 cards of notes and scrambled to study them while walking between paintings, often reading from them verbatim. To her credit, she was not rude or with bad intention; she simply was woefully unfit and not vetted for this responsibility. The experience was inauthentic, even amateurish to an embarassing degree and was a stark juxtaposition to the beautifully curated exhibit itself. Interestingly, I was reminded before the tour that my annual family membership expires at the end of the month. I'm glad that I did not renew yet because my family comes to town soon for the holidays, and we are excited to take this tour. I am hopeful that this situation will be dealt with appropriately and that it ultimately is viewed as an aberration. If so, I will likely stay the course. If not, I will reduce my commitment to occasional one-off visits, with fingers crossed at tour time. DAM needs to do much better. read more
