The signage is not great, especially if you are looking for the waterfall. But once found, it was a…read moregreat hike. There are 3 different trails, from 0.5m to 1m each way. You can go to the summit and get to see the beautiful river or head down to the waterfall. Unfortunately we went after a dry summer, and the waterfall was a very small trickle which was anticlimactic. But the hike was still fun. Warning: some paths are very narrow and can only take one person at a time. If going with kids, be warned. If your kids are prone to not listening and wandering, this is not the right hike. The paths are not paved and the risk of getting hurt if varying off-course are great. Since I mentioned about the signage...here are some tips. If you go to the general parking area, that is for the beach. It is very pretty to walk along and take photos or launch kayaks...but this is not the parking lot for the waterfall. Instead, go to the small parking lot on the other side of the road (do not pass the train tracks). If you go right, there is good signage that explains the 3 trails and markers. If you go left, it's the shortest 0.5m path directly to the waterfall (it's the red/blue path). Enjoy!

Osbornedale State Park has a hiking trail, fishing, picnic areas, and t nearby Osborne Homestead Museum. The prominent Osborne family owned numerous metal working and fabric product factories in the area. At the young age of 31, Frances Osborne, later Mrs. Waldo Kellogg, took over the family business when her father died in 1907. Miss Osborne decided to take over the family business instead of selling it. Additionally, it was contrary to the advice of the executers of her father's estate, and a brave undertaking for a woman in the early part of the century. Despite the prejudices against woman in business at that time, Mrs. Frances Osborne Kellogg was very successful in her many businesses and investments. By adhering to the belief that one should always buy land but never sell it. Mrs. Kellogg gradually acquired numerous separate farms which now comprise the 350 acre Osbornedale State Park, an unusually large property in the Derby-Ansonia area.

It's a little slice right next to the road, but they've packed a few things here. There's a playground, a basketball court, a couple of baseball diamonds, hiking, and a couple of monuments and memorials. A pretty little patch of tranquility in the winter.

The Ansonia Nature Center is a large park with a wildlife nature center. There are picnic shelters,…read morea large playground, and some large athletic fields. It has a well sized parking lot, enough to accomodate all the people that were picnicking that day. We were there for access to Naugatuck State Forest, which you can access from the Raptor Trail in the corner of the athletic fields. Overall, this is a nice park to enjoy, the only thing I would improve would to be to add a few more shaded picnic tables. The other thing to be aware of is that there's a gun club adjacent to the park, so be prepared to hear a lot of gunfire while you're there.

Veteran's Memorial Park is a recreational park located in downtown Shelton. Most of the community's…read moreevents are held are. The park is beautiful and right by the water so it's a great environment for picnics and just a day to relax. The food truck festival was hosted here like every other year. There were a good amount of food trucks this year but none really caught my eye except the Fried Oreo truck. I've never tried a Fried Oreo before. I know, I know. People are going to say how haven't I tried a Fried Oreo before. I don't eat sweet items and really haven't since I've been a child. The first bite of the Fried Oreo was delightful. Crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. It was like an explosion went of in my mouth. I really enjoyed it. My son had Fried Dough as he didn't really see anything that he wanted.

There are a few ways to access this park, we decided to go from the Ansonia Nature Center. The transition over to State Forest is pretty subtle, mainly with some markings on the trees. This park is also adjacent to some watershed land, that is also marked really well. This park has some nice hiking trails, with a lot of different loop options. We ended up doing a 10k (6 miles) hike, on the white and purple loop trails. The trails are nicely blazed, and there's a really good variety of trees. We went through some hardwoods and some pine forest, and there were lots of plants and some water views of the reservoir at various points along the hike. It's not too strenuous elevation wise, which was nice for a moderate hike. Mountain biking is allowed in the park, and we saw several people out for a ride, so it seems a pretty popular location for biking, and the trails seem not overly eroded. My only complaint is this park is adjacent to a gun club, so for a good chunk of the hike (mostly the white trail) was done to the sound of near constant gunfire. It's not the most tranquil thing, especially if you're sensitive to that sound.

I like the humans that go here and everyone is always watching there dogs so that's a very good thing. I don't like the fact I see poop around because I clean it up so there are a few not picking up after there dog.

This is a small park on the corner of Constitution Boulevard and Long Hill Avenue in Shelton, CT…read more It's a field of grass surrounded by a paved trail which is good for walking people or dogs. There is a tiny parking lot in one corner. There is a tiny fence all around the place, but I'd recommend not playing ball with kids in the park if they kick it a long way with the roads so close-by. It's a nice place for adults or walking the dog. For the kids, I'd recommend going down the Hill to Veteran's Park a.k.a. The Riverwalk.
