Cheeky, irreverent, subversive and deceitfully honest, this magazine covers (or rather uncovers) aspects of Phoenix that are much less obvious than than the chic trendiness of other magazines and is so much more interesting because of this. Issues can be hard to come by since they only come out with new issues every 3 months but their site claims you can reserve issues and have them sent to you for a nominal fee. I should say that I wrote an article for hoozdo for their first issue. All writing and photography for this magazine is contributed by volunteers for the love of the game and for the love of Phoenix. Bottom line -- great read with a true subversive, big-city edge.

And we've all picked up a magazine, like LivingEtc or Dwell, that is trying to sell us the hippest modern home furnishings for that architecturally significant flat we'll never own. You may be able to think of one that covers only our local art, artists, business owners, and developers, but I can't. But there seems to be only one that brings you all of that in one spot. Kontakt is filled with architectural and interior design ideas, personal fashion, news on upcoming and past events, They cover new business developments and what to look forward to in your urban life. They bring together everything that is exciting about the Valley, with insight to who is making it happen, what else they are making happen and generally before any of it has happened. It is a really good magazine and definitely worth subscribing to and supporting. I think it was once said that "Weight+Shinny=Street Cred!" and I think that holds true in this case.

In full disclosure, my friend is the editor of this newspaper. But she's always trusted my honest…read moreopinion, and she knows I'd give one here. When the paper first started out it was a solid 2 stars. In the last few years it's definitely worked it's way up the charts. The Write Up is one of Phoenix's very few Urban Newspapers, or as they are known in other areas, Black newspapers. The Write Up does a good job of knowing the area, so they also have reporters covering a Latino area of interest as well. They try to cover a broad spectrum of National and local issues in their stories along with some local opinion columns and locally created comics. They have even sponsored several local events like poetry night and Soul Skate (so much fun!). I have been shocked how many national artists have sat down with folks from the paper to give them interviews. I don't know how much of that is that this is a cool paper and how much it is that there just aren't a bunch of media outlets for the black/hip-hip/ethnically diverse community. While I am still looking for them to grow more, and find their voice a bit more succinctly, I think they are doing pretty great for paper that's only been around about 3 years. It's definitely worth a read to find out more about what's going on around town if you're into the scene.
