I stopped by Downtown Girl just as Ute (pronounced oo-tah, she's German) and her husband Tom were closing up. I told them my story and they insisted I come in for some shopping. Downtown Girl carries all sorts of accessories for the feminine urbanite: from Fleur-de-Lis necklaces to soft, furry scarves, bright handbags, and intricate jewelery. If you're looking for a statement fashion piece, you will find it here. Everything sold in Downtown Girl is hand-selected by Ute. You'll definitely be getting a one-of-a-kind accessory and for a very reasonable price. I purchased several glass nailfiles as gifts for my best girlfriends. Ute provided wrapping for each individual item, complete with bright violet tissue paper, a filigree gift bag, and a sticker with her shop's logo. All my gifting needs were cared for under one roof. Downtown Girl has been in Montgomery for the past seven years. But oh my gosh, they have some to-die-for knits here! Do you ever find yourself watching a well-styled movie or TV show and you're thinking, "that's the outfit I want! It's so effortless and chic." This is exactly the place where you will find those effortless and chic looks. I'd head back in here before sweater season officially arrives to find some truly unique items.

One room in the back was filled with an assortment of accessories, like jewelry, hair barrettes, and hats. Incredibly well organized, this shop is like strolling through a fashion museum. Prices were a little higher than expected, and although there were two salesladies in the store, neither of them acknowledged that I was there. That bumped Vintage Marketplace down to three stars. I'd still stop back for a browse though. The window display changes frequently (and, in my opinion, is the most elaborate in Hyde Park), so something new will likely draw me in again.

The only things I could say that need improvement is having a service list posted or on hand that the techs can give to customers. Obsess is tucked away in a semi-subterranean location in the heart of Montgomery…read more I found the largest selection of French Connection that I've found outside of, well, a French Connection store. I highly recommend coming here for the FC. The inventory here includes styles suitable mostly for the 18-25 year old set, but I did find some things I would consider more age-appropriate for myself as well. The boutique was having a 15% off entire inventory promotion when I was there, but other than that, everything mostly goes for MSRP. They do have a few sale racks in the front where everything is $30. I highly recommend sifting through these racks as there were some nice garments hidden between the oddly-sized, oddly-patterned cast offs. You can also find apparel by Splendid, Kensie, Joe's Jeans and Citizens of Humanity.
