Each area is categorized by color: blues to the right, browns and whites straight ahead, violets in the back of the store. Open doorways weave in and out of the dividing wall, allowing customers to float freely from continent to continent... er... section to section. Beautiful, plush scarves caught my eye, as well as some of the old writing table decorations. One room in the back was filled with an assortment of accessories, like jewelry, hair barrettes, and hats. Incredibly well organized, this shop is like strolling through a fashion museum. Prices were a little higher than expected, and although there were two salesladies in the store, neither of them acknowledged that I was there. That bumped Vintage Marketplace down to three stars. I'd still stop back for a browse though. The window display changes frequently (and, in my opinion, is the most elaborate in Hyde Park), so something new will likely draw me in again.

A few minutes later, two women entered and were immediately greeted and offered help. The double standard was obvious. Only after my expression made it clear I was unimpressed did the employee finally say something -- claiming the other women had an appointment. That excuse doesn't change the fact that I wasn't even acknowledged when I walked in. Greeting a customer takes seconds, and the indifference I experienced spoke volumes. I make it a point to support small, local businesses when I travel, but this kind of dismissive and selective service is unacceptable. If this is how they treat customers, I would strongly suggest taking your business elsewhere.

The shop was buzzing and busy, but the staff was so friendly and we didn't have to wait too long. They even suggested going to get a cup of coffee from down the street. There were plenty of bracelet options - silver, gold, and gold plated. I felt like they had something for every price range. You could get rings, necklaces, bracelets, and more! I personally chose a gold bracelet with an initial charm, and Elaine B. put it on me herself :) While waiting for our turn, we shopped around the store, and there were lots of beautiful, minimalist jewelry items for sale that I LOVED. True to form, they offer much of the same kitchy nick-nacks many of the locals might try and sell you in Arusha except at better prices! The shoes as soon as you walk in are probably the one exception to this which I found to be more expensive. In Tanzania these same shoes cost about $3.00 with bartering. However, they are unique and one of kind so spending a little extra might be worth it. The clothes selection in the back has quite an array. Sadly, most of them are not truly authentic. The ones that are truly Aftrican style will cost you upwards of $80-100 but they are beautiful, yet not well made. Overall, the gifts are unique and truly from Tanzania or Kenya. You can easily find something for anyone you might be shopping for, including yourself. If nothing else, its fun just to walk around and look at the stuff.

I highly recommend coming here for the FC. The inventory here includes styles suitable mostly for the 18-25 year old set, but I did find some things I would consider more age-appropriate for myself as well. The boutique was having a 15% off entire inventory promotion when I was there, but other than that, everything mostly goes for MSRP. They do have a few sale racks in the front where everything is $30. I highly recommend sifting through these racks as there were some nice garments hidden between the oddly-sized, oddly-patterned cast offs. You can also find apparel by Splendid, Kensie, Joe's Jeans and Citizens of Humanity.
