I am visiting in the Dubuque area and was in desperate need of a haircut. The first salon I called was booked, but they referred me to Designworks. Fortunately, I was able to get in the same day. Penny was my stylist. I had very long, unruly hair, and wanted it about shoulder length. I showed her pics of styles I liked. Also, I asked her to do what she thought would look good. I love Designworks! Jerica cuts my hair and it looks healthy and beautiful every time. I've seen her colors too. She's truly a hair artist. She's friendly and makes you feel comfortable. I love the pre scalp and neck massage. It's a nice touch. She waxes my eyebrows as well. The cold stones applied to my eyebrows afterwards helps want redness. As a licensed cosmetologist myself, I understand the importance of professionalism, product knowledge, and thorough consultation with your guest in addition to skill. Bri'Anna demonstrates all of those qualities. I am a particularly difficult client at times and I change my mind a lot. Bri'Anna is always patient and willing to try my new ideas. I never feel like she's trying to "push" products in me just to get a sale. She knows what each product does, and gives good recommendations when I ask her opinion. She also does great pedicures. Love this place. Now that I've got a real job and hope to take care of what little hair I have left, I must confess that I'm totally okay with dropping $27 on a haircut. But despite paying twice what I would at a Cost Cutters kind of place, I feel it's all good. Get a quick shoulder rub, some scalp massaging, a wash, a cut, a rinse, a style. It might take an hour, but it's a good. I highly recommend my girl Heidi. Super nice, easy to talk to. Each time she asks, "What are we going to do today?" I tell her, "Make me handsome." Ashlynn Johnson absolutely fried my hair with bleach. I first had blonde ombre, which could have been blended much better and I had a small spot of blonde on the top of my head where it shouldn't have been. So, I went back in less than a week later and I asked that she dye all of my hair blonde, to match the blonde on the lower half of my hair. She took 6 and 1/2 hours. We started at 1:30 in the afternoon and ended at 7 pm. I should have known something was wrong. Probably about 4 hours of that was having her foil my hair, she used 150 foils. She also left the lightener (bleach) on my hair for that entire amount of time as she continued to place foils. The expert, Janet Lust with Lust Beautyworks in Madison WI with 20 years experience who I paid hundreds of dollars to fix my hair told me that foiling with lightener should never take more than an hour and that leaving the lightener on my hair that long is what fried my hair. Not only that, but my hair was many different shades of blonde, ranging from brassy, orange, icy and ashy. She neglected my roots (brown, then super icy blonde in comparison to the rest of my head) and my bottom layer of hair, as it had the most brown roots. That is not all over blonde. My hair was a disaster. I now feel very lied to because while Ashlynn was rinsing my hair, toning it and blow drying it, she continued to tell me how it looked great, when it most definitely does not and looks like she didnt know what she was doing and didnt know when to stop. One of the owners, Julie, I believe, came to look at my hair as Ashlynn was foiling and she should have stayed to see how it turned out dry. The $113 refund is only a third of what it cost me today to fix my poor strands. Beware of this hairdresser. My hair is going to take months to recover but thankfully Janet restored it back to being shiney and smooth. Ashlynn made my hair so rough that i could barely run my fingers through it in the shower WITH conditioner. She was nice in conversation but nice doesnt cut it when you ruin my hair. Designworks, I used to be a happy customer but now I am very disappointed, please make sure that if an owner has a suspicion that their employee may be making mistakes, that they stay to help the poor customer out. I I was visiting my son in Dubuque couple weeks ago and I made myself an appointment at DesignWorks for a pedicure. I have had quite a few pedicures in my time and this one was by far the worst. She whose name I can't remember I think I would remember it if I heard it but nevertheless she took the easy way out she had to miss soak my feet first and then she took a half a file and touched couple of my nails with it and then she took a big thing that she used on the bottom of my feet to remove calluses. I don't have calluses I have pretty soft feet however it doesn't matter because she really didn't do anything for very long. And then she dried each foot leg and began to give me a very soft massage on my legs and my feet not a very good one and way too long. I had already picked out the nail polish. So she proceeded to polish my nails. And then she was done. It cost me $49 plus a tip and I will never go back.I have thought about calling and letting the salon know that they're not getting their moneys worth and neither are their clients but I haven't done that yet. And I doubt that I will. I don't want anybody to lose their job but I do believe if you're going to do a Job you should try to do a good job. I had never been to Designworks before, but I had heard so many good things about them. I decided to give them a try. I was scheduled for a full head foil and cut with Ashlynn. I hadn't had my hair colored in over 6 months, so my regrowth was quite long. My hair had grown so much that it looked like two completely different colors on the top and bottom. I told her I wanted to go as blonde as possible considering my regrowth situation. I knew it would take a lot of work but she seemed more then happy to take on the task. My hair is also very long, thick, and had several inches of damage I wanted cut off. She patiently foiled my entire head of hair. After the rinse, cut, and blow dry, I was more then pleased with the results. The foils blended perfectly. You could not even tell I had inches of regrowth prior. She took off just enough hair during the cut to make it healthy again, but not too short. The long layers she added really helped frame my face perfectly. I will definitely be going back to her. I will also be recommending her to anyone looking for a personable and talented stylist! read more
