The island has a large craft industry devoted to making fudge in a traditional manner, creating portions on cold marble slabs. Mackinac Island is the destination of both the annual Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, and the annual Port Huron to Mackinac Boat Race. A unique local ordinance passed in 1895 prohibits the use of any motor vehicles on the island. The only exceptions to this are city emergency vehicles (ambulance, police cars and fire trucks), city service vehicles & snowmobiles in the winter. Today the most common means of travel is by foot, bicycle, horse or horse-drawn carriage. Roller skates and roller blades are also allowed, except in the downtown area.

We made the mistake of planning our first visit during the height of tourist season and staying in a hotel on main street. It reminded me of D'Land (the workers are referred to as "cast members") all from off island with bristly attitudes. I don't blame them. The tourists are rude, self centered, sidewalk hogs, bicycling nightmares. I try to connect with locals only to find them non existent. One fudge shop (one shop of too many) cast member told me the island is better after Labor Day. It's too bad that Trip Advisor, Expedia and travel sites are shoving Mackinac Island for Fall visits down our throat and will ruin a beautiful charming island for tourists who care about the locals, who care about what we are doing to the environment. My husband and I will venture elsewhere.
