Let's try dancing again! OK, maybe dancing isn't HIS favorite activity, but I'm the one scheduling it, right? What choice does he have?" This birthday outing was basically a bowling ball with the name Erin on it. A did a quick web search and found that on Friday nights, the Dance Scene has an hour lesson on a short routine within a style followed by a dance party (they're separate admission fees but can be combined - we paid for both). On date night, we arrived about ten minutes late to find the group working on an International Rumba routine, meaning, we were desperately lost and unprepared*. Since we couldn't follow the routine steps and the other people there were having some success, my husband didn't feel comfortable or happy staying for the dance party afterward. This was HIS birthday outing, after all, so I buried my disappointment and we decided to leave and find another activity. Anna the owner noticed we were having trouble keeping up and she was kind enough to offer us a free private lesson to make up for our bad experience (which, again, was totally our fault by virtue of arriving late!!). I didn't expect my husband to be interested, but we took her up on her offer and had a great time re-learning some basics of foxtrot and swing styles, and practicing our form. Our "frame" is pretty flimsy and our stride lengths probably never match, but I think we've improved! I'm personally excited to go back for another group lesson (though I might be going by myself... I'll just introduce myself to one of the silver foxes without a partner! Don't tell my husband). In regards to the private lesson: as a professional classical musician and private teacher of same, I've experienced hundreds of lessons from both the teacher and student perspective. I've got many friends and colleagues who teach as well, and whose methods (and results) I've observed firsthand. I've taught and been taught enough to know that, for learning efficiency and depth of subject knowledge, instruction must be tailored to the student. This probably sounds trite; ALL teachers would say that they tailor instruction to the needs of each student. MOST teachers, from my experience, don't tailor instruction. I wish I was better at it, myself. It's the hardest part of teaching. From a lesson alongside my husband, I observed that Anna does that gear-switching with the best of them. I can't recommend her services highly enough - literally, I'm not an experienced enough dancer to give her an objective professional review on how good a dancer she is. But I CAN give this review as one teacher to another: Anna is champion of pedagogy. *In regards to the group lessons being too advanced for us, Anna did assure us that they usually have two instructors in a group class and try to accommodate different dancing levels in the same evening to the extent possible. We came in too late and on the wrong night (her co-instructor had an outside commitment).

The atmosphere was welcoming, friendly, and casual. The season had started but Lisa, the instructor, and the other students were very accommodating in helping us catch up to where the rest of the class was. Lisa is an excellent instructor too - lots of experience, great at explaining things, and very patient. All things we really needed haha. We were worried that we wouldn't be able to catch up, but it turned out to be okay! We had a lot of fun, both at the barre and even learning some choreography from a ballet we both recently saw. There were all levels of students, but each level seemed to be catered to just fine even though we were all mixed in together. Some exercises were adjusted for the different levels and we could do what was comfortable for us. I've taken other adult ballet classes that have been great too, but if you're looking for something doesn't require commitment, this is ideal. Most of all, you really can't beat the price. Recitals are an option (though we have decided not to perform haha), and there are other adult classes too. We're both really excited for our next class and also to check out some of those others soon!

A variety of classes are offered 7 days a week but unfortunately this past Sunday's were cancelled due to some special event they had (website's schedule is up to date). To book a class is super easy; choose which class you want and it tells you how many open spots are left. You pay via credit card and receive an email confirmation. Upon arrival you just go to either of the studios where the classes are held. I booked a spin class and the instructor came up to introduce herself and asked my name and said she saw it on her roster. As for the class, it was very good and the instructor (Jill) was super nice and chatted with her a bit after. Facility is very clean and the bikes were in excellent condition. The only con is it is very hard to find as there is no signage indicating where the center is located (you see the theater upon arrival). I stopped and asked what appeared to be some city road/construction workers and one was able to give me directions. Saw the building with a huge parking lot and assumed that was it as I saw some people going in who were in workout gear and carrying gym bags. Once you initially find it you are good to go and know what/where to go.

It's understandable that they need to raise the rates but it's more than a quarter higher than what it initially used to be. In addition to that they're charging a $40 nonrefundable enrollment fee. All these cost combine make it un affordable for the majority of people in the city. I can see increasing the rates but to add a $40 enrollment fee for something that takes the lady behind the desk 30 seconds to issue. Your enrollment fee is ridiculous. I will be seeking my membership elsewhere and it's such a shame because the facility itself is beautiful, although I'm also frustrated with staff that they don't enforce handwashing or wiping down the machines after use so increasing risk of staph, Mrsa, and other illnesses and disease

My issue, however, is with the abhorrent waiting area & lobby. With as many families and children who enter and exit the building, there is zero excuse not to have built a larger more accommodating front lobby. Kids and teens kick off their shoes and leave them EVERYWHERE while the lack of seating forces some parents to wait in the car (keep in mind, there is only curbside parking unless you leave your vehicle across the road in a CVS lot). I wish they could knock out a wall, reduce the size of the main studio or figure something out. Again, not much thought was put in to this aspect of the facility. While I stress that the actual instruction is outstanding, there is very little organization when it comes to ushering students aged 3-6 in & out of their lesson. This age requires guidance and direction, but in between classes is a free-for-all. Instructors should retrieve, line up and lead their students into whichever area they're heading to. Given the aforementioned situation with the waiting area, it'd be a huge help in reducing some of that front lobby chaos. Ms. Pat is incredibly knowledgeable, kind hearted and direct with both her staff and the families who attend. It's a great studio, especially for first timer little ones and I recommend DDA to anyone seeking options for dance. Just be aware of the surrounding factors listed above and you won't be as surprised/frustrated as I've seen some parents be.
