I've previously been a little dumbfounded by the raving reviews and the ridiculous queues out the front of Devon Cafe (in Surry Hills). It just didn't measure up to the hype. However, I was keen to give them another shot and was therefore quite pleased to hear about their new venue in Waterloo - Devon on Danks. The location, the interior, the ambiance, the staff - all top notch. But it really comes down to the food and coffee for me. And I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. The soft shell crab burger was delicious. In my personal opinion, I thought the nori was a little odd, but it did lend a unique aspect to the sandwich which you certainly wouldn't find anywhere else. The soft shell crab was not generous (you won't get the portion of crab you see at Bowery Lane!), but what was there was tasty and crispy and the fish roe added that additional flavour that again, differentiated it from any other soft shell crab sandwich. Also tried the spanner crab pasta, which was pretty good too. Handmade pasta, cooked to perfection. A beautiful garlicky sauce with a slight kick to it. The portion was fairly decent as well. Lastly, the coffee. Oh the coffee. I've found that despite the high quality of coffee in the Surry Hills / Waterloo / Alexandria area, there are very few who get it spot on (like seriously spot on). John Smith is one of them, Single Origins used to be). Devon on Danks has now been added to the ranks (in my opinion). They do a fabulous piccolo - kudos to the two baristas who churn out consistently excellent coffee each time (I've been a handful of times just in the last week!). Highly recommend you pay them a visit. And if you do, don't forget to try some of their baked goods. The donut balls are amazing - especially the milo and the raspberry!. read more
