Any time I travel to visit family in the area, Dexter Queen is a must stop on the itinerary. I have been coming here since I was a kid, visiting from St. Louis and I am sure part of it is nostalgia but even with the change in ownership, the pig sandwich still has me coming back. Lots of changes to the building over the years but my pig basket is a constant. The pig sandwich comes with pulled pork, a cabbage/slaw, and the hot mustard sauce. The basket includes a generous portion of crinkle cut fries. Sometimes I order a hot fudge malt but usually want to save all the room for the sandwich. With trips to Dexter decreasing over the years, I have taken to ordering a bunch of sandwiches and freezing them when I get home. It works better if I get the slaw on the side and freeze that separately. You can also purchase bottles of the hot mustard sauce. The fries I eat right away with my first sandwich. I ordered a sweet tea the other day and got a sweet tea with cherry flavor Another day my husband's lotta pig didn't have any sauce, which is his favorite park. They do give you plenty of fries. And sometimes getting refills is a hassle, especially if you have kids. You have to walk your but back to the counter for refills. The nachos aren't very good either. I went to Dexter Queen and ordered a cheeseburger basket and a chicken strip basket for my girlfriend. They brought out a burger with fries and chicken sandwich with fries, which was fine because people make mistakes. I ordered a new chicken strip basket and ate the chicken sandwich while I waited and my girlfriend just had some fries while she waited for the chicken strip basket. They then brought out another chicken sandwich so I told them I ordered the chicken strip basket twice and got sandwiches both times. They took the sandwich and fries back. Had to wait for the food for the third time just to get burnt tenders with no fries. One of the workers asked if we had gotten free ice cream, and we said no. We figured they would give us a coupon or tell us we could have some but after five or so more minutes of waiting, there was nothing so we left. Opened the cheeseburger later to discover no cheese. Definitely not going back. Menu was not very clear on what you were ordering. Items are named "lotta pig" and such, staff refused to elaborate. Turns out "lotta pig" is apparently a dry sandwich. When asked for sauce, staff wanted to charge a quarter for a container of sauce. Fries are not home made. Drinks are not particularly good. This is one of our favorite places to grab a bite to eat when we're home. Thank goodness this was not our first time visiting. The staff were clearly not having a good day. I asked if the onion rings were hand battered or store bought and she said," huh, we get them from a box." And when they brought our food to us they dropped several of the fries and all but threw the tray on our table along with our drinks. My family and I have been coming here for years for their dipped cones. I don't think I will be spending my money here again, though. There is one female employee who is always kind and goes above and beyond to make sure the experience is pleasant, which I greatly appreciate. However; all of the other young female employees here have been extremely rude to my mother and I when trying to order a side of something they no longer serve. Neither my mother or I were angry or upset, we were understanding. But the staff treated us like we were asking for free food and were so rude, I am still bothered and somewhat shocked. We frequent this place often with our children and have always loved it. Staff members walking around giving my mother dirty looks while we were still there is so unnecessary. The food is mediocre but the service is so disappointing and unnecessarily disrespectful. Don't waste your money here. read more

I love little local places and this for the bill perfectly. It's basically DQ meets BBQ, with some old time local charm. I can't vouch for the BBQ but the ice cream is typical soft serve. Good but not great. Where this place place really shines is the decor with some great, whimsical paintings of pigs and it's off beat, local quaintness. Places like this are becoming harder and harder to find as chains continue to push out the old school, local places. Dexter Queen is a semi-play on Dairy Queen, but there are vast differences. For one, Dexter Queen has infinitely better BBQ. For another, their chocolate shakes make us week in the knees. It changed hands a couple of years ago, and the new owner lived up to every expectation we had from the previous owner. I am thankful that this place is still great! I remember getting a special trip here in the second grade with Shawn Guethle when we finished a special reading project before the end of the year. The ambiance is still the same. They even have the same two arcade games in the corner they had 30 years ago...and they still work! It's one of the most-requested ice cream places my kids have. The only thing I would tell any newcomer is to watch out for the BBQ sandwhiches. They can get a bit spicy! Also, if you don't like a mustard base with your BBQ, then you will not like this place at all. Otherwise, it may become a vital part of your Dexter lunch/dinner options. Love the Lotta Pigs!!! Sort of a hole-in-the-wall place. The Lotta Pig sandwiches have chopped, not pulled, pork with coleslaw in a mustard sauce. It made my hubby think of childhood BBQ from Memphis. These are not runny, you put your own sauce on them. They also will keep for lunch the next day! The shakes are delicious too. I love this place. I normally do not like BBQ and I seldom eat pork, but my boss got me a "pig basket" there one day and I was starving, plus I didn't want to seem unthankful. I do not like sauces but on this pork sandwich they have a yellow mustard based hot sauce that I actually loved. They also put slaw on their sandwiches, which I would never have ordered for myself, but found I really liked it. Now I am hooked on these things even though I know pork is bad for me. I was a fairly regular customer, 2 to 4 times a month, but after being double charged for my food and then treated like i was trying to scam them even after showing them my transaction list twice I will never go back. I gave them whatever they stuck to the bag for a receipt and explained what happened but no matter how much proof I showed it was still somehow my fault. I was told that I must not have had enough money the first time I was charged so that's probably what the second charge was. What, how does that work? If there's one thing I miss about living in podunk Middle America, it's Dexter Queen. I can't even begin to describe how a Lotta-Pig sandwich tastes. There's definitely nothing else like it!
