Vinyl albums are in wooden cases separated by either letters or band names. Their main thing is metal, but they have a healthy selection of 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s rock, jazz, blues, and more. They also have some unique Japanese pressings you wouldn't ordinarily see. They also have a selection of tapes, and I think a few CDs. There are a few items of memorabilia. You can listen to any album you want, as long as it isn't new. All-in-all, this is a great used record store (with some new). And, while mainly catering to metal, they have a very good selection of other styles and genres of music.

The shop itself has that classic record store vibe, the smell of old vinyl, yes, even a little moldy at times, which I personally love :) and rows of crates you can get lost in for hours. What really makes the place stand out is the team. D, who has helped me several times including today, deserves a big shout-out. He's patient, super knowledgeable, and always has a great attitude. Today he went above and beyond being extra patient with my order, and I really appreciate that kind of service. Shops like this thrive because of people like him. The stock here is fantastic, excellent condition, fair prices, and always something new to discover. I live in the Bronx and they are absolutely worth the trip out to Brooklyn. When I can't make it in person, I also order from their Discogs page and the shipping is always smooth. If you love vinyl, this is the kind of shop that makes collecting special. Great records, service, and always a great reason to come back.

I've passed this shop so many times as it's just one shop separating them from Ali's Trinidad Roti Shop (which I'm always at as I love) and don't know how I missed it! Only today when my memory door flew open did I actually realize where I was! 2015, it stands a mere resemblance of its former glory, but somehow amongst the weakness, there's a sense of pride. Almost like your granny on her rocking chair relating stories of her illustrious youth. You'll still find small DJ and entertainer's gadgets such as bolts, screws and many other items I have no clue what they're used for except it's to do with music systems and mics. If you're an Island and Trini music lover, you'll have a ball gazing at albums while listening to sweet Calypso and Parang music (if you ask). A bit of history: Calypso music is an Afro-Caribbean music with origins in West Africa. It's a rhythmic, grassroots (so to speak) music which documents the then and now, socio and political atmosphere of Trinidad and Tobago either with serious undertones or picong (to tease or joke). Calypso or Kaiso procreated with funk and soul and gave birth to Soca music. Parang music is a popular Trinidad and Tobago music which originated from nearby Venezuela. There are shows and competitions but the real deal is when serenaders go to the homes of family and friends paranging at night during the Chistmas season. It is sung in Spanish or patois and is the mother of Soca parang which is a combination of both genres. Hearing a good parang singer live can be a truly emotional experience. Well it is for me and many others. Get a copy of Parang music at Charlie's, ask for Daisy Voisin, maybe you'll get lucky and have this experience. My stop at Charlie's like I said, was like a visit with grandparents. I was emotional, excited and I'll visit again and again but I don't want to live with them. Is that just me? I mean it's kind of ridiculous how much talent is on one label. And this is talent that makes you want to move your body... often! For a minute I thought I had popped into Spirit of Halloween considering the cobwebs that covered their paltry selection of CDs. I get it, it's a dead format but it's hard to fathom why FYE is still with us as they specialize in nothing in particular. This joint makes Hot Topic look like Nordstrom. Two thin stars.

I admit I was more of a Suncoast guy when it came to buying media, but if there was an FYE nearby I'd stop into it for fun. When I saw the FYE signage in Menlo Park mall I definitely wanted to check it out partly out of nostalgia than anything else. Interestingly, they've dropped the acronym logo (F.Y.E., which stands for "For Your Entertainment) and it's just "FYE" now. FYE is not quite the spectacle of its predecessors. Its layout is basically a large rectangle with shelves on the outer edges and islands in the middle with the cashier counter off to the left in the middle. Its "decor" mostly relies on the various T-shirts and product package art on display throughout the store. This is not terrible, mind you. They have a wide selection of products so there's a lot to catch your eye, but I do remember their older format focusing a bit more on the decor of the store itself. To be honest, I'm kind of shocked FYE still exists (then again, I can say the same for Gamestop). In the old days it had a heavy focus on media (CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes etc.), but to adapt and survive in the modern era they have diversified. They are now more of a pop culture store including media (Blu-Rays, Vinyl etc.), toy store (action figures, Hot Wheels etc.), apparel shop (T-Shirts mostly) and even snack store (candy, chips etc.). What I have been surprised about is that over the past two years, they have begun to carry *more* product and diversify. Seriously, 3-4 years ago the store looked mostly empty, the air smelled stale and it looked like it was getting ready to close. Now it looks like a store with some life to it, and that's a good thing. Malls need more shops like this! It can't all be about over-expensive clothing and electronics. Much to my surprise, during my last two trips to this store I have found toys I have looked for at other stores like Target but never found. One was a Transformer, the other was a Hot Wheels car, so I make this a regular stop now when I'm in the mall. The staff members I've dealt with are friendly and efficient but I do feel bad for them. During both of my last visits the entire store is seemingly staffed by one person only and that's a lot to put on one person. This is a fun stop that is quite different than most stores in the mall. Definitely worth dropping by!
