This is for the international students' office. We currently house an international student in our home and had some questions, so we actually visited the office a few times this year. Everytime we're there though, the "director" (that's what they call him) is busy with his spouse/wife and small children running around in the office. We couldn't get our answers. DVC is a great. Better than LMC/CCC by far. Parking sucks but one day the district can make a leveled parking garages like Ohlone. I attended in 2018 I regretted not finishing when COVID hit but now in the middle of the 2020's I feel like DVC overall is better quality with staff & courses & resources than it was back in the 2010's. I NEVER attended this school. I tried to reg for classes when I lived in the area in 2017-2018. I dropped the class before withdrawal date. Surprise surprise, years later in 2024 their registrar staff starts harassing me to pay for a class I owe money on. I said I never attended this college. Guess what! They garnished my tax return. So, yeah. I guess be careful with your money and taking classes because if you supposedly owe they won't tell you until years later and then garnish your tax refund. read more

Absolute garage. They might as well start offering Undergrad Degrees because even the most general classes require a bunch of useless pre-reqs, prolonging your time here even more than necessary. Counseling appointments are booked out until half-way through the semesters and then what you thought was going to be a 1-hour appointment, ends up turning into you getting rushed out the door in 5 minutes. Meanwhile, the counselor is banging away on their keyboard inputting two classes per semester developing a 5-year General Ed plan. Absolute waste of time, money and energy. LMC is even worse. Horrendous campus in the middle of a war-zone with a spent fuel pool for a pond outside from which they've dragged dead bodies from (true story). Final summation, commute to a school that lets you get the general stupidity done in time, hassle-free (if such a thing exists with these places), so that you can get on with your life/career. read more

My kids took classes in DVC, after graduating from Northgate High School. I believe it was a great experience for them. Both kids improved their learning skills and transferred to the UC system. DVC invests into the engineering wing, I hear they have nice place to study and resources to support the students. Very happy with the decision to send the kids to DVC and not spending $$$ on UC's for the first few years. Keep doing the great job! read more

This college is an absolute mess. It's impossibly hard to get the classes you need and most people end up spending about 4 years here for that exact reason. Their math program is abysmal due to a lack of decent professors. Their handling of their classes during coronavirus has made the school even worse, as most professors and classes assign homework as if you are only taking their class alone. I hope to graduate from this joke of a university soon but quiet honestly the way things have been going I may get stuck here another year, which is likely exactly what they want anyways. School is okay. Not really on board with the whole social justice aspect of the school. I mean seriously shutting down a bathroom because someone wrote a racial slur? Wait until these kids get introduced to the real world where it's mean and doesn't care how you feel. A lot of the professors get off on going on random tangents and rants about politics and religion when it has nothing to with the class. The very opposite of professional is how I would describe my professors. If I wanna hear politics I'll take a political class. I don't wanna hear about religion and politics from an English or anthropology teacher. Welcome to DVC where your opinion only matters and isn't mocked when you agree with everyone else. I think my only complaint, and reason for this review is the counseling office staff. The counselors are great! The problem is the rude, and demeaning staff behind the phone or desk. The way I was talked to over the phone when scheduling, or making an appointment was never good. I'm not sure if it's the work stress with dealing with incoming calls, or etc. Ultimately I know that it can be a stressful job, but that shouldn't be funneled into students or anyone trying to check in their appointments, make changes, or ask questions. read more

If I could give this school zero stars, I would. I hold nothing against some of the teachers that I had, but most were overly political and biased in their grading, not basing grade on skill or capability at all. Most teachers were also slow in communicating with me directly when I asked questions via email (even though I made sure to contact them in their preferred method and office hours)! Besides that, the staff is awful at communicating, especially about important issues that I had, such as problems they had with processing my FAFSA and problems with choosing classes. The DSS program was incredibly unhelpful since they couldn't guarantee any of the accommodations I needed, rendering any accommodations they agreed to give me absolutely useless! There were very few times that I felt welcome at DVC, in or out of the classroom setting. I am thoroughly unimpressed with the quality of the school and very frustrated with what they put me though! read more

So coming to DVC you really should know what you're getting into. Registering online is the only way to do it, if you do it in person or come to school late, you'll stand in line for a couple hours and most likely never get a class. There is no Health area on campus, but a Planned Parenthood person supposedly comes to the Trophy room once a month. Do not take Astronomy at DVC. Both teachers are well known as being flakes who cannot teach their subject. Take bio. See two different counselors every semester, one might give you bad advice. "Dropping in" to the counseling office is great because you can do this quickly. There are scholarships at DVC. Check the website. Books are cheaper across the street, don't shop at the book store unless you have to. I hope this helps you because I wish I'd known all of this when I started. read more

Here with all the 19 yr olds! Diablo Valley College, or DVC as it is known, is one of the 120 Community Colleges set-up in the state of California. It enrolls over 7,000 people at any given time, so it is larger than a lot of universities across the country. It is about 60 years old, built mid last century. The campus is good sized, and it has its own pond full of ducks. There a host of different buildings, so you know this isn't HIgh School, although some people attending still act like it. But most students realize that now that HS is over, this place is optional and you have to pay for it, so you better get serious and come here to learn and make something of yourself. Because of the Campus' age, they are doing redevelopment , and recently constructed a new Student center building and administrative offices, where you get tested, enrolled and pay. For community colleges, there are only 2 criteria to enroll: you have to be 18 or have a High School diploma (or if currently in HS, get a form signed by your school). Because the State is so short of funds every year, it has affected the JC system, like all education, Classes have been trimmed back, and it isn't easy getting into the ones that you want or need, especially the more popular or required courses to move on to the State College or University system. This is sad, because the California Higher education model was the envy of the world when DVC was first built. Community colleges were inexpensive and a great stepping stone into CSU and UC systems, or provided great vocational training for the trades. Now, with the annual budget crisis and cuts, tuition is getting higher across the board and services are being cut. Here the cost is $45 per Unit. Still cheap, if you get your classes. Fortunately, they are offered night and day to accomodate the many working individuals who attend or have families. There is a large foreign student element here, mostly from Asia, and mostly Chinese, Korean and Japanese, where getting into Universities is fierce. A lot of Asian parents with money send their kids here because it is cheap (compared to CSU or UC) and also less demanding to enroll. So they see this as a gateway for their sons and daughters to get a US education, learn the language and culture, and hopefully get into the University system in California, which you need to maintain a C average and take the right courses to transfer. Getting into Berkeley or UCLA will still require excellent grades, and those that are accepted are almost always students with A average GPAs. DVC and the State loves Foreign students, because the fees per student are much higher, just like at the CSU and UC systems for foreign students. So higher revenue per student to combat the constant budget cuts from politicians to pay for Prison guard pensions. And there are several very large apartment complexes right across the street that act like dorms for these foreign students, and a brand new Safeway a block down the road, and Asian businesses nearby. For students with Disabilities, the DSS department assists there placement, and DSS students get first priority to classes. All students are required to test for English and Math, to see what levels they are at. For instance, there are at least 3 levels of English courses offered, with course numbers like 96/98 for remedial, 116/118 for high school level, and 122 for College level Freshman English. There are many ESL classes, too. For courses like 116 or 122, there are dozens of sessions offered, since they are the key to most students required study. There are a lot of disabled students that come here, and consequently the DSS staff is accommodating and can give good guidance, and appropriate accommodations, for physical, visual, or learning disabilities. DVC's school mascot is the Vikings, and the colors are purple and yellow. Their are large parking lots, but you need a permit, and peak times can be a traffic jam for ingress and egress. There is of course a library, cafeteria, and student union. And there are clubs and associations to join, and some sports. There is also a Theater and Theater arts. DVC has several Vocational program tracks. It has a Culinary program, and even a restaurant for testing and learning. IT also has a Dental Assistant program, and many others. Most JCs have these type of programs, but each campus may specialize in different curriculum. There are also a myriad of Certificate and Education programs, like Digital Arts and others. DVC and JCs in general are an excellent stepping stone into the CSU and UC systems, as the cost is comparatively low, the location is usually local, most classroom credits transfer easily if you take the recommended courses, and the admissions are much less restrictive. read more

I have to go with Tyler C, but I am also an older student (30s) returning to school to go to a different career field after getting laid off. I absolutely thrived here. DVC is one of the top five colleges in terms of transfer rates, and the professors here really care about their students. I got a really great education here: I loved the personalized attention that I got in class and having chem labs that were taught by the professors themselves, not TAs. Students are very helpful and friendly with each other, a great community feel. As other people have said, parking can be an issue and also getting into some of the more popular classes can be difficult. The new student center is nice, and even though I'll be gone by the time construction is done, it looks like the upgrades will be nice. I won't be here in the fall: I got into every school that I applied to and so I'll be transferring. Thanks, DVC! I am having a great time here at DVC. As an older adult who came back to finish their education, I really recommend it to others unsure if college is right for them. So if you find the right staff, you'll get truly helpful resources and sometimes even friendships. The DVC EOPS office and staff has been an amazing help to my own educational journey and has been a critical support- without them I don't think I would be graduating next semester. Aside from that, they have also upped their cafeteria/dining- I genuinely look forward to getting lunches now. Overall I am very happy of my decision to come here! read more

Their book store makes it easy to find what you're looking for, people are always willing to help you find your classes, there are multiple computer labs, the library is HUGE, the classes are worth paying the $20 for... Here is my experience thus far as someone who is presently enrolled at DVC and will continue to attend DVC. The reality? The majority of classes are challenging and not enjoyable. Some classes are pricey, and some teachers will ask you to purchase new textbooks because you need some access card to use the online textbook version...so say goodbye to saving money on textbooks. You'll likely find the easiest classes to be the ones you wind up loving, and you'll strive to enroll in more of those until you've exhausted all of the other classes in the same field. Let's talk about your "plan" that is provided to you when you begin at DVC while I'm on the subject of classes. You choose a major and a minor when you first enroll at DVC, and you must take the required classes in that discipline. I have a lot of psychology classes and other psychology-related topics because I major in psychology. I fail to see how music or sign language have any connection to what I'm studying. It feels like I'm taking more classes than I need to, which is exhausting. Let's talk about their fine assortment of teachers. NOT. Almost all teachers at DVC are rude, stuck up, entitled a-holes that have nothing better to do then to make everyone's life miserable. You want a understanding teacher that will give you leeway on your homework and projects? Nope. Almost all teachers at DVC will make your life a living hell and blame it on you. I'm a straight A student since I joined DVC in 2020 and last semester I got two F's because two teachers were just unbelievable when graduating, not helpful, and puts everything onto you to figure out for yourself. It's just tiring having to deal with all of the negatives and not really seeing many positives. Maybe my opinion will change of DVC as time goes on but so far, I just need a break. read more

I've taken English, psychology, art (intro sculpture), swimming, and trigonometry. The food the students make is pretty damn good. I like the breakfast sandwiches and for lunch, I usually get a couple of sides. I love the library. Late hours, just bring your laptop. Parking is a fucking nightmare. Classes fill up faster than a bowl a Halloween candy left outside with a sign that says take one each. Tips: Use ratemyprofessors to find out about a teacher. There are some not great teachers here. Study beforehand for the English/science/math tests. Not kidding. DOUBLE CHECK WHAT THE COUSELORS TELL YOU WHAT COURSES YOU NEED TO TRANSFER. I'VE HEARD SO MANY HORROR STORIES. read more

I never attended class here, but I would come here now and then with my high school symphonic/concert band for music festival/competitions. After our band was done performing, my friend and I decided to walk around campus. The campus wasn't too big, but it was a mosaic of different architectural styles and landscaping. We started in the main quad where the pond and the ducks were; the duckling were cute as f**k by the way. Then there were trails going up hill and there were narrow path ways. And there was a dessert looking area with palm trees and then a building where the wooden path to class was surrounded with jungle like foliage. We also saw another pond area with mini waterfalls and turtles. It was a ton of fun! We saw families and other people just walking around too. Since I never attended this campus as a college, I can't give it full five stars. However, sightseeing here was tons of fun! read more

We attended a dance performance in the Preforming Arts Center. It was presented by Encore, a local gym and dance studio. Everyone had to wait around in the lobby. It was a very big crowd and we all kind of just stacked up in there. We had tickets so there was assigned seating so if you don't have to get here early, don't. You can just come in before the performance and be seated. Unless you like standing in a cramped room of people. Its a big auditorium with great views of the stage. The seating and stage and all other aspects of the theater needs a little updating. Everything seemed old and rickety. Not to mention the sound quality was a bit off. I will say that the seats were very comfortable for how old they seemed. You know how sometimes in an old theater your back hurts or your legs fall asleep. Not this time. I had two small kids with me and there were moments of having to get up to go to the bathroom and its not that cramped that you don't feel uncomfortable walking in front other patrons. It was a great performance for all to enjoy. read more

I've enrolled my son at DVC's College for Kids for 4 years in a row now. I have never had an issue with the school until now. Prior to my experience here, I have always thought this school was much nicer than the community college that I went to. I was wrong. Please note that this one star reflection is due to a single professor who by extension represents faculty and staff and thus Diablo Valley College. My issue is with Fernando Gallo who is a Journalism teacher for the English Dept at DVC. One afternoon, I parked in lot 3 (since it is one of the designated lots for parents taking their kids to school) and walked with my son towards the library. While crossing the street, a 4-door grey colored Camry comes flying around the corner. I immediately look at the driver who legit...has his head turned and is looking behind him. So as he is speeding and rolling around the corner (doesn't slow down btw), his window is cracked about 4" & I say "slow down!" As soon as I touch the curb, I look back to see that he has parked in the STAFF/FACULTY parking space and he gets out of his car and says "What are you looking at?" I tell my son to hurry to class while I have words with this simpleton. I tell him, "I'm obviously looking at you flying around the corner, driving like that in the parking lot." He tells me to mind my own business. What a moron...seeing as you could have hit me and my kid walking across the street in a parking lot, don't you think this qualifies as MY business? So I say, "This IS my business, I'm making it MY business dumbass". Then he asks something completely irrelevant. "Do you even GO here?" Nice Fernando. Why would anyone hang out at a community college in the middle of the day? So I ask him "Do YOU even go here, driving like that in the lot?" He tells me "Yeah, I teach here" as if THAT excuses his terrible conduct. And I say "Ohhhh...you're a professor here. You're pretty smart to be talking like that, and driving that way in the parking lot." 1) ANYONE who behaves so crudely in public...much less at their place of employment has but a single lonely brain cell. 2) To throw around your title like it matters "I teach here", you're fooling yourself. 3) Fernando Gallo represents professors/faculty/staff here at DVC. The fact that he lacks basic respect for others in the vicinity is a scary thought and I will undoubtedly enroll my son elsewhere next summer. 4) He wasn't smart enough to realize he just gave away his identity, knowing that I can SEE where he has parked, thus coming to the conclusion that I could take his licence plate, figure out WHO he is and report him to the dean of his department (which I found to be the English dept). I'm glad you're teaching Journalism and not Criminal Justice. read more

The school only cares if you are teachable. They suck at helping students who they deem too "far behind" and will gladly stick you in a class you are under qualified for in order to take your money. This school is a giant money grab from the underqualified teachers who are too tired and over worked to care on top of the fact that valet parking is a bigger concern than struggling students. If you are smart go to this college otherwise if you actually need to learn how to learn effectively and need help being better in college stay away from this school at all costs. The tutors provided at the school are other students who are busy doing their own homework. Makes it difficult to get help when everyone is busy with their own lives. read more

With it's ridiculous tuition price fees...ESPECIALLY THE STUPIDITY OF THE PARKING AND ITS COST (MORE THAN THE CLASS!)...it's not worth the hassle to you and your bank account. If you decide to avoid this warning, please feel free to kick yourself when you get into the classroom and have to deal with the numerous high school attitudes and nuances...NOT FOR THE EDUCATED. Poor teachers, feel sorry for them. I recommend CCSF...soooo much more professional and taking the BART to any of their campuses is better than dealing with the idiotic hassle of the unnecessary parking fees of DVC (hey, their "Police Force" has to make a living for themselves somehow...self employment security...same as most I.T. professionals ;). CCSF feels like education, it's fresh and interesting and way more approachable plus it's always a nice outing into the city, lots of great placed to eat. This school has changed from the once stellar institution of yesteryear. First of all, the administration will completely ignore your requests for information if they decide they don't like you (how immature is that? Is that the example we want for our young people?). Overall Just dealing with anyone on staff is exhausting, defeating, and frankly depressing. This is not the place to go if you have a creative mind and/or you're an out of the box thinker. You will be treated poorly. Clearly their goal is to create robots/corporate cogs who only follow directions they are given and don't question anything. I have BIG concerns for the future knowing this place is in charge of educating our young adults. read more

Worst college experience ever. Weeks of calls to get 1 appt. with a lousy counselor. They told me my high school grades were useless now (I took all college prep when I graduated in 81') Frustrated I signed up for 1 night class . When I got there I was coughing and started getting ill with a fever (if you don't show for the 1st class you get charged and you get dropped). I dropped the class online 3 days later. I got a bill 6 months later . Explained and they refused to accept that I dropped saying "its a night class, you can't cancel because the whole course is only 6 weeks". Now I'm stuck with a letter threatening to attach my tax refunds and fine me 33 1/3 % penalty on top of the $138 originally billed. DVC you suck! read more

1 star for the constant semester long horrible parking and no good food places on campus or close to make up for it. Seriously, they need to get it together and start building multilevel parking garages or accept less students... yes, accept less students since you're a community college that should focus mostly on serving the people in the area not try to be a university. It's ridiculous how you can't even leave to get food without worrying about parking. I been to many community colleges and never had this problem, only at DVC. At other scbhools this is only a problem the first 3 weeks or so, but here it's always. Even when I went to take some classes at UC Berkeley I didn't have problems with parking. When people are stuck on campus with horrible food they are unhappy. Not everyone has the time to cook their own food and bring it or afford the expensive housing close by to go home and eat. I attended DVC for 2 semesters. I'd also attended UC Berkeley prior to that. Surprisingly, DVC's level of instruction was excellent - it wasn't all easy, scantron-only A's. In fact one of my profs was also a Berkeley prof. Though I graduated with a degree from Berkeley, much of the psych/cog-sci knowledge I retain now was from my DVC classes. And all my classes were small - the max was probably Psych 1, with about 75 people. All the profs were willing to meet up for office hours or just to hang out and answer random questions, and I'd say half of the reason why I loved my DVC experience was because of those profs. The campus feels like a high school on steroids, and you have a bunch of kids who act like it too - chainsmoking in the quad, cutting classes and breakdancing on cardboard squares. But there's plenty of other students who are serious about school too, and you definitely stand to gain from all the different people you meet: 40 year old returnees to school, international students, students who are busting their behinds with 20 hr work weeks and 20 units a semester and trying to get into a 4 year school. A different demographic as compared with Cal. To sum up: This was probably the biggest bang for my tuition buck of college. I learned a lot, and when I last checked, they had a 75% transfer to Cal admission rate. Definitely the best junior college in the Bay Area. Oh, and good facilities too: computer labs, media labs, and plenty of places to study, according to your desired ambient noise and foot traffic preferences. read more

Imagine this. You're a bright eyed 17 year old who has no idea what you will do with your future. The ONE counselor at your high school turns to you and says, "I don't have time for you." And with 250 students on her hands who can blame her? DVC picked up were my high school counselor gave up. After surviving high school, I took classes at DVC. At first I attended courses just because they sounded interesting. Then I learned that it was possible for an average student like me to transfer to a great University. Getting on the ball, I completed my General Education. Thanks to the wonderful teaching and counseling staff at DVC, I went from C average high school student to UC Berkeley Graduate. Reasons to go to DVC: *The teachers know the skills required to succeed in a State, Vocational school, or University. *With wide range of courses morning, noon, and night scheduling is flexible. There is no excuse. *DVC has the highest rate of transfer students into University of California, and the highest number of transfers into UC Berkeley. *They have excellent tutoring at the Learning Center. *They have a handy Math Center with tutors waiting for you morning, noon and night. *They have excellent programs for students with learning disabilities. *And it's fun and an encouraging environment. If I had to choose between DVC, CCC or LMC, it would be DVC all day! I have already graduated from here years ago but I still take classes here ever so often. The campus is big, airy, and well maintained. Why go to a University all 4 years for so much more money when you could do 2 years of community college and then transfer? Many professors work at other universities and teach here concurrently. I feel like I'm getting 2 for 1. Although parking lots are big, parking is always chaotic in the beginning of each semester so be prepared to arrive early! Teacher/ Class tips: - If you need to take P.E. for credits, take Shelly Pierson's classes. She is amazing! Her kick-boxing class is intense but liberating. - Gallin is cray cray, watch out if you take her for anthropology or social science classes! She is an extreme feminist... - Take women in history to fulfill your history requirements. It's so much more interesting. - if Speech class intimidates you, take the class in the Summer, trust me!!! - Utilize the counselors as much as you can, especially if you are a new student!!! They can refer you to many college resources and help you create a plan. Appointments with them fill up quickly so make your appointments early! read more

I came here yesterday for the first time in a long time to take my Mom school book shopping, get her ID card and parking permit. Yes My Mom! She is going to be attending this school for the culinary program this year...and I think its so great that a school that gave me a great education back in the early 90s is now giving my Mom an education and a dream come true for her. This school hasn't changed that much construction wise from what I could tell yesterday and in my opinion its not that beautiful of a school....but its functional and there is always someone to help you along the way. Everyone in the bookstore was friendly and on the contrary to other reviews here...the only people we encountered working in the bookstore did speak English. ;) A great choice in a school if you are planning to transfer to another college one day or want to do one of their programs. They also have great theater and dance departments that I got to be a part of. The school is far less expensive then other schools in the area and the perfect place for someone straight out of high school who doesn't know what the hell they want to do with their life without spending thousands of dollars at a university trying to figure it out. The reason why I choose DVC as a school to get my college transfer units instead of Solano (because I lived in Vallejo) is because of its known reputation to have great teachers and professors. When I graduated high school, I didn't know CRAP about the real world. I didn't even know what a college unit was or what it represented. Being that I am a product of the Vallejo Unified School District, getting the best education wasn't an option. I had to work with what I had, in order to graduate and that isn't saying much. At the end of my high school days, let's just say I learned little to nothing--kind of gives you the idea of what it means to be educated in the system of Vallejo. Even though I had no idea what college had to offer, DVC helped me through out all the questions I had for the real world. DVC helped me transfer to a 4-year with the resources they have. I highly recommend DVC to those who are in my situation from my past and look to continuing an education. read more

I'm a huge DVC fangirl. I'm a third year science major and the science department here is no joke. Most of the professors in the science field are very helpful and very challenging in a way that (I believe) truly benefits a student who wants to learn a lot. PS-110 especially has been such a great place for students to study together. DVC professors, in general, are very dedicated to helping their students learn the material well. I've loved all of my teachers here. Other than the science department, the rest of the campus is pretty nice too. It's not the prettiest campus but it's going through some renovations so it looks slightly better. Both the cafeteria and the SSC buliding are new and are a lot better than it used to be. However, prices for the food, whether it's from the book store or the cafeteria, are pretty expensive. Parking here is always horrendous during the first couple weeks of school but it gets better. Overall, DVC is not the best looking campus considering it is a community college. But it's a wonderful school in terms of learning. It has it's flaws but its making good improvements. read more
