Our car had a persistent squeak, and we took it into another mechanic to get it checked out. They…read more"tightened everything up but couldn't find the cause of the squeak". Three months later the squeak returned. Obviously we didn't bring the car back to the original mechanic, but took the car to Veryl's instead. The staff at Veryl's were extremely nice, fixed the problem (a ball joint), and took care of a tail light as well. They offered to give me a ride and pick me up while they fixed the car, and explained everything they would work on before they did it. Their estimate was spot on, and I didn't feel gross or taken advantage of like with other mechanics. The office is pleasant, with a very comfortable waiting room for short stays (cable TV, complimentary coffee, soft couches). And they're a 25 minute walk (or 5min ride) to the Common where you can go for a longer wait at Thirsty Mind Cafe where the wifi is free and the espresso drinks are well prepared. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about Veryl's, and from now on I won't be wasting my time with any other mechanics.

Gil's, a mom and pop auto shop, is run by Daniel and his staff. When I first visited for a routine oil change, I was seen and changed within an hour for an incredibly fair price. I wondered if they needed my filter in advance? Or my oil? Nope--they had those all ready. It was this kind of family and expertise that I wasn't used to for auto shops. So, when my tow driver knew Gil's and was ready to tow my broken down car to Gil's for a repair, I called them ahead of time to clear it. No problem, again. This was an incredible relief. The day I showed up to get my car back, I was excited. I was concerned about my battery needing a premiere level to get the same level of cold cranks--nope--they found a battery 2/3rds the price new and had the cold cranking power. I was concerned that there might be something wrong besides my battery--yep, they suspected the starter and had called me for approval in fixing it. All in all, I expected to spend a thousand in repair fees, but found them a surprising amount beneath my own estimate. Somehow, Gil's manages to do great repair at market level or below, and I believe that's because they rely on their car know-how and more affordable software systems. They were affected by the Cloudflare outage on Tues 18th, 2025, like most of the people in the world. They could still print out my receipt just fine, and I was on my way. Don't be put off by the struggles their customers go through. Their 3rd party's air pump worked if you had a card, the coin slot was jammed. I thought I saw a car with a transparent tarp out front one day, and it was gone the next. People must be coming and going here with all sorts of classic and new cars, and somehow Gil's manages to stay atop these changes. From what I know, they'll be moved out of this location soon, so keep an eye out for where they end up next.
